Shaq wasn't the most consistent defender, but guys were more scared to go at him than some of the centers who were considered better defenders. He was an extremely intimidating presence.

Shaq was actually better at defense in his Orlando days cuz he was quicker and more lean. He put on more weight and got lazier when he got to the Lakers so his defense was worse. Shaq problem with defense has always been efforts and weight

That's actually impressive for Chuck despite being an undersized PF n not being known as a defender

Shaq may have gotten lazy at times during regular seasons and could not be bothered to guard pick and roll...but he was a top tier rim defender. Watch any of the 3peat finals games, he ran the paint on defense and guys rarely bothered to challenge him. He blocked 3+ shots and detterred dozens.Whether that's just "being big" or not, there's no charity in basketball and Shaq used all of his size to his advantage both ends of the court.

That's true. Shaq averaged 2.5-3 blocks in his prime. But he played with other centers that were averaging 3-4 blocks per game in Mutombo, Mourning, Robinson, and Olajuwon so he got overshadowed.

@Wynfall He was inconsistent at that end. There are literally games where would not give any effort on that end. Occasionally he’d have a 3 block game, but most of the time he was notoriously lazy on defense. And it got worse the heavier he became

The 90s had other all time great defensive Centers. Ewing, Hakeem, Robinson etc Shaq became a great defender later in his career on the Lakers

A lot of the top players diss Chuck for not playing on a championship team. They make themselves feel better for being with better teammates. Chuck has a league MVP and 2 Olympic gold medals. Get some new material.

I hate when people talk out of their ass not even checking stats... he had seasons where he averaged 3 blocks. You dont get that many blocks unless you are trying to block which means you gotta follow the action and get into positions. Thats definition of defense.

Funny thing about Shaq was that his career high in blocks was by far his rookie year. He also fouled out 8 times and recorded 5 fouls 23 additional times. I feel like Shaq's coaches probably told Shaq to lay off a bit on protecting the paint just so that he could stick around by the end of the game.

Ironically Chuck didn’t mention Hakeem, who’s the all-time leader in blocks.

The best shot blocker of all time was Wilt. They just didn't count them in stats. There were games where Wilt blocked over 20 shots.

It's pretty clear when you watch the old footage that although offense may have changed a lot since then, WIlt would still be far and away the best Shot blocker and rebounder today if he played exactly as he did back then.

Chuck's right. Shaq had the ability to block shots, but he wasn't a shot blocker. It wasn't central to his game, and to how other players played against him. It's like saying Magic Johnson was a 3-point shooter. Yes, he had the ability to make the shot, but it wasn't a central part of his game.
