You need to measure the top at the same time you check the sides of your bar to verify your tailstock is inline vertically as well otherwise you could still turn taper.

If the in and out axis is parallel to the cutting tool, how does the vertical axis create a taper? Am I missing something?

That's one fine chuck you have. When setting the tailstock, depending on make, you have to slacken the locking lever as it also clamps the two parts of it together.

@@RaysGarage Your vid convinced me to nab the calibration bar and toolpost indicator. I always figured I was fine without them, but man, you sure made it look easy with them. Edge needs to give you a commission. ;) Thanks for the content! Keep on keepin on!

when you do with a pointed dial indictor does it not make it sensitive to center height differences?

I should have mentioned this and thanks for bringing this up! Yes the lathe must be level and the head trammed and cutting straight before you align the tailstock to the head.
