Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) | "My immune system killed my cancer." -Doug

Doug was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 1996. After years of treatments, he came to Penn Medicine where he received a new treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. After his treatment, Doug's team couldn't find one remaining leukemia cell. Not one.

My father passed away in 1997 after battling leukemia for 8 years. I don't remember the specific kind he had, but it was low white cells. During those 8 years he underwent chemotherapy. While the chemo may have extended his life, it ravaged his body. His immune system in particular. In the end it wasn't leukemia that killed him, it was the pneumonia he picked up in a hospital while undergoing tests. There was nothing left in his immune system to fight back with. I wish there were natural alternatives for him back in the day. I've never understood the login of battling a condition with toxins and radiation that was likely caused by toxins and radiation in the first place.

Feeling this too. Im at a crossroads literally trying to explain this toxicity is the thing thats really going to get to you. I'm currently having a difficult time explaining this. Being made to feel irresponsible for consider other avenues. It's a whole ordeal mentally physically and with friends. Conversations get hard. Literally feel a mirror to what your saying. But how to say. That's what are immune system is built for. Currently trying to calm people by showing cases of SR spontaneous remission.

I've had CLL for 14 yrs. I've done chemo 5 years ago but I didn't feel any better. Currently I'm feeling terrible and found out why. The cancer cells are winning again. I have infections that won't heal. I'm trying my first infusion in 5 days from now. I've never talked to anyone with CLL that has symptoms at all. I sweat constantly, especially at night, my bones hurt, I have a permanent UTI that requires an antibiotic daily, cold sores around my mouth and nose that won't go away with Valcor. I'm unbelievably sleepy. I do not understand why some people with CLL have symptoms and some don't. Either way I'm crossing my fingers that the infusions will at least alleviate the fatigue. I spent my 40s and half of my 50s either asleep or thinking about taking a nap. I'm not living a life, Im just existing.

1:29 I can feel the raw emotion of hope, sadness and relief. I just signed up for an immunotherapy study and they are doing all the tests right now for me to qualify. The cancer I'm dealing with is an Unknown Primary but they've found in the past few years that immunotherapy works on almost any cancer. I pray I can ultimately get the immunotherapy because the chemo is so draining. Gosh, I cannot imagine 10 years on chemo. I've been on it for about a year and a half and it's difficult. 1:40 This was 2010? That's 13 years ago. Why isn't immunotherapy more prominent?

Appreciate you sharing your story Doug. I would like to know time frame for how long it has been now. Also, for those who are watching who have never heard of T Cell Therapy, there is quite a bit that is not disclosed here (partly for the sake of time I'm sure), but the risks of CRS among other neurotoxicities are very high. My wife was in the ICU for 6 days and hospital for 2.5 weeks after her first infusion with T Cells. She's had two now in the past year, and has recently relapsed. You also have to get IVIG infusions regularly in order to help your immune system. Please do your research before considering this treatment. And look at who stands to gain from the research, studies, and testimonies.

As of April 2024, CAR T-cell therapy in the United States can cost between $300,000 and $600,000, but some estimates say the true cost can be over $1 million. This cost doesn't include hospital fees or drugs to treat side effects.

This is a revolutionary progress in curing cancer. I just got to know that there is a method to force leukemia cells to mature into harmless immune cells known as macrophages. This is a possible life changing treatment. Why isn't this pushed this treatment to other types of cancers. Why isn't this even popular yet....

I was diagnosed 2 years ago. I don’t want any treatment. If it’s my time to go I’m gonna go and not fight fate. Maybe there’s something better waiting on the other side of death, and I’ll welcome it.

Hello Victoria, so good to read your comment. I suspect i have leukimia because i have the symtoms. I am going to the hospital in september. But i also don't want treatment for the same reason as you. If it's my time, it's my time. But i think this way of thinking is un common and i am afraid for the doctor's reaction and my family's reaction.

Such ignorance! Only the most aggressive forms of CLL - which are relatively rare require bone marrow transplants. Most versions of CLL are now highly treatable with the new BTK and BCL-2 inhibitor drugs that are NOT chemo. People are getting long term remissions and 15 to 20 years of extra life. To trade that for a fairy tale is REALLY dumb!Only the most aggressive forms of CLL - which are relatively rare require bone marrow transplants.

Ive had cancer since 95 (ALL) to be exact. I've been using marijuana for the past 17 years n imma say I'm cancer free n healthier than ever. So yea I went threw chemo n bone marrow transplants n spinal taps. But to this day I'm cancer free n I contribute it to marijuana. Gods gift to the earth shall I say no more.

@Tricklzworth I just was told I have CLL in October I haven't been told anything about what exactly is the type, genes or missing DNA or chromosome deletions and such but was told my wbc is currently a little above 68 and having a pet scan on the 14th at UC Davis, CA to see if there are any enlarged lymph nodes, spleen, or liver enlargement.....what form of marijuana did you use and how much...I'm currently taking a 5 mg gummy for sleep...I quit smoking it at beginning of October cause I was hospitalized with acute raspatory failure with hypoxia from the c vid, thought I should give my lungs a break...thats when they told me I had CLL....and did you eat anything that helped you? Please and Thank you

Doug sounds really authentic, but this had no usable substance to it other than an advertisement for Penn Medicine. Having CLL for the past 9 years I find the internet and cancer treatment facilities deceptive and a person is really on their own. At least this is my truth. Anyway, congrats to you Doug
