Yeah I'd definitely be interested in seeing more of this mate. During times like this, most churches are having to livestream or do prerecorded broadcasts online. So it would be good to get an idea through your constructive criticisms as to what to do and what not to do. Font was never something I thought too much about, so good to know.

Hey, Jake! John-Marc here, I’m the director of worship arts at Ahop Church, the second stream you reviewed. Jason shared a bit of what we do but not exactly how we get our audio to where it is. We do not run off the foh feed. We actually have a completely separate board in a studio recovering 32 channels from our stage box. From there I am sending everything into a Mac computer running protools and specifically Luke’s template which you promoted and I purchased...so thanks a ton!!! We have been experimenting and learning as we go but I will say that waves real time tune is far better for us than any other plugin for our vox. Can’t recommend this template or the plugins you recommend enough!!!! We do run our system slightly different than Luke does but only because I like an insurance policy. The soundcraft board acts as my back up should the protools session crash, which has happened. Not much but it can happen. We mix the template session first and then the best version we can off the board. That said, there is absolutely no comparison. Thanks again for all you have done to help churches like ours and just so you know, our pastor watched your feedback and immediately said, “let’s get the cameras we need.” Thanks again and blessings on all you do bro!!

I think this is helpful. Very few churches have "pros" to help them evaluate and make adjustments. Like one comment, I think having others on-screen with you might give some perspective or alternate ideas than what has worked for you in your situations. We all need constructive help, no matter where we serve :) Thank you, Jake, for thinking of us in making this sort of video.

Two big problems with churches getting into live streaming at this time. 1. Listing to way way too much bad information about how to go about it. I can't even say enough about the bad info. 2. Buying cameras that want perform well in average church lighting. Your lighting may look good to the human eye sitting inside of your church. Does not mean it will look good to a cheap/low budget camera with a small sensor. Tips on buying a camera, buy a video camera, you're doing video not stills. If you're going to use a fluid head (for pan/tilt) and or run cables long distance (over 20') buy SDI not HDMI output, it will be about $500. But you want need to buy adapters and other hardware. Buy one with at least 1 inch sensor or at least 1/2.84 inch. Examples with SDI output, Canon XA55 or XA15. Examples with HDMI output, Canon XA45 or XA11 there are other brands with similar specs. Less face it you could start streaming this Sunday with a smartphone and a KZread or Facebook account and wouldn't cost ya a dime. Pick out a couple of churches in your area that's doing a good job at streaming and go look at how they are doing it. Hopefully you can find one or two that's been doing it for several years. There's lots of good info in this video about lots of big mistake$$$. Good job Jake!

Man dude love this video! Also love seeing you do some stuff with my friends over at Austin Stone. I love those guys, and a couple of their leaders have poured into some over the years. I think it’s really cool to see God using this channel and the fruit that’s come from that. I remember when you had like 4K subs, and man you really were faithful to what God had given y’all with that. Think it’s cool how many people God has reached and even maybe recharged through this. Love it man! Keep dwelling in that land.

Second stream sounds great, volume is spot on and clarity and balance is great. I would probably use some different reverbs if possible (ie plates) as they sound a little bit better for streams in my opinion. Halls tend to get a bit boxy or washed out

These churches should look into investing in something like an optimod. (The PCIe version, optimod 1100, is like 1000 usd. Or when you want software only, StereoTool starts at 30 USD for just the multiband and limiting and BreakAway at 100 IIRC) Those are great as final processing. Especially when you arent doing a seperate stream audio mix. You don't have to pump them like radio stations do. But they still make everything balanced, loud and clear. As for the text on white background, a trick I learned in broadcasting is, put text on a white background. Then add shadow (photoshop) and make it a bit wide and just transparant enough that you can make out the text. Also make sure the shadow is 100% centered with the text, not a bit down or to the side. Use those settings during the video (or reference when you use other software live.) Because on normal conditions, you won't see the shadow almost at all but on bright condition, you can see the text easily.

Drum bleed in the 4th one is most likely due to off gain stage throughout the overall audio design. My church went though The exact same thing when starting to use a DAW for broadcast. I came on staff and found an overuse of compression to make quiet things loud and loud things quiet. There might be an overuse of compression on the 4th livestream.

At 12:40 you mention using a vocal tuning plugin. Is that some you just suggest for the mix that is going out to the livestream or could that be a common practice for the house mix to help tone challenged individuals? I know that it just made to correct slight variations and not notes that are completely out of the ball park, but just wondering.

Love the critique but fonts may be chosen for certain reasons (i.e. it's the overall church brand that the tech team have to stick to) and the team doesn't have control over that! I personally love Helvetica (Neue) and think it's a really great option for this!
