A comprehensive breakdown of the Square JRPG, Chrono Trigger, its unusual mid-quel, Radical Dreamers on the SNES, as well as the Playstation classic, Chrono Cross. What made Trigger so compelling? How did it do time travel so well? And what happened to the anticipated sequel, rumored to be called Chrono Break?
Let's take a look, and perhaps we'll learn a few things about the Chrono trilogy and maybe enjoy a little nostalgia along the way.

While I fully realize that Trigger is widely hailed as the better game, Cross will always have a special place in my heart. The music in Cross was some of my favorite across JRPGs of that time.

+Toast Gaming It's an interesting beast in that most people who play Cross first love it through and through, but many who played Trigger beforehand have different expectations that aren't met with its sequel. It's not that Cross is a bad game at all, it's just not what a lot of us expected after what felt like an eternity (5 years) between the two games. We can agree though, Chrono Cross easily makes the top 5 list of all time in terms of game soundtracks in my book. Astounding.

I agree. Objectively I think Trigger is the better game, but Cross just hits the right notes for me personally. Especially after understanding the whole story and its connection to Trigger, which is not very apparent, I think the plot is fantastic and deep. It's the execution that leaves much to be desired but what the hell, I love the game regardless.

Man..from the Snes till the PS1/PS2 era, that was a golden era for Squaresoft. I was 17 at the time Chrono Trigger came out and I believe I spent 70 bucks at that time the game was released. Who would've know back then it would be one of the greatest games of all time. Would give anything to be able just to jump into my 17 year old self and relive those days when I brought this game. Great times...we need a proper sequel before it's too late!

Bjorick I disagree. While from a gameplay perspective I suppose it can be a bit of a pain having to reassign elements and characters after ‘switching bodies’ (especially considering the change of innate). But from a narrative standpoint, the idea of switching places with the antagonist was a really interesting plot development, and I personally felt was one of the more compelling aspects of the game’s story.

Now that Chrono Trigger has fully realized the popularity that it always deserved (I had it as a child in 1995), I think to _not_ make a third installation is criminal both from a business perspective and as a service to the fans. The internet was still blooming in 1999, and Trigger had not yet realized its legendary status yet, so Cross was overlooked for the booming Final Fantasy franchise. But now? People are a bit salty on FF, and they would be thirsty as hell for another great Chrono game. Break would sell like hotcakes.

  • @Indigo_Gaming

    @Indigo_Gaming

    6 жыл бұрын

I definitely think the time is ripe for a new entry to the series, but it would have to be done delicately. I think a mid-range budget game would work best as you'd have the freedom and creative flexibility of not having to sell 5 million copies, but you wouldn't be a dull beat-for-beat remake like the new Secret of Mana is shaping up to be. I think the I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear games have the right idea, but they just don't have the story/character inspiration to make them as great as they should be.

  • @VitneOfficial
    @VitneOfficial7 жыл бұрын

Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are my top 2 RPGs of all time. Together. I couldn't choose one over the other. What I think is really amazing about Cross is HOW it ties in with Trigger. A lot of people were upset it wasn't more direct, or as you said, they thought it wasn't as deep. I disagree with that. I think the story is great on it's own, but the vague way it ties into Trigger is eerie, giving you small glimpses into the "past" (Trigger), in the story, characters, and even the music at very specific times. It really got you thinking, wondering what in the world could have happened from Trigger that brought about Cross. I think it was the perfect sequel. That being said, I absolutely want more. In terms of Chrono Break, I think Square Enix knows we want it. They know the demand for it, and I still think it is possible. Look at what they are doing today: FF7 remake, FF12 remaster, Romancing SaGa 2 got an English release, and they are FINALLY bringing Romancing SaGa 3 out in English (that's pretty amazing). Maybe it'll never happen, but I think the chances are looking up now. Thank you for making this, I think anything that helps draw more attention to it gives Square more of a reason to consider it. I mean, they are still making new SaGa games, and those have always done far better in Japan than the west. A return to Chrono could be a serious win for them worldwide simply from the excitement that would surround it. And not a remake, the original game is perfect as is and stands the test of time wonderfully. A new game!

