Chrysler Newport MOPAR 383 6.2L V8 Acceleration SOUND

This amazing Chrysler Newport with 383 6.2L V8 Mopar Power runs 1/4 Mile drag racing. Hello and welcome to the Car Acceleration TV youtube channel. Chrysler's Newport powwerd by 383 Mopar big block engine and around 300HP. Chrysler's Newport, 300 and New Yorker models were technically and externally almost completely identical; they only differed from each other in terms of their engine and equipment level.
As standard, the Newport was equipped with the lowest-performing variant of the 6276 cm³ (383 cubic inch) eight-cylinder V-engine, which initially made 270 and last year 290 SAE hp. From 1966 a 325 SAE HP version of this engine was optionally available, in 1967 a 7.2 liter eight-cylinder engine (440 cubic inches) with an output of 375 SAE HP was available for all body versions with the exception of the station wagon.

I am a 440 guy but own both 383's and 440 cars. mpg....My 1968 300 with a 440 TNT was as quick as my then new 6.1 Hemi Challenger! 383 in a C body is like a 5.7 Challenger! I own and owned dozens of nice original B,C&E body Mopars..I restore them too. In a C body 1968 Chrysler(I had a 440 4bbl non high performance 68 300 and a 383 4bbl magnum in a 68 Newport(same car just trim difference) In stock form the 383 high performance aka magnum version was nearly as quick as the base 440 the single exhaust 440 4bbl 350'ish hp version..both had 3.23 gearing.. The 440 TNT(magnum) ate the 383 magnum version, but nonetheless the 383 kicked 400 plus cubic inch Fords easily and most big cube GM vehicles, and was nearly as quick as a single exhaust base 440 350 hp not the mighty 375 hp(420 hp actually they low balled the numbers at the factory like they all did then) They had the 383 2bbl,383 4bbl either single or duel exhaust or the 383 Magnum version(Chrysler&Plymouth was called another name).. I drove 383 & 440 cars as daily drivers in the 90's early 2000's and loved them...I have a 68 Charger RT 440&69 Charger 383 that was a 2bbl rebuilt to 383 Magnum specs and 26 mpg hwy! 16 average city/hwy mix..I had one with a gear venders overdrive and got 18.8 mpg average 28 hwy! So they also are quick and get good gas mileage..It ran 4.8 0-60 and 13.67 in the 1/4 with a stock 383 magnum 3.23 gears..Remember new cars have gearing equal to 5.19's in these old cars lol,so add 5.19's in it I will run low 12's! I still own several C bodies too..Some bone stock some rebuilt and wild!

I like these Chrysler Newports. For such a big car, they are not that heavy. A 650 to 750 RPM idle would sound so much better than 1,000 RPM. It sounds like it’s short shifting at about 4700 to 4800 RPM. Adjust the linkage to shift around 5200 RPM and you might pick up a 1/10 of a second or more off your time and get a higher trap speed.

Great time in a C body! for a small cam and very restrictive exhaust! Especially Coupled with a tight converter. It would smack alot of "performance cars!" I have owned 30+ mopar big blocks, from 1958 up. while I like how 383s run, and they are worlds better than a chevy 383, I sure wish I'd bought some more of those "smog" 400s I walked past 30 yrs ago! And some of those cheaper 9.0:1 pistons mopar had for 400s! They are MUCH better engines. I have ran 383s in C bodies (actually only ever raced C bodies) with 8bbl inline, various 4bbl, and long rams (the best) open headers, 4.56 gears and 3000 stall converters. Great top end, but nowhere near as fast as a 440 at the track. My 383 8bbl though posting more hp than a 440+6 in my dad's comparable C body was exactly 1 second slower in the 1/4 but at the exact same speed. It was all in first gear and every time we shifted he jumped ahead from higher rotating mass and then I'd start gaining but just not enough. He consistently did high gear burnouts. 383 2nd was tops. I had 4.56 gears, 6k rpm and he had 4.10 and 5500rpm The converter was looser but stalled the same. He had cc'd at 7.75:1 comp. and a 324deg x .552 lift cam and purely stock 906 heads I had 9.0:1, a 234 deg x .455 cam and port matched heads and intake, he had 1/4" of port shut off from misaligned bolts. That 440 lifted the front tires on a 1968 monaco. We dialed it to within .005 second took alot of trophies in bracket, it also made a "perfect" run. 400s have much better torque. I prefer the 361 and 400 over the 383. The 361 for cooling, and the 400 for cooling (longer water jackets) bottom end strength is many times better and more cubes. But it is TOTALY over looked for good pistons unless stroked so the 383 is cheaper to build. 383s don't make really good strokers, weaker bottoms (but still much tougher than brand x!) and 2" shorter water jackets. If you are interested in hot 383s look at the Desoto 350hp 8bbl versions. Although Still less power than a plain jane 440. (Their 361 was 345 8bbl and more if fuel injected) I had 2 1968 newports, 1 4dr one 2dr. And a 1970 with a 383 8bbl inline, and long rams, and loved it for road cruising and it would walk that 440+6 on the highway in the top end. The long rams broke the tires loose at 120mph, and lifted the front end. The 413 is my favorite for a great balance of hp and torque if you're stuck with factory head castings. Great work! Does it mud up the cooling system? All my 383s did horribly and needed flushed up to 2x a year, the heater cores 3-4 times. Never a problem on 400 and up motors. Great to see and good luck and God bless!
