    Thank you! I’m interested in all the differences I’ve seen in this form in different lineages. So far I feel like they all carry the same focus on power generation through rotation and stepping, and the differences are in individual movements. Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙏☯️

    I originally made these videos during COVID when everything was shut down so that my students had something to practice from, so I haven’t made any in a long time. The most useful way would be to show the applications (of which there are many) for each section. I’ll try!

    So glad it was helpful to you. That’s our job as Kung Fu brothers and sisters, to help each other out. I’m always struggling with things and trying to figure them out as well! The thing that helped me understand this form the most was that actually it is all about how to move in Wing Chun. It is it’s own animal. The fluid rotation and subtle rising and sinking with each step and movement are what makes it come together. Sometimes instead of worrying about each movement it’s easier to just try to flow through the whole form repeatedly, and refine it that way. In that way my other short video on doing the form at speed is maybe more useful to watch if you already know the sequence. Good luck in your training!☯️

    I found practicing forms facing (but not in contact with) Muk Yan Jong (wooden dummy) helped in many ways improve my practice & understanding of Wing Chun Form movements.

    Please help me!! Bong gerk exists in wing tshun techniques, but I don't see it anywhere in any form practice.

    If you watch the last kick in the Chum Kiu, it’s actually a Bong Gerk (to defend against a kick to the stomach, you see how it crosses the centreline, followed by a counter kick while your opponent is off balance, so there are two techniques happening in that one kick. Bong Gerk and Counter. Hope that makes sense to you!

    @@blackmambawingchun Thanks for the answer! Well, I've been researching this topic for a long time, because there are a lot of videos where the kick doesn't look like Bong gerk at all. . But okay. I watched Wong Shun Leung's video and finally actually saw Bong gerk!.

    At the "Return to center" After the start of the second section, your forearm is facing outward exposing the inner arm/wrist. Is there a reason for that? In Silat, knife awareness is important. Exposing your wrist there seems not knife-safe. Can you discuss that?

    That's an interesting question. All of the "return to centre" moves presuppose that having gone off centre the attacking energy has returned to the centre. There are countless movements in Wing Chun that utilize both the inside and outside of the arm. What dictates the one you're referring to is the spiral energy "snap" that you're supposed to get when changing from the uppercut to the interception (which is what the move you're referring to is). I can't speak to Silat since I have no knowledge of it unfortunately. Most of the hand techniques in Wing Chun that I can think of you would not use vs a blade though, we have a whole different way of moving for that which is expressed in the Baat Cham Dao. Not sure that answers your question, but I tried. All the best to you in your training, Devin

    Simon thanks so much for your kind words. Even after so many years practicing Wing Chun I still see myself as a beginner so glad my enthusiasm is helping others enjoy the art. I thought about doing a Biu Jee step by step. I really did these videos because during lockdown they were for my students stuck at home. If you have someone to work with you in the Biu Jee that’s much better than a video, because someone can watch and correct as you go along. I realized when I got back to in person that many of my students were copying what I was showing them in the videos but practicing them incorrectly without knowing it, and that can slow progress. All the best to you and your training though!☯️

    Which system are you learning? Leung Ting or Wong Shun Leung? My other question is that there is a punch from the bottom up, but why is there no side, hook punch in the form exercises? In principle, all kinds of strikes are included in the Wing Tschun system, but I don't understand why there is no hook strike???

    My lineage is Wang Kiu. There is something very similar to what I would call a shovel hook in the last striking section of the Biu Jee, before the Sam Bai Fat. It was originally apparently a Ginger Fist but was modified by Yip Man into a more practical shovel hook. At least that’s my understanding. More importantly though, the forms are designed to unlock principles, not so much specific techniques. The whole purpose of Chum Kiu is rotational power development and coordinating upper body movement s with stepping. Those two principles. You would never do a double Lan Sau the way it’s demonstrated in the form but if you just separate the arms, that’s the hook in wing chun, which is done using the whole body rotating at once. I’m busy packing and moving or I could tell a longer story, but I did make a video about what the forms were for. All the best in your training!

    Good morning. I will grant you it’s a strange technique. If you look at my Chum Kiu compared to Wong Shun Leung’s or Ip Man’s side by side you will see my double low Bong Sau is actually a little higher. I have never actually used a low Bong Sau in the ring or in any live application. The concept is that you’re defending an overwhelming low level force and you’re stepping and using this motion to deflect to the blindside. This makes sense in theory but in practice I’d rather drop my other arm and step using Gan Sau, it’s more effective for me in that scenario. If you’re looking for Bong Sau advice from me, don’t use it against a non Wing Chun opponent. It blocks vertical punches very well but fares very poorly vs boxing or mma style punches, you will get hit. All the best in your training!☯️

    It would be nice if you explained the purpose/function of each one of those techniques. Some of your movements seem to be useless, as far as combat is concerned.

    Ray I agree with you, the movements appear to have no combat applications on the surface. Actually the forms are foundational. I go fairly in depth into specific techniques in other videos, this one was meant for people who are literally just trying to remember the order of the movements, I didn’t want to over complicate it. All that being said, you really can’t learn Wing Chun from watching videos. I meant these to be a temporary help to people training on their own during the pandemic.

    @@blackmambawingchun Thank you. And yes, I am, and have been, interested in Wing Chun/JKD for many years. You might say, I've had a resurgence. It has been a good number of years that I had abandoned the practice---but I have, in this last year, decided to 'Re-acquaint' myself with these self-defense techniques.     It’s too bad there’s no school nearby, although some of them are not great anyway. If you’re interested in learning online, I’d encourage you to check out Adam Chan, he is more knowledgeable than me and offers online courses in Wing Chun (no affiliation with me). Finally though, if you don’t mind some advice, I wouldn’t get too hung up on styles if it’s self defence and not some cultural or historical interest you’re after. This is what’s important, in order: structure, movement, speed, power, timing. You can work on those using any number of techniques or styles. The most important thing is to find what actually works for you and what techniques play to your personal strengths. Then you need a heavy bag and someone to train and spar with. That’s my two cents after years of going down lots of different rabbit holes, hopefully it helps.

    @@blackmambawingchun I agree---the quality of some schools is questionable, to say the least! Adam Chan---Yes, I've watched a Number of his videos, as well as Dan Lok, and Master Wong. And again, you are correct; I've had 30-plus years of experience with various "Styles," including good ol' American boxing. But I really enjoy the fundamental principles of Wing Chun, and I seem to have a "Knack" for it. And yes, I know HOW to train---Not just punching and kicking, but 'Working' the 'Supportive,' and smaller muscle groups that inhance Speed, Power, and Flexibility---The "Stabalizer" muscles. Hey, I appreciate your input. I don't do this so much as to increase my fighting skills...I simply enjoy the all-around fitness of it; but I am able to Spar a bit here and there---it keeps your reflexes sharp! GOD bless.