I love everything about Trigger, and although I had some misgivings with Cross's changes to the formula and loose conneciton to the story, there was a lot to love in that game too. Lush and mysterious environments, fantastic music (which borrows a lot of riffs and composition from Trigger) and some amazing setpieces. I agree that we were left hanging with that series but somehow other franchises continue to get treatment. I could never get into the SaGa franchise, my only entry being SaGa Frontier for the PSX. Maybe there were better games in the series, but it might just be more culturally popular in Japan, perhaps. Who knows?

  • @VitneOfficial

Indigo Gaming Yeah SaGa Frontier was really hard to get into I agree. But Romancing SaGa 3 was fantastic, even while playing it in Japanese (and not knowing any Japanese). Wonderful soundtrack and mechanics. It used the same engine as Final Fantasy 6. I can't wait for its English release!

But, wouldn't it make sense for a game about time travel (being it's main plot point) that it's sequel would follow suit? Also, they used a bit more "traditional" way of doing the fights that threw off some things. Now, CC is quite respected and no one has said it's terrible. Just that it's not the sequel people hoped for and honestly, it's such a jump from CT it's hard to not see why many CT fans weren't happy.

I am one of those people that thinks that Chrono Trigger is the best video game ever made, although I'm not a great fan of JRPGs as I've used to be. It still holds up, even more than 20 years after its release. Chrono Cross is a game that I think was completely misunderstood, and ended up being somewhat underrated. It's a kind of follow-up in name only, more like a "spiritual sequel" than a proper sequel. I personally feel that the focus shift from time to dimensional travel was very smart, despite a lot of complaints that were made for some other changes (lots of characters and a confused plot, which were, in a way, the opposite of what happened in Trigger, but it doesn't mean that it was something bad IMO, just different in this sense). Also, I think that Chrono Cross had the best soundtrack ever made for a video game. That being said... As much as I think that it would be interesting to see what Chrono Break could be, I also have my doubts. These games follow more or less the same standards set by Half-Life (in a comparision): they were so well done, so perfect, that another sequel(s) could ruin the legacy of the series, not living up to the unbelievable hype. They're unique for a (good) reason. Now I just hope that after the release of CT on Steam, Square Enix could do the same with CC. If basically all the FF games were (finally) released there, and even CT made its way, why not CC? Sorry for the LONG comment. Amazing video, BTW!

But damn, when I played Chrono Trigger, I loved it all the way. I still do, to see a game from 22 years ago as of this writing, still hold up in every way possible, it had to be a work of love. You can feel it, in every aspect of it. I will always remain hopeful for Chrono Break, if Nier got a sequel, Chrono Break needs and deserves it way more! Another game that holds chrono triggers masterpiece level of a game was secret of mana 2 and we never got it in America. Its no where as breath taking as chrono trigger. It was the first jrpg that had a 6 player selection for main characters only got 3. But the pick of the main character effected which 1 of 3 final bosses you got to fight across 6 storys. It was also the first to have a class evolution systems that effected what skillls and magic a character could learn.

Hey man, first off I have to say THANK YOU: This is one of the only gaming videos that I think deserves a comment I have ever seen in the years I have been on youtube. Masterfully done and commentaried. But - I"m not even the same person I was when I played this game. I'm not expecting good things, I'm going to live through a collapse of society and member good times I used to look forward to living through. "There is only war" - is all I can really see when I look at the future now. That twinkle in my eye died when I realized that taxation is the only hope humans have as fodder of "the great game" I was born into. I don't really think that there could be a good continuation to that series. When I played Chrono Cross I was like "What the HELL is this?!" - I didn't see a tie in at all, the mulit endings was about it. The world isn't the same, and hope for the future is a joke we all tell each other to keep moving forward. That hopeful air is GONE and I don't really see it coming back. Anyway - GREAT video! It brought back that twinkle for a second.

Welp -- "Chrono Trigger is fucking amazing" + "Chrono Cross is a great game, but a bad sequel" + "Chrono Break will probably never exist but us fans will always be waiting and hoping". Yes, this video was my confirmation bias of the day! But seriously, good stuff. Chrono Trigger is still my favorite video game of all time and probably always will be. Maybe someday we'll get some good CT-inspired indie games, though, like how Earthbound has stuff like Undertale and the upcoming, incredible-looking "Mother 4". I know I Am Setsuna was supposed to be inspired by CT but that seems tentative at best; at least attempts are being made, though.

