His hands are massive, makes the bass look like a small guitar
Love that his guitar tuner is his ears
A guy in 1985 talking about 1967 being a long time ago, and people in 2021 still listening to what he says, shows how much we respect his craft work!
Chuck is the best. No one comes up with lines like him. He can play anything.
Dude is so humble. Chuck Rainey is one of those honest, tasteful musicians with WAY more talent and skill than he even realizes. He's an artist up there with the greatest bassists, hands down!
J'ai décidé de jouer de la basse lorsque j'ai écouté Chuck Rainey dans '' Soulin' " de King Curtis. C'était au début des années 70.
There's just NO bass man like Chuck - no one. His playing is his own, and he's just plain wickedly good.
Incredibly awesome.... thanks for posting.
great bass player
This video is such a gem. Chuck Rainey playing his original Fender Precision, the one he used with Aretha, Leon Ware, Marvin Gaye, Minnie Riperton, Steely Dan. He sounded fat. The direct to board studio method improved his signature sound.
It was my great honor and privilege to play with Chuck in the texas-based Bigfoot Johnson band featuring the late Rusty Burns and John O'Daniel along with Buzzy Guerin and Jeff Williams. Chuck is not only the finest bass player I've ever had the privilege to know or work with but he is also one of the kindest most humble and gracious human beings you could ever know
Different Levels. Chuck is a humble Genius. 🎩👌🏿💯🚀
My all time favorite bassist

That tone is sooooo good!!!
This is enlightening into how he plays. Love his technique. He really utilizes his hands to get the tone he's looking for. Loves when he uses his palm to do those quick slap transitions
No electric bass player is harder to emulate than Chuck. It’s easier to sound like Jaco. Chuck has the greatest feel on bass. If you study his lines, he breaks a lot of “rules”, like voice leading, etc. He also sounds sloppy when his tracks are isolated, but masterful in the mix. It’s so perplexing. For example, listen to his bass line ISOLATED on Kid Charlemagne (it’s somewhere on youtube). Sounds goofy isolated but when it’s in the mix it’s a masterpiece. Chuck is the #1 electric bassist of all time. I’d love to meet him! And there is nothing special about his p-bass. His p-bass sounds no different than most. Chuck’s sound is exclusively his because of him, not his bass.

Did you watch the breakdown of Kid Charlemagne's guitar solo on Tim Pierce's channel, with Rick Beato? They have the multi-tracks and you get to hear isolated clips of different sections, including Rainey's ingenious. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKmk1smYhKvIoM4.html

I've known Chuck for many years. We did a few years of work together when we met, and we've remained friends for I think twenty-seven years, now. Your observations about his playing are very perceptive. Chuck can get ahead of you, and hear things in a track that you don't, and at least nine times out of ten he will play the perfect part in his first take. The irony of what you describe is that on the timeline, he is freakishly on-click. What I can tell you about his sound--and you're right that it doesn't matter what gear he's playing--is that he keeps his nails carefully maintained so that he has ever so slight nail contact. That was one of the first things I asked about, and you can hear from the way he describes anything that he's really thoughtful about it. And he moves from note to note in a way that puts a lot of nonpitched material into the overall sound, but it's all very much in time so it puts more skin and grease into the groove for lack of a better description. He really is one of the most delightful people you would ever want to know, and my wife and I both think the absolute world of him. Another dear friend introduced him to me, years ago, and I really never imagined it would be the kind of friendship it became. And for all the musical accomplishment, and frankly, the way I idolized him as a college kid years before I would encounter him, I hardly think of him that way. He is that high quality of a friend. I could go on at length, but I'll just leave it there. I hope that gives you some insight into him. Short version, what you see is what you get.

Yup. Just try the b section in rock steady
Damn such a great player and well spoken, he can do and teach .What a hero this guy is, hope your doing well Mr Rainey.
Thank you for posting this fascinating video.
So there I was, browsing on YT and there he was...right there, all this time. Initially drawn to our shared surname I am ashamed to say that until now I had never encountered this gentleman and his exquisite musical abilities. What is it that they say...better late than never. Wow! Demonstrably an unique talent with a skills-set that most contemporaries can only aspire to. A genius making time to share his techniques and know-how...once again...Wow! I am a true convert. Best wishes from Scotland. My son Greg Rainey is an aspiring musician, hear him sing on YT with 'Winnebago - Bikini State". Enjoy.
Bass god... Awesome Man... Nicest guy you'll ever meet....
Chuck is an amazing bass player. Thanks for the upload ;)
This man is such a humble soul. A remarkable career.
Great stuff! Chuck Rainey's the man
As an OG guitarist myself, who loves base also, I had worked with some of the same people that he had mentioned in this video, & I must say, I find his style and his personality more than impeccable. His math skills are 2nd to none, with the work he's done on Labelles Moon Shadow... big ups to this brother!!!
Its interesting how 'upright' Chuck's tone sounds to my ears; especially when he is soloing. #respect
Im Going To Be Tuned In One Day.
Incredible
And his tone is superbly gritty.
thank you up here
A bass virtuoso if there ever was one. Absolute genius level talent. And one hell of a nice guy by any and all accounts.
@11.54 the Man breaks loose!
What's that tune he's playing around the 15 minute mark, a ripping samba jazz fusion is always up my alley, can never know too many of those.

The original track is called 'Sol Fuego' by British Jazz-Funk band, Shakatak. This version is not them though, it's a cover - would love to know who by!
21:54 😂
Why do the people that post these never leave the date? Like it would be nice to know what year this was.
