Emily Henrys writing definitely evolved from Book Lovers to Happy Place. The writing in Happy Place is phenomenal, it's so gorgeous and you step right into the book with how beautifully descriptive it is. I haven't read Funny Story, but Happy Place has the best, most descriptive and really fun locations that allow for perfect scenes. I think this book has the most developed characters from any of her other books, as well as including queer and non white main characters! Its a really great summer vacation romance that has a large element of found family. All of the difference settings and activities that the characters were involved in were super fun! My copy is covered in annotations from all the times I have reread it since it came out!!
I am so obsessed with this deep dive. Emily henry books are insanely popular and YET I feel like there is no community! Or at least no depth to it, this scratched a deep itch in my brain that was dying to connect with someone over these books
25 minutes in and starting to wonder why I'm still watching.. Never once opened a YA book or heard of any of the people you were talking about.. but DAMN you got me invested in something I have absolutely no interest in! Scrolling down after half an hour of listening I genuinely expected this to have over 50k views and you to be a big youtuber I've just never seen before
I didn’t find this video. This video found me. And it’s quite literally the best thing I’ve ever watched
Happy Place was actually my first read and I LOVED IT- then devoured all her other reads!!

That's what is happening to me right now. Finished Happy Place 2 weeks ago and starting People we meet on vacation today. Obsessed with Emily Henry already.
I think this is so hilarious, I'm an Emily Henry lover but I have the exact opposite ranking to you, I haven't read funny story yet but book lovers is one of my favourite books of all time and I hated people we meet on vacation 😭😭 with that logic I probably won't like funny story but we'll see😭😭

You’re so underrated! I needed this video. I’ve never read Emily Henry but she is EVERYWHERE so I, thinking of checking her out 😂
I have never read an Emily Henry book & i have no idea how i ended up here but you are [word that means hilarious but like funnier than that] and I am so invested. 10 min in and I'm already sad knowing that this video will end. I sat up in bed to write this. It's that serious.
I’m going to assume that Midwest Gothic is a take on the literary genre Southern Gothic which is basically what Faulkner wrote. The term Gothic comes from the British or European genre from the 18th century which was where supernatural and dark themes are explored in the early novel. Southern Gothic took those themes and focused into a type of regionalism which was highly popular in early American literature. It’s not the same as the music genre or aesthetic.

i’m loving these takes on solving the midwest gothic lore thank you so much omg
This is iconic and I need more Content like this please and thank you!
Thank you for the breakdown! Loving the sweatshirts. But for some context, you may want to look up the definition for “gothic” in terms of literature. Might help to make the connection a bit since it’s likely a reference to the irony of common themes creating a specific atmosphere, one in which outsiders may view as dystopian or ripe with potential for darkness (like what is hinted at in Beach Read and Happy Place)

I have been recommended this video three times this week so I thought third time's the charm n I'm so glad I clicked. Subscribed! ❤
I randomly found this video AND I'M SO HAPPY. You're so funny girl!!!!
bro how do you only have 60 subscribers? you're literally hilarious
while watching this video I ran to go grab my copy of Beach Read. This will be my second Emily Henry book & I could not be more excited!! A stunner of a video, was giggling through the whole thing ♡
I needed this because for some reason the ONLY Emily Henry books I’ve read are her YA ones and so when she became super popular I was like ???
Subscribed! I will clear up this mentioning of Gothic for the Midwest: there's a very famous painting called American Gothic- look it up, you will have seen it before. It depicts two Midwest farmers from Iowa, and it predates the gothic subgenre/music scene. Only problem is whoever made that website was hoping people would remember the painting instead of the subgenre/music scene. By the way you are hilarious and I need more videos from you
@allymclanahan

THANK YOU!! i know of the painting but i didn’t think about it!! you are genius
I found this video at the perfect time!! I’ve only read Book Lovers, and it wasn’t my favorite, so I’m excited to see your recommendations
This was one of the best videos I've ever seen. The sunglasses every 2 seconds, perfect. I was laughing nonstop. Not to mention, I love Emily Henry, I will consume all of her adult novels I do not care. I loved this video so much I will forgive you putting my favorite book, Beach Read, at the bottom of the pyramid.
How is it possible you only have 466 subscribers ! This video is a masterpiece, you are soooooo funny !

I loved this video! 💐💗 I would love to see another analysis by another author! 💗
I absolutely love this video, few words to describe this video: hilarious, lovable and true. I read most of her books except funny story and her ya books ooop, but now imma change that.

finally finished the video and have to say that i'm hurt seeing that pyramid ... book lovers deserved better (beach read too, but i was late to the party bc after reading PWMOV first, i just didn't appreciate beach read enough that first time)
as a midwesterner i think we all feel a sense of camaraderie being the flyover states no one can distinguish
There are books and then there are Emily Henry books!! I feel like Funny Story is every critique Ive ever had from her previous books resolved. It’s like she said “I hear you about how annoying the family tropes are in Book Lovers oh and also my writing somehow got even better, enjoy!”
Cincinnatian here, the “Kentucky river region” is just Northern Kentucky (cities like Newport, Covington, Florence, etc.) they are just right across the Ohio River! Most people just lump them into the Cincinnati metro area.
Oof the book lovers disrespect hurt lol. But I also I loved this video and I agree with all of your other takes. I might love book lovers mainly for the sister relationship tbh lol.

this is very very niche, but i work in book marketing and develop media calendars (like birthdays, death anniversaries, world history events etc so that publishing folks can plan their campaigns): a lot of famous authors don't have their birthdays public for some reason? more than you'd think tbh idk if this happens in other industries as well, like well known but not public facing people don't have googlable birthdays
about to start Funny story! my top is #3 book lovers #2 happy place #1 beach read