I just think that it is crazy with the success and popularity that the first game had and how people can't stop talking about the game 20 years later that they haven't made a real sequel to the game. Where we get a new COD, FIFA and Madden every year, hell even something to do with Final Fantasy every year or 2 and yet this is neglected. It needs to come back!

It is really weird when that happens. It's usually money-oriented though. Cross got STELLAR reviews (it was one of GameSpot's very first 10/10's), but the sales were well out of proportion to its ratings. I think the game's loose series connections, odd timing and the overall JRPG fatigue of the time helped ruin its sales. There were just so many Japanese RPGs at the time that the novelty of something like Final Fantasy VII just wasn't there.

Nice video! Love these games. A minor pick at your script: you said the soundtrack was composed by such legends as Uematsu and Mitsuda. While true that Uematsu composed a chunk of songs, Mitsuda was lead and sole composer until he worked himself to sickness - he wasn't quite finished, so Uematsu stepped in to fill in the remaining tracks. Since Mitsuda both 1. composed the majority of the pieces, and 2. established the tonal style that Uematsu followed, it's best to make clear that Trigger's soundtrack is clearly Mitsuda's, with the assistance of Uematsu. All that said, I could see a case made for mentioning Uematsu first since he is clearly the more well-known composer. :) I just think I'd rather hear it the other way around. May Chrono Break rise again!!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed. I wasn't incorrect, they both worked on the soundtrack, and I did solely credit Mitsuda on Chrono Cross, but thanks for sharing that bit of info, that's an interesting anecdote I wasn't familiar with. I heard Kikuta was overworked and slept under his desk for months during the composition of Secret of Mana as well. Crazy how hardworking these guys were when crafting these masterful soundtracks.

I did not claim you were incorrect - I just made a point that it might have been better to first mention Mitsuda before Uematsu, since he deserves primary credit. Truly a stylistic, subjective nitpick on my part, for what I would call a good video! :) I hadn't heard about Kikuta & SoM - another strong soundtrack! I do know Mitsuda continued to have issues with working himself to death with games beyond Trigger. Definitely hard working... maybe too much?

+Kyle Bavender I can agree Mitsuda deserves more credit than Uematsu on this one, that sentence wasn't written in order of importance, more of just how it sounded. It seems like half of the classic Japanese devs worked themselves to the bone, and their effort shows! I can see why many are content on executive or less stressful positions now. Sakaguchi has been chilling in Hawaii making mobile games for years now. I honestly don't blame him. Sounds pretty sweet.

Chrono Trigger is in my opinion in the top 3 games I ever played, and I only just played through it in the past couple years as I was a touch too young to appreciate RPG's when it came out on SNES originally. So awesome a game from 1995 on a 16 bit system still holds so much depth and weight, truly a great experience. As mentioned in the vid, all elements of the game are top notch and will always hold a special place in gamers hearts!

Its really hard to find a game that for me even parallels chrono trigger. it will always be my favorite game and i am sure ill be 90 and still finding someway to play it. I Truly believe it to be a piece of art not just a game. I think that is the case for many people because like you said the story is so immersive and its so enjoyable to watch everything through out time. In most JRPG's we go in and do a quest and while it might effect the games current time line those experiences are all with in the same time frame, but with this game we get to travel back and forth in time and do something that will change the entire world. like planting the forest. Personally I think that is why Chrono Cross is in a different place and uses the dimension ideas instead, because in Trigger we saw the world from its birth to its end, so they couldn't just go back to that world seeing as we would of had to see and experience that in out travels already. Maybe thats been stated before but that is how i have always looked at it, i am curious what everyone thinks when it comes to that, like do you think that is why the game changed the mechanics from time travel to dimensions and the such? I was annoyed by cross though i felt while it is a great game it really didn't do much to tie the two together other than name sake and unless i missed something you just find out the fate of the team and that's really it. i was very disappointment in that. i have heard that they did make character models of crono and marle but you never see them. Id love to know why thats the case, or again if i missed something in my play through (it has been a few years since ive played cross tho so i might be forgetting something) Thanks for making this i really enjoyed it, and i learned something new about a franchise i love now i have to go out and find radical dreamers so i can add that experience. Now i am craving to play the games again and enjoy the story once again.

