Chrysler (Jeep/RAM/Dodge) P05091164AB Radio Repair | No Sound on AM/FM
Ғылым және технология
Repairing the P05091164AB radio unit from my Jeep Wrangler which lost sound on the AM/FM selections. This radio was used in multiple vehicle models manufactured by Chrysler. There are also a few different variants of this radio, all of which seem to be prone to this failure. The first repair attempt seen in the video only held for about a day, I re-flowed again at 600 degrees and it has been holding for weeks now.

Worked on my 2010 Dodge grand caravan. My am/fm and the cd player were not working for years, all I could do was play pandora from my cell phone thru the audio plug in port of the radio and then that finally went a few months ago. I did exactly what you did, step for step (had my phone playing video while I did it) and it worked like a charm! Thanks for passing along the info, from a fellow DIY'er.... *I did not have a small hot air gun BUT I do have a high heat gun (about the size of a blow dryer for your hair). I used aluminum foil rolled up like a cone and put on end of my heat gun so I could pin point the heat. It works great, hope it helps somebody else... thanks again

Thank you so much Jordan. Worked like a charm !! Dealership said it was antenna...$467. I knew it wasn't. Detailed instructions were spot on.

Thank you so much for this video. My am/fm was making noise, but nothing but static. Did exactly what you did, except I used a bernzomatic torch because I didn't have a heat gun, and the radio is working perfectly! Thank you again!

I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, same exact radio. I bought the tool, similar to the one you are using and IT WORKED!! And I can use the tool for other reflow projects on main boards on computers. A Decent tool like the one he uses is about $120. Thanks so much for sharing this video!

Just fixed the wife’s radio thanks for posting. I’d bought her a new Android style replacement and she didn’t like it. Most of These newer style Android style replacements don’t have volume knobs just touch sensitive volume controls. Also I couldn’t get the aftermarket Android radio to dim enough for night use. Tried everything… too bright whole inside of car lit up. So I fixed her old one and put it back in. She’s super happy. Thanks again.

This worked for me, I made a little heat shield out of tin foil to protect the other nearby components and only expose the pins of the chip. Found a cheap hot air station on Amazon and set it to about 450 degf for about 8-10 seconds on each side while holding pressure. Working great now, thanks!
Thank you so much for this! Been plagued with faulty radio sound for a while now and google searches have had me pulling speakers and my headliner and fuses and all sorts of odd things... Thought I would give this a shot. Didn't have a heat gun so I used a butane torch lighter and waved it along each side for a few seconds from a couple inches away while pressing down on the chip as you did... Worked like a charm!!! Now to put my headliner and speakers and fuses and dash back together... You Sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! Thanks again!

Thanks for the tip and the clear video! Mine didn't loose sound but stations would drift in/out, no lock on, just got noise on AM (no signal found), etc. Figured it was the same chip. One tip.... Be careful how much air flow is going out your hot air gun! I accidentally below 3 0402's off their pads (oh oh!). Fortunately your video quality was so good I was able to match the 3 parts up and soldered back in place. Works like a champ now!

This is a great video. Instead of using the hot air device in the video, I used my Weller P2K portable butane soldering iron. It also includes two hollow tips...a short one (approx 3/8") and a long one (approx 3/4"). Do NOT use the short one as it's a torch. The long one can be used on heatshrink and worked well for this repair...try melting some solder first to get used to it...it's a great device if you're thing about purchasing something to perform this repair.

I ended up cutting a 1/4" square of wood, and jammed it between the chip and the metal support just above it. Just that extra pressure keeps the connection, and the radio works. We'll see how long it lasts, though
@bonilla1221
3 ай бұрын
Did you wedge the wood between the black chip and the metal piece above it on the wall of the radio? I’m looking to do the same. Were the dimensions 1/4x1/4x 3/4 or something similar?
@jpmacoo
3 ай бұрын
@@bonilla1221 Yes, that's what I did. I read on another YT post where someone else put a plastic pen cap in there, and that worked for them. I figured that the wood wouldn't bend, and might last longer. It's been almost a year, so I can't remember the exact dimensions. Just try whatever fits, as long as it puts pressure on the chip, and keeps the connection. And, yes, it's still working
Thanks! Works great, if it doesn't work first time try again. Make sure gun is close and hot and hold for 6 seconds, press down pretty hard. 3rd time I did it it worked, figured the radio would have been trash anyways.
