    +Darth Blob I want to say thank you very much. It's always uplifting to hear back from viewers and what they take away from watching my videos. There's nothing I would like more than to see this channel take off like a rocket and help as many people as possible. I think I have hindered myself due to my type of videos. Mine are very specific and not general in anyway. That narrows down my audience to owners of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles or mechanics working on them. But.....on the other hand, I want it to be specific and about a certain vehicle. That way you get the exact info you want. Instead of a video on how brakes work.......I make videos on how to replace the front brakes on a 2007 Dodge Ram. That limits my viewership somewhat haha. I wouldn't have it any other way. The response I get from viewers such as yourself helps me stay inspired to make more videos. One day I hope it does take off, but for now I'm fine with where it is. A million and one thanks again to you and all the viewers.

    This is a fine video! Well, you surprised me to learn there is no dipstick so the Chrysler engineers and designers seem like they are well, just dipsticks. I understand they think the system is one in which it doesn't need checking like a permanently sealed one. But, if you ever have a little rough feel to the shifting in cold weather like I do, it would be good to know.

    @MotorCity Mechanic i have a 2017 9 speed, is this the same transmission? I've been going back and forth with dealer for over a year, sporadically downshifts so hard stuff flies off the seats or around in the trunk. No codes, resets haven't worked, star group said there is nothing they can do. Often happens mildly, tech says they can't reproduce. It apparently sat around for a year before I bought it, so I suggested they change the transmission oil, but they are saying sorry, sealed. 16K miles.

    Excellent video, I'm a huge fan of your channel. Question... Is there any way to determine the trans temp on a 2012 Avenger 3.6L without the scan tool? The display seems to have a little less info on the Avenger than the new 200.

  • @MotorCityMechanic

    @MotorCityMechanic

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Smitty417 Evening, I haven't looked thru the cluster info on the 2012 Avengers. If you wanting to know the trans temp inorder to check the fluid level.....here is what I do. You have what they call a 62TE transmission in your vehicle (6-speed). It requires a special fluid level checked (dipstick). When checking the 62TE level I have the engine running in park and with the special tool.....I'm wanting to see around 40 on the level indicator. That's a good overall level that wont cause any issues. Otherwise you will need to check the trans temp with a scanner.

  • @MotorCityMechanic

    @MotorCityMechanic

    8 жыл бұрын

    Smitty417 The procedure for adding fluid is the same as checking it....the fluid goes into the hole used to check the level. Getting it into that hole is the challenge. As far as the filter on a 9 speed......here is what the service info states: The 948TE/9HP48 automatic transmission is a sealed for life design and does not require periodic service. The only time the transmission fluid needs to be checked is when abnormal shifts frequently occur or evidence of a transmission fluid leak is present. So as you read.....there is no service. only checking fluid when you having an issue or if there is a leak. Thanks for the comment/question. This is for a 9 speed trans that came out in 2015....other wise before that they usually used a 62TE trans which is completely different.

    I have a 2018 Promaster city with the 2.4L 9 speed. My fault and stupidity, but battery acid leaked on to my transmission and my van would not start. I used a garden hose to wash off the acid and towed it to my dealership who said the acid had burnt through some connector pins causing electrical problems, but that also my transmission had water in it and showed me a picture from the drain plug (no dip stick). The van has never been near deep water and was otherwise was driving fine before the electrical issue so I am assuming I caused this with the garden hose. This was 7 days ago and the van has not been started since the hose incident. What are the chances water might have entered via a hose from the top and be visible from the drain plug so quickly? Any chance I can flush this water and not require a rebuild? Incidentally, I frequently would long idle my van while parked. It's never overheated, but what are the chances maybe that water entered from the radiator instead and the dealership missed it? Can this be proven conclusively?

    To do the transmission service on my 2007 Pacifica, the process seems similar but with the dipstick style tool. One big difference: I don't have a transmission temp readout on my instrument cluster. I'm considering taking the dive and buying a scan tool, but was unsure if just any scanner would read this output? As a cheaper option I considered just using a laser thermometer on the tranny pan to get a temperature, but was unsure if this was accurate enough since the manual specifically called out reading from a scan tool. Thoughts?

    Evening, the first step is checking the fluid level. The next would be making sure the software level is correct. We arent allowed by Chrysler to make many repairs on these vehicles. Which leads me to the next step.....valve body replacement and then if still issues.....trans replacement. I hope this info helps and thanks for the question. Make sure to subscribe

    It's normal behavior for shifting from 4 to 5 gears since that's done through a dog clutch which is basically a tooth gears clutch, you need the 2 gears to spin at the exactly same speed to have them engaging properly and this needs some time to equalize the speeds. There are no friction plates between these 2 gears to do a quick seamless shifting, everything is done through the software by reducing the engine speed (torque).

    I am reading some of the comments about the 9 speed transmission. In the military I had to deal with a general Electric transmission in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. it was a POS from the get go with so many modifications that ad to be done before the major issue of jumping into gear. The same holds true for the ZF 9 speed tranny.

    Hello David, Do you have any videos or info on checking automatic transmission fluid level on a 2013 Dodge Dart and any procedure instructions for changing the transmission fluid and filter? Thanks

  • @MotorCityMechanic

    @MotorCityMechanic

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Aaronize I don't have a specific video on the Dart but the procedure is pretty much the same as the 200 except how you access the plug to check the fluid. You remove the lower belly pan instead of going thru the wheel well. As far as the filter.....the filter does not get changed an a regular basis. To get to it you need to removed the transmission and separate the bell housing from the case. Basically not serviceable unless your overhauling the transmission. There is a bolt/drain on the bottom of the transmission that is removed to drain the fluid when performing a drain and refill. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe.