Chrono Trigger was the first JRPG I ever played. I wasn't interested in roleplaying games as a young teenager and also didn't have a Super Nintendo - but at the behest of a friend when we were in middle school (two years after Chrono Trigger released), I downloaded a ROM of the game and played it via emulator on my PC. I immediately fell in love with it, and it is what drove me to play other JRPGs and find that I really did enjoy the genre. Chrono Trigger remains my favorite game of all time - it was an unparalleled experience that I am incredibly thankful my friend introduced me to. I have similar and near equal love for Chrono Cross. As a teenager (I was about 16 when it came to the States), the plot of Cross was too complicated and convoluted for me to understand - but going back and replaying the game as an adult, I realized all of the nuances and references that were cleverly hidden in the game, and the way that the story actually unfolds in a more direct way than it seems at first glance. I'm really sad that we've not had another game in the franchise because I feel the previous two games really pushed the boundaries of storytelling in RPGs at the time of their creation. Also, while I absolutely adore Chrono Trigger's soundtrack - I think Chrono Cross's is the better, more masterful work. Trigger is great, but Cross is Mitsuda's magnum opus.

The game blew my mind and has haunted me since. I know it sounds like an exaggeration but imagine opening up a 10 year old’s mind to time travel and apocalyptic theology in such an engaging and memorable way. seemed like a bad faith interpretation of chrono cross, as someone who never got to play chrono trigger until roms when I got into PC building years after discovering (and loving) chrono cross. from that perspective, chrono cross never seemed like a true "sequel" as much as an interesting parallel story with a few carry overs, albeit I played them years apart and never got to replay chrono cross again after finishing chrono trigger. time to look into ps1 roms I guess? hands down my favorite game of the generation, imagine it has aged relatively well.

I remember playing Chrono Trigger for the first time back in high school in the DS. I was too young to played it back when it came out (and I never had it in SNES because my parents opted for a PlayStation after our NES) but after discovering it on the DS it quickly became one of my favorite games. Even after all these years it still manages to feel different from almost every other RPG. I I loved everything about it, especially the story and the battle system. I was really disappointed when I looked into Chrono Cross and discovered how it connected to Trigger. I think Crono Trigger really deserves an actual proper sequel. I recently bought I Am Setsuna on the Switch and it definitely takes a lot after Chrono Trigger. It's got a very similar game play style and even game design. it very much reminds me of back when I was playing Chrono Trigger for the first time.

I really disagree with your point about "tenuous connections to Chrono Trigger. The whole idea of why the alternate dimensions exist at all is based on the game interpreting the events of Chrono Trigger as having grander implications than merely rescuing the world. The rifts themselves aren't just tenuous links, they are supposed to be a consequence of youthful naivety. I don't particularly find myself impressed by this, I don't even like Chrono Cross... but I think it should be held accountable for the way it interprets Chrono Trigger, not merely saying it doesn't do anything. Because it does, the whole world is an extension of Chrono Trigger that resonates not just in audio motifs, but just basic concepts the game talks about throughout the duration of the game. It inherits the very themes of the planet Earth as a living entity, the struggle between human beings and technology. It's a very nostalgic game merely in the basis of the way it envisions the environment at its strongest, rather than something that isn't already being subjugated by humans. Regardless, I really enjoyed seeing you talk about these games in a way that I still feel doesn't misrepresent an experience of the series. It's one of the better videos covering the topic that I've seen, I commend you. Non sequitur, your voice sounds fine!

