Chuck added the double stops (which are reminiscent of Goree Carter from 1949) to the structure of the original lick and then added a souped up version of the classic T-Bone bend/slide to the 5 lick. Genius!

Cliff Gallup's intro on Gene Vincent's 'Crazy Legs' is closer to the Carl Hogan lick, which was released just over a year before Johnny B Goode. Gallup added the double stops. It's possible that Chuck never heard Crazy Legs, but it seems unlikely. And I'm sure he could have done it himself, but it's fascinating to see how these iconic players built on their influences.

And don't forget the big part of influence Chucks pianist J. Johnson had! :) Listen to the keys Chucks music are played in...... ;) I remember The Boss talked about when he and his band was stepping in as a backing band for Chuck at a live gig and when Chuck started playing the opening riff, Bruce and the band was thinking; what the he......! They quickly found out that they had to transpose their chords a halv tone up. :) :) Thank you Damian for your your magical moments and spreading life wisdom in companionship with great music! You're rocking!! :)

Berry was very open about his influences. He took all the signature licks of both T-Bone Walker and Elmore James. He was also heavily influenced by country music as well. Maybellene and and 30 days were influence by Berry's own admission by Bill Wills and his Texas Playboys. It's all good. As Berry himself said, "I took a little from here and from there and blended it all together. But nothing is new under the sun"

Very true. I also remember someone asking Chuck if Jimmy Reed was an influence and he heartily replied in the affirmative. Then again, Chuck liked a lot of different musicians such as Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Muddy Waters, Hoagy Carmichael, Charlie Christian, Jay McShann, as well as the people already mentioned.

Your comment about the intro, of course, being what grabbed you the most really takes me back to the first time I heard that song. I was 8,,9, or 10, or something like that. At the time Saturday Night Live was a hot, new, up and coming show. I was supposed to be in bed, but my parents were downstairs. So, I snuck into their room, popped on the telly, and snuck a peak. The host (Ruth Gordon) introduced this guy I'd never heard of named Chuck Berry. He started playing that riff. My head spun around. The next day, it was all I could think about. I've been thinking about it ever since.

Damian, so true. When I heard Chuck's intro, I thought, hmm? I know those licks.... In the early 60's when I heard the Beatles song, "Do you want to know a secret?" I played it finger style to get a feel, and I thought of Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons hit "Candy Girl". "hmm"? Maybe borrowed, maybe not but it shows how we all think of music creativity using what we understand of mood structure from our memory library. Maybe (probably) a poorly worded explanation by me. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing Damian, I am not sure if you know this, but Chuck Berry got the idea and melody for the song “Promised land” from country singer Roy Acuffs song “wabash cannonball”. A lot of rock n rollers were influenced by country artists. I’m sure you know Chuck was influenced by T-bone walker, and also junior Barnard heavily on the guitar. I am not sure if you are interested in making videos about music history or not, but I think it would be a good video to compare the two songs.

I used to use heavy picks for years and used different assortment of brands. But a friend of mine was the guitar tech for Joe Perry awhile back and he sent me a whole bunch of white .71mm Aerosmith picks and I loved them. So when I ran out I had some custom made for me that were just like the Aerosmith picks. Anyone who buys a DVD course from me gets one of my guitar picks in the package. :)

@@Damianblf Thank you for replying! I agree, Elvis was definitely complimentary to Crudup and gave him songwriting credit (though this songwriting credit honesty was not common in the industry). I'm referring to several articles that said Elvis should get credit for starting rockabilly with "My Baby Left Me" as he allegedly greatly increased the tempo from Crudup's original version. When I listen to them both, the tempi don't sound very different to my untrained ear. I love rockabilly but feel the contributions of African-Americans (and women like Wanda Jackson), are often overlooked. (Of course, I'm not referring to you at all and love your lessons, I just would like to see the media have a more inclusive history.) I'll step off my soapbox now. Thanks.

@@Damianblf interestingly enough I just recently spent the weekend with one of Arthur Crudups closest personal friends. Dick Waterman. Dick was a personal friend to a lot of the other Blues Legends from back then and was the guy that helped fight for many of them to get there royalties and money from concert promoters. He was the guy that road with Arthur Crudup and his family back in the early 70s to help Arthur get is past due royalties from the record label. Record label execs wouldn't turn over the money on some "technicalities". And Arthur sadly yet graciously accepted his fate as never going to receive his royalties, and tragically passed away not long after. But after Arthur passed they put the squeeze on record label again about a year later, and this time the label execs were willing to finally do the right thing (which they should have done many years earlier when he was still alive)... Arthur's Family received much more money than Arthur himself was originally even asking for, I think they received approx $250,000 in back royalties (Arthur was asking only for $60,000.... and keep in mind for context, back at that time 60,000 would have been more like 250,000. So the 250,000 his family actually got was more like equivalent to a Million dollars today). and that was only the first payment ....his family has continued to receive more money throughout the years. So Financial paybacks were eventually done, but unfortunately not during Arthur's lifetime. Just pointing this out because there is still a very popular belief throughout the years by many in our day & age that "no money was ever paid to the Crudup estate". Which are generally nothing more than assumptions. But are completely false.

  • @jayviviano109

@@Damianblf as for Elvis, your quote is correct. In fact Arthur himself had great respect for Elvis and felt Elvis was one of the few people out of the entire industry that ever gave him public acknowledgement. (There were other artists including RnB artist that also covered Arthur songs, but they never gave him a public shout out like Elvis did.) Plus Arthur said Elvis actually signed his royalty statements. So Elvis was under the assumption the record company was then sending Arthur the money. Arthur was quick to point out it wasn't Elvis's fault because he didn't know it was the greedy folks higher up running the record label that were keeping all of his royalty money. I'm actually working on a Documentary that will be covering a lot of this type of information. It's an interesting topic for sure, yet amazing almost alarming, all these years later how much misinformation is out there.

@@alangoldstein6767 I just saw your comment. What's interesting about your mention of My Baby Left Me is Arthur said he received a personal note from Elvis regarding that song...telling him how much he loved it. Arthur talked about this in interview in 1970s. (Most historians completely ignored it). As for the songs, Elvis changed them up quite a bit. Arthur also talked about this in another interview. Most folks aren't aware Elvis completely rewrote "That's Alright Mama". When people listen to Elvis's version and go back and listen to Arthur's, if they focus on the lyrics of each it's only then do they notice...different lyrics. Elvis did it himself. No one else was involved. (Some tried to falsely give Sam Phillips credit, but it's complete bs). Basically Elvis did what many other Blues Legends did back then... which was a long tradition of taking Popular lyrics from different blues songs and then writing/ rearranging them into ANOTHER song. Most Blues historians know this was a very common form of writing blues music back then. No one ever gave Elvis credit for essentially doing what many other Blues artists were doing. Arthur himself noted the changes in Elvis's version and pointed out he liked Elvis's spin on it. But of course no question Arthur was the initial inspiration to Elvis, behind his versions.