    @@RollsCanardly-fv9ks I believe you're right, although I did check it hot for some reason. My problem was that I couldn't find the place to check the fluid. At first I thought that you check the fluid at the same location (near the battery) where videos show people adding the tranny fluid. There's a place at the rear of the transmission which I could reach from the left side of the engine bay.

    When it comes to this transmission.....checking to see if the software is up today is very important. There are alot of software updates for different concerns. I would visit your local dealer and see if the updates need to be performed. Then go from there. This trans will always have certain traits that you will not be able to change so the issue my get helped by an update or remain the same. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

Back in the day you had 4 gears so you didn't notice as much with the trans.....now that there are 8 and 9 speeds.....there is always something going on. Its upshifting, downshifting, etc. They assume there is something wrong when most of the time......there isn't.

    The 9 speed is known for its shifts....sometimes hard....sometimes not. Its 9 speeds and its always doing something, like getting ready to upshift or downshift and its noticable. Any issues that would cause it to not shift or stay at 2000 would set a code. There are numerous software updates to help with the trans shifts or codes that might come up. But otherwise.....its known and normal to not have smooth shifts. Wish it wasnt that way but its the design and nothing that can be done. Its about the same for its bigger brother the 8 speed in the RWD vehicles. Its the dealership world that I have to work around.

    The 9 speed can have different shifts at times....some harder then normal. I have found that to pretty much be normal as you have heard already. Only thing I recommend is to see if there are any software updates. They are constantly making changes to the programming for different issues and you never know....there may be an update avail that may address some of the issues your having. Otherwise you can expect odd shifts or hard shifts sometimes. +Chris Nash Morning Chris. The trans is the same. The procedure for checking the fluid is the same. As far as service. Its a sealed for life transmission where the fluid only needs to be checked when you have trans shifting issues. That's directly from the service info. There is a drain plug on the bottom that you can use if and when you decide to ever change the fluid. I know they say sealed for life but I still believe a fluid change should be done at some point. That point is up to you. 60k miles to 100k miles is what I would recommend. The fluid is not cheap so keep that in mind. I guess we will see how these transmissions hold up in the long run. You won't get all of the fluid out when you drain it. Some remains in the torque converter and trans cooler, etc. I drained 3.4L of fluid. The best thing to do is replace the fluid with the amount you drained, check the level, drive the car, and if you want to further dilute the old fluid, repeat the process. You will never get 100% of the old fluid out.

    I just changed the trans fluid in my Avenger a couple days back. All went quite well and has been driving smoothly since without issues (i've put on about 200 miles since). Only concern is I only measured about 4.5 quarts that i took out taking into account some spillage and some fluid in the filter still. So I only put 4.5 back in. Ive read that normal trans fluid change is about 5.5 quarts. Having some trouble with the measurements because they fluctuate quite a bit even with the help of the scan tool. Basically what I'm wondering is if i didn't put enough fluid back in, how long will it take before I start noticing issues? Like I said i've put about 200 miles on, highway and city driving, and its been fine so I'm thinking everything is good. But will low fluid level be noticeable immediately or will that create problems over time? Thanks for your help.

  • @MotorCityMechanic

    8 жыл бұрын

    Afternoon Kimberly. The trans you have is a 62TE. To check the trans fluid 3 things are needed. First you need a special tool to measure the fluid level which you have to either purchase online or go to a shop that has one. Second thing is that you need to know what the temperature is of the fluid when checking. The temp and the level will be used along with a special chart (item #3) and then based on the readings....you will either need to add or remove trans fluid. I am currently working on a video series that explains all this.....might be a bit before its done. I wish it was very simple but its not. Some dealers are nice enough to check it for free while others want to charge. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe so that you get notified when that video series gets uploaded.

    Hey, I get it man, take your time... I'll keep watching. The gf's car is coming due (60k) for a change/filter so I'll be letting her take it to a pro. Her explorer was challenging enough, this Chrysler200 is off my charts in terms of ability, haha.

    Manufacturers don't want people to change or check their trans fluid at home. Too many people don't know how to check level or put in the wrong fluid then it becomes a warranty issue and/or a reputation problem. Most manufacturers don't recommend transmission service till 100,000 miles

    @@lard1892 Most have even gone to no interval for change. I hear in California a few places wont even let you work on your own car in your driveway beyond an oil change

    No need for a trans check unless you have a leak , right ? You know you have a leak if puddle on garage floor . Take your car to a GOOD mechanic , pay the price get er done ! Dip sticks are long gone , gone with shade tree mechanics . Forget about fix it yourself .

    I can tell you I won't be buying a Chrysler any time soon!

    I had no intention of buying a 200, due to a personal vow to avoid Chrysler products with automatic transmissions at any cost, but now the sadist in me almost wants to go test drive one to see what a nine-speed transmission with $45 / qt. fluid shifts like.

    +Dale Gribble I feel the more gears they add.....the more it shifts up and/or down and then the customer complains. I agree on the price of the fluid as well. But mine isn't to ask why, but to do or die lol

    is this applicable to the dodge journeys? i was told the only way to do a transmission flush is by dealer. there are no sticks or caps. a sealed system. The 200's and 300's and jeeps and durangos use the exact same 3.6 pentastar engine.

    youandiryan morning. The journey uses the 6 speed trans (62te) which has a dipstick tube with a twist off plastic cap. The 9 speed is currently only in the 200, Cherokee, Renegade, and the new 2017 Pacifica. Other vehicles have the same engine but use s different transmission. You have to look close to find the tube. I am working on a video to show how to check it without the special tool.