(STORY SPOILERS AHEAD) Thanks for your insightful (and civil) response. I always try to separate my own opinions from fact, and story analysis and critique are almost always just opinions rather than objective. My point on the separation of the two game's plots is that you could literally make a couple minor changes and the story of Cross is basically on its own legs. In my opinion, it seems the entire setting and cast of characters were developed before writing BACKWARDS to include plot ties to the original game. Serge's backstory, Lynx many "true" forms and motives, Kid's origins, all of that was retroactively written into the lore to make a connection to the events of Trigger. But honestly, they're really just lore and worldbuilding. Kid looks, acts or feels nothing like anything on Zeal or Schala, Lynx is more confusing than compelling as a character (considering you also play in his body for a third of the game). And there are tons of independent antagonists written into the lore, basically retconning everything that happened in Trigger, and making the entire journey that Crono, Marle, Lucca and the others went through seem like a waste of time. I think Cross would have had a stronger narrative had they not felt compelled to complicate every single location, character and story point with convoluted extrapolations to make it connect to another completely different setting. But those are just my thoughts on the story. Thanks for your take, and I appreciate the compliment on my video. It's good to have a wide swath of opinions out there so people can compare arguments and come up with their own conclusions.

One of the aspects of Chrono Cross that fascinated me in recent times, like I said a number of times elsewhere in YT, is how the game addresses and illustrates the real aftermath and consequences brought by the events of Chrono Trigger. (again possible spoilers below) When you think about it really, really deep enough, CC can make you question your thoughts (and perhaps change your views) about what you did in CT, in the sense that it sorta punishes the main protagonists of CT (and by extension, the players) for what they actually did, that perhaps they didn't really save the world and the future - simply dooming it and made things much worse, that all their time traveling wasn't exactly fun-filled action or whatnot, and that what they did isn't something heroic or to be glorified. (tldr: time-travel can be real bad :-P) Perhaps, CC had told us that Crono, Marle and Lucca weren't the heroes as they seemed to be, where it all boiled down to that scene in CT when the three first saw glimpse of Lavos, that they could've just turned around and let things be. While the message of CC is to challenge fate and reshape and steer one's destiny, it ironically also sends a message of "just stop, let it go, let it be, and let time flow on as it is - or try fixing it yourself to make it waayyyy worse" regarding the premise of CT. I concur that maybe, CC really got ambitious with its development cycle and storyline (as with what happened to Xenogears), that it had much potential to become a better and a more powerful title that would truly outshine CT. (I'll post my thoughts on the video on a separate comment much later.)

8:22: "If [Chrono Cross] would've been called something like 'Dimension Cross', with no allusion of a connection to Trigger, I would have far fewer qualms with it." How about calling it what it actually was: "Xenogears: Island Edition." The entire plot of CC from beginning to end is recycled from Xenogears. All sorts of incredibly specific details, from the intro level where your main character can pick up 200G in savings by rummaging around in their room, to the deeply psychological narrative, to the bizarre way in which the early-game main antagonist is both somehow the main character and the main character's father, to visiting the place where Save Points are manufactured and finding that they're not just a game mechanic, but an in-world means of social control by the bad guys, to the hero's enigmatic love interest turning out to be a reincarnation of a woman from ancient times, created specifically to help bring down an evil omnicidal god, and the reason the hero is special being because long ago, another version of himself came into contact with a mystical power source with a connection to said evil omnicidal god, to That One Level With The Awful Platforming Where You Keep Falling... you get the point. CC is a spiritual sequel to Xenogears far more than it is to Chrono Trigger. Between that and the way it treated what few connections it had to CT with such outright, naked contempt, you can easily understand why this game is almost universally loathed by CT fans. 8:30: "As many have said, Chrono Cross is a mediocre sequel, but a great game on its own merits." I wouldn't even say that. It wasn't even a particularly good game, because I had already played Xenogears and realized partway through my very first playthrough that they were ripping off its plot, and after that, the story became predictable. So, bad story. Then you have the characters, and wow were they ever awful! A massive cast for the sake of having a massive cast, almost none of which have any significance to the narrative at all. What about game mechanics? Their idea for the battle system had potential, but it was far too annoying and fiddly to produce much of anything other than frustration if you tried to do anything creative with it, so in the end it just devolves into yet another iteration of the "PCs lined up over here, monsters lined up over there" slog we've seen in JPRGs ever since the NES days. Chrono Trigger and Xenogears both gave us highly innovative and fun battle systems, while CC... didn't. What about the soundtrack, then? Honestly, it left almost zero impression on me. There are three things I remember clearly: 1) the intro was pretty cool, because of the way it remixed the intro from CT. 2) At some point, if you happened to have the guidebook or look up spoilers online, you can find your way into an otherwise completely missable storyline where there's a rock concert. 3) The final boss theme: THERE WASN'T ONE! (This is particularly insulting after CT gave us not one but two of the greatest final boss themes of all time!) Yes, they made a lame excuse to try to justify it with in-world lore, but... no. Just no. That's a lame excuse and nothing more. All in all, Chrono Cross is a pretty mediocre game on its own merits, and the way it crapped all over the legacy of a far better game only makes it worse.

