Being born in 1960, and raised Pentecostal, I “teethed’ on the red back. 😂 Love that you are playing through the hymnal. Nothing like the old hymns of the church. ♥️🙌🏻🙏🏻♥️

Although I’m a native Californian, I must be a southerner at heart. Something about these hymns resonates with me. So many evangelical churches have all but abandoned the hymnal in favor of what my brother calls 7-11 songs - sing a 7 word phrase and repeat it 11 times. I’m so glad I found your channel so I can get my hymn fix!

I want to say I thank you for your response. With COVID-19 I just don't get out very much. We just started church back for the Sunday AM service. If we manage to get the streaming part working real well, I will send you the link. I have played for church so long that I was lost for several months. Our church loves to sing and I always hold my breath so to speak when Robert throws it open for them to pick songs. It is nothing to have 30 minutes of just singing. Although I do read music some songs are far more difficult to play than others. Then there is always the problem where a song is in a key that is just way to high for the average person to sing. So I will move them to a lower key. My church thinks I am capable of doing anything, including our music director. His oldest son plays a trumpet and he is GREAT. We often do specials for the church and always for offertory. Yesterday we did "When The Roll Is Called Up Younder/When We All Get To Heaven". When my grandmother passed away I was given all her old song books. I have books with a print date of 1927 for the first printing. So many I have stored in baggies because they are so fragile. Most of the songs in those books I have in others but there are always a few that you wouldn't find anywhere so those I did copy and made a notebook and I use them from time to time. I will stop with this. So many of our younger generation are not familiar with "Shape Notes" so when Jason, the boy who plays the trumpet, saw this one song he told me there was something wrong with the notes. I'm so use to them that I don't think about when I go from a newer book to something that is 60 years old. I had to laugh and so I gave him the lesson on shape notes. He said they are difficult to follow. God bless you and just so you know, I too didn't have a lot of music lessons either. I worked all summer to earn $200.00 to buy an old upright piano. It was in fine shape till the movers dropped it when I was in the military. The sound board was cracked and thus it was trashed. I was 12 years old and worked one whole summer on my uncles farm working in the tobacco fields. Each week I took and made a payment. I think I managed to keep $50.00 for myself that whole summer. Just enough to buy a Dr. Pepper or a coke and a moon pie along. I drank a lot of water that summer.

I’ve ordered a Redback hymnal! Amazon said it will be here Friday. Can hardly wait! Have asked my son to take me piano shopping too! That hasn’t happened yet..., but I’m not going to give up! Natalie, I stumbled upon the Sunday Hymn episodes on KZread around week 5 or 6 and watch them over & over! What a wonderful blessing you & your family have been during this crazy time! As a child I memorized multiple verses of almost 200 hymns during a choir year to win a Baptist Hymnal with my name on it. I knew it was my only chance of ever having my very own hymnal, so I got busy! Each week, before or after choir, I had to find an adult choir worker to listen to me sing & they would keep track. The message of hymns have always been important to me as well. When one sings for others(or plays), you want to convey the feeling of the message to the listeners. You do that very well, in fact, I noticed it almost immediately! It’s OKAY that you don’t play a second instrument! Lol! Merry Walters Austin, TX

Rebecca I trust you will enjoy your new hymnal. I have had mine most likely since the original print way back when. I am 70 and still play for church. Yes, I read music but I also play by ear. I attend a Baptist church who call themselves Bapt-a-costals. Since I came from a Pentecostal back ground and my grandmother played for church well into her 90's I guess I'm following her footsteps. We still sing a huge number of the old songs but we sing some of the new ones. I took things a step further and reworked some of the old ones making them something new again. We have a music director who is just tops. Have Fun!

Wes How kind of you to reply! Sounds as though you have some talent and great fun playing at your church! I did not know what the Church Hymnal was until I began listening to Natalie! I am familiar with many of the gospels & know well, most hymns. I had a very short season of piano lessons, but had no piano at the time, so became discouraged quickly! By the time I got an old piano, I had lost interest. Really loved to sing more than play! Our church music was more high church, but I sometimes went to the Pentecostal church with a friend & listened to the Happy Goodman’s on the radio! I always thought there was room for both!😊 As I have aged, much to my dismay, I’ve lost my singing voice. Breaks my heart! I can still enjoy listening and have done lots of that during this Pandemic, thanks to KZread! I will be 70 this year.

Natalie, that right there is the heart and soul of what gospel music is all about. Not only do the words to these songs resonate in the heart of God's people, but your playing the tunes as intended drive the resounding words of the gospel deep into the soul! Praise God for your talented fingers on those keys!! (The fingers on your left hand especially resonate with me, as I've attempted to sing bass for the last....well let's say ever since I knew what a bass (shaped) note was!!) May God continue to richly bless you, your family, and music of the Church.

I have that book. I taught myself to play Holy, Holy, Holy Now I can hear how a song is played to help get it right. That lady sure loves to play. Looking for a City Here among the shadows living in a lonely land with strangers we’re a band of pilgrims on the move through dangers burdened down with sorrows and we’re shunned on every hand but we are looking for a city built above. Here in disappointment often we so sadly roam and earthly friends no longer speak one word of love but truly we have found contentment Jesus promised us a home so we are looking for a city built above In this land of dangers we are going here and there we are simply trusting in the blessed saviors’s love and mercy though we’ve may be strangers living in this world of care we’re always looking for a city built above Chorus Oh yes we’re looking for a city yonder where we’ll never never die no never And up there with all the saints yes with all the millions we will never say goodbye say goodbye no never yes and when we gather there we’ll meet Christ our Savior glory and we know we’ll meet friends and all our loved ones now we pray thee quickly come, pray thee quickly come O Spirit come o come on thee we call all our hopes renew

Natalie, it would be nice to have the time line stamped which you can now do in KZread in order to see each hymn with a description of the timeline. This would enable someone to quickly go back and pick a specific hymn that you have played for convenience. Thanks!

I wish I could play piano like this...... Im a classically trained organist, so its all sheet music, and very little improv for me.

Does your church in N.C. do a lot of hymns or is more like a lot of contemporary music from off the radio? My church sings mostly new contemporary music from off the radio and I am used to what I call a good ole fashion hymn sing, where we use the hymnal and I miss that so much.

Hi, I love your playing. And I'm going to ask a question that you probably have answered many times before. Could you please tell me the copyright date on the Church Hymnal you used on these videos. I want to pick up a copy and would like the same version you play from. Thanks for sharing the talent God has blessed you with. This side of heaven, you will probably never know how many people you have blessed.

I ordered a copy of the large print version, which arrived a couple of days ago, and am finding sight reading of the many songs I don't know to be an interesting challenge. The shape notes take some getting used to - I was tending to mistake the tonic for the leading note, because the bulk of the triangle is below the line. Also, it's not always obvious which part is carrying the melody. I've just been following through pages 1-25 while watching this video, which helps a lot - until you play bits of the tune differently from what's written! (I realise that also happens with other hymn books - they're often sung slightly differently from the printed score). Good fun, though. At least the tunes are usually good, even if some of the words are cringeworthy - not necessarily worse than many modern 'worship' songs, but tosh from a different era; the best hymns will outlast us all.

Natalie, any chance you are recording these as you play them and may be selling your recordings? MP3 or CD? We are without a pianist at this time and I REALLY love to sing these wonderful hymns in church. I'm the music minister of a small church in middle Georgia. Thanks