And with how well people are receiving any news on the FF7 remake I don't think I want hear the whining that will erupt when they change it into an action game either.

I too felt the same way about Cross. Too many characters, too many plot lines, and none of them ever felt particularly strong. I felt the Trigger references were more for fans, but weren't necessary or relevant to the Cross story. It really could have been its own game title, with no connection to Trigger. But then again, so could many FF titles.

True. As a kid though, I didn't bother trying to recruit all the characters so the 'too many characters' was not an issue on my first playthrough. The plot lines are too many as well, but the main storyline is quite interesting I might say.

I still have the discs, maybe I'll take this approach to the game if I pop the discs in again. I bought the original strategy guide when it came out, and I guess my mentality at the time was I MUST DO IT ALL AT ONCE! Where Chrono Trigger, I had no guide, and I experimented with the scenarios and boss battles multiple times with different character, over multiple play through.

Cross was an ok game on it's own, but for my middle school mind, it was a great disappointment. This is because the fanfiction inside my own head is superior as a follow up to Cross. With Cross, I see many missed opportunities. The biggest of which, is Lavos. You see, the reason why my inner fanfiction is more satisfying is because I give Lavos an actual backstory and motivation. For was Lavos _truly_ evil? Resting peacefully within the planet for millions of years, doing what he can to forward human genetic and cultural progress? My head canon explores this premise. I found it particularly funny how your party goes running around using time gates that Lavos himself is producing, yet he acts as if that's not only allowable, but encouraged. There should be all kinds of butterfly effects that should be ruining your naive quest. The only explanation is that Lavos is cleaning up any time discrepancies. Then we have the Entity, and how it has a particular soft-spot for Lucca. Lucca, the one with the Fire Element (same as Lavos). Lucca, the one who just happens to know how to create time machines and gate keys despite being no more than a teenager. In my head cannon, she in particular becomes connected to Lavos, as I retcon him not as a villain, but as a benevolent alien entity of cosmic scale that's been misunderstood. Lucca (and a few others, including Schala) in particular has been genewhipped to be the culmination of his fostering of the human spirit. For the truth is, Lavos is only at their planet, because he's running from something. An entity that I ended up calling "Malevos" because it's like Lavos except, you know, actually evil (Malevolent Fire Big). It's like Lavos though it doesn't possess quite the same fire properties, or full control of time. Instead, it's more space oriented, and if Lavos is Fire, it's Element would be true darkness. It also goes about corrupting the wills of people (think Mass Effect Indoctrination), for it is through the corruption of will that a cosmic entity can show itself to be a truly evil, messed up God. All Lavos did was crash land on a reptite palace, defend himself against zeal when it got too greedy (when, for decades, and it benevolently TOLERATED being their battery), and of course, 1999, which my head canon addresses later. Thus, the entire quest of Chrono Trigger proves to be fabricated for our heroes through time gates that take them _precisely_ where and when they need to be to "stop" Lavos. It has all been nothing but an elaborate training program to prepare the CT team for an entity that's truly evil. You never, under any circumstance, actually "kill" the real Lavos (also, note that the real "Lavos" during the final fight isn't the big monster trying to kill you, but the harmless satellite creature that's content to be passive and watch, reviving the fake "boss" whenever you kill it, but never attacking you directly). Instead, he just takes the data and reruns it via New Game++ until you have been perfected (yes, even New Game ++ had a plot point inside my then middle schooler head, and the opening to my CT2 would depict our heroes being freakishly strong, until it gets knocked out of them for plot reasons). The thing is, Lavos is guarding something this new entity wants. It's always been Lavos' intent to pass this responsibility to you, his "Children of Time" as it would take a uniquely human spirit to counter the evil that will inevitably arrive in circa 2000~2500 to enslave, pervert, and corrupt all life. Lavos' decimation in 1999 A.D. is merely the Plan B. For I always wondered: "why would Lavos, who cultivated mankind, suddenly kill it off?" Maybe it's a mercy kill. So yes, even there ends up being a reason for Lavos arbitrarily arising in 1999 A.D. I would've revisited that scene from Lavos' point of view, as a *gut wrencher* for Lavos as he enacts a scorched earth policy. Better death for humanity than the enslavement that my new and truly demonic villain would impose. Thus, in my head canon, we'd stick with the same core cast of characters, as they grow older, and more cosmic. Some (like Marle) would become more supporting characters, and new characters from other planets would be introduced, but Lucca, Chrono, and Scala end up ascending to a final fight of time, space, will, and life against a entity of true malevolence, domination, and hatred, after getting lost in time and growing "old". With Lavos retconned as the Obi Wan of my head canon, even Lavos final true death at the hands of my new villain meant something, especially as it's mostly seen in that kawaii little satellite orb thing. Thus, I produced for myself, a more deep and meaningful sequel to Chrono Trigger for myself. Compared to this premise, Cross...really could have nothing I suppose.

Interesting head canon. Although there's a million and one ways you could go about it, I think the idea of following the logic of the original game and coming up with interesting twists and interpretations of those ideas is important. I compared it to Hideo Kojima games. And although those get batshit insane as the series go on, they still follow a sort of logic, and most of what happens IS connected to the main story. My beef with Cross was that 90% of the game isn't relevant to the story of Trigger. It's only later when it picks up a few of the pieces and complicates them upon them to a point of obtuseness. Could have been done better, in my opinion.

Exactly. They don't share anything in terms of themes. Worst still, I can't be attached the the cast at all, given how there are too many filler characters. Cross desperately wants to be its own game that has nothing to do with Trigger at all. And for that reason, it's not a proper sequel. Certainly not the follow up Trigger deserved.

TheHolyDarkness Well, Lavos "feeds" the planet, thanks to the frozen flame the humans are able to make more "energy" (technology, for example) and that energy goes to Lavos. Its like when you feed the turkey... But his death is ironic... thanks to the frozen flame the humans were capable to use magic. And without magic... you know the rest.

My biggest problems with Chrono Cross was that it lacked the feeling of nostalgia that a sequel is supposed to have, and that it was inconsistent with Chrono Trigger. Chrono cross made Crono, Lucca, and Marle out to all be little children, when in Chrono Trigger, they were all either young adults, or teenagers who were just starting to become adults. In their culture, the were clearly legally considered to be adults, as Crono was tried as an adult and sentenced to death. Running into them as little kids, no older then 10, always bugged the hell out of me. I still own that game, but I never play it. For me it's like one of those games, that the angry video Game nerd takes into his hidden dungeon and beats with a cat-of-nine-tails. They should never make another game to make it into a trilogy. Instead, they should recall Chrono Cross, and make a TRUE sequel to Chrono Trigger, without Serge, Kid, or Lynx; and with most, if not all of the original cast of characters, with Chrono still as the main hero... but Lucca as the main character this time. The plot for could still be the same as Chrono Cross. Basically, a piece of Lavos survives the final battle in Chrono Trigger and eventually grows to become the "Devourer of Time" or some other entity and intends to take revenge on Chono and his friends. But, here's the thing. Although you can fight Lavos ate what can be perceived at any time for you, in Chrono Trigger, there are really only two different times that They would have fought in the story. As there are only two eras in which you can fight him. One is when he first surfaces to destroy the world, which is in the the year 1999, which is 999 years after the present. The only other way to Fight lavos is from the bucket at the end of time, which likely takes place after Lavos destroyed the world, in the post apocalyptic future of the year 2300. Which would mean that Lavos would not be able to take revenge in his own Era, as all his enemies, would already be long dead. So to take revenge he would have to attack them in what he considers to be the past. So, Time travel would still be the main theme. They could have it that to take it's revenge, Lavos recruits the aid of several past villians, such as Yakra, Azala, Flea, Slash, and Ozzy, possibly Dalton or queen Zeal; and sends them to attack it's enemies and scatters then through out time. So, almost all the original heroes from the first game, Crono, Marle, Magus, and Frog are all misplaced in time. Robo is left alone, because it's just a robot with countless identical units of the same model as it, so how are you really going to find it? Lucca however, given how smart she is, anticipated the possibility of something coming through time to take revenge on her and her friends, so she was already prepared, but couldn't have expected it to happen the way it did, so, she alone was able to avoid it. She then has to travel across time and regather her friends, mostly, seeking to find Chrono, because he's her very best friend and was the leader of their group. Through out the game, she could regather almost all of the original heroes, from the first game, except for Robo, he remains a side character, because it decides that it's needed in the better future that it had been rebuilding, and Marle, Now actually called "Nadia" through out the whole game; because by this time, she and Chrono have a baby and one of them has to return to Guardia castle in their own time to look after it, though I suppose she could be a secret character who will join your team, if the right events are triggered, like Magus, who would still be looking for Schala. And, Frog could now be in his human form and be called "Glenn" through out the whole game and have a completely new list of techs. They could also introduce new members of the team as well, such as have Ayla as a side character as well and have here place on the team filled in by her and Kino's sin or daughter; and mabe add a few mystic members like a naga-ette, ore a lancer, possibly even add in a Reptite member. And, of course, the game would end with Lucca gathering the old heroes and some new ones, with Crono as the last one and facing off against the last of Lavos. it could be called "Chono Quest" or something to that effect.

Wow, wall of text. Great points here though. I think the vague tie-ins to Trigger COULD have been amazing. If they threw you into a new world but had familiar artifacts, ruins or other things you would run into every once in a while -- like peeks into the world of Trigger that time forgot. Maybe the ruins of Guardia castle, a rusty wreck of the Epoch, a broken down and condemned version of Lucca's lab or something... I think that would have been VERY interesting. They got so little of the feel, character and visuals of Trigger right though. Like you said, the characters as tiny kids (of which they wouldn't even have met eachother yet) wouldn't have known any of the stuff they were talking about (which people have said are just illusions I guess), the Chrono Trigger gang were teenagers, and were able to slay huge monsters and figure out riddles and complex machinery, so had to be physically adept and grown up. I mean no sequel is going to please all, but for me, Cross really wasn't the way to follow up the story of Trigger, and should have been its own universe.

Some of those exact "peeks" into the world of Trigger are actually in chrono cross!! You can visit Lucca's house, there is a broken down Epoch in Viper's manor! The first time I played Chrono Cross i missed all those things but if you play it again trying to find all secrets and try to make sense of the convoluted plot it is actually an amazing story and you start to see the a strong connection to trigger, although a sad one. I came into Chrono Trigger because an online friend of mine was a big fan of the game and he always recommended it. As it so happened my now brother-in-law had the PSX version which granted is not the better SNES version (I didn't even have a SNES anymore so it wouldn't matter anyway) and this pre-dates the DS version but I never knew the difference. I asked to borrow the game and he lent it to me along with his strategy guide and I played the hell out of it. I worked to achieve the 10 major endings and it took me many many tries to defeat Lavos, even after doing all the quests and everything but I did it and I still love it. Eventually I got my own copy of the PSX version (he might have given it to me as a gift even) and I still play it when I'm in the mood to go back and play it again. I did play Cross but I recall getting to a puzzle and I wasn't paying attention carefully and I recall reading that the solution is random and I wasn't getting much into it anyway so I never went back. I've never gone back to play it but I've tried to understand the lore to see if and how it connected back to Trigger.

I first discovered the Chrono series with a french video game critic named Hooper, he was a huge fan of the series at the time, the first video he made about this game was like in 2006~ and I was something like 10 years old, he explained that the game was only translated in english and, because I didn't speak a single word of english at the time, wasn't able to play this game. I had to wait until Square Enix released the game on Nintendo DS in 2009 to play it entierly translated in french, and after I first finished the game, I knew it was a masterpiece, I still remember pluging my headphones on my console in my bed at night just to listen the Schala's theme endlessly.

I'd really love to even get remasters/remakes of the games like many other Square titles have gotten over the years. I still remember being 7 and finally beating beating Lavos after multiple days because I just wasn't quite understanding his last form. My brother finally caved and gave me a few tips and I finally got to beat him. Then I played over and over again to get different endings. I wish I cared even half as much about Chrono Cross.
