Christopher Walken Inked Caricature Demo

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A time lapse how-to demo drawing Christopher Walken's caricature using ink, brush and dip pens with traditional style crosshatching. In this video I share strategies on how to create a fine art quality ink portrait. And I discuss when it's best to use a particular type of pen or brush to achieve a certain effect. My sketchy inking technique is inspired by Golden Age illustrators like Joseph Clement Coll, James Montgomery Flagg, Heinrich Kley and others.

Awesome, Court! Almost like the Mort Drucker kind of movie spoofs in the MAD mags. Hope this isn't a dying art - so much of digital work overs these days, that it's refreshing to see pen and ink works.

A lot of information for a short video! But I would like to know more about your process... Did you use 0.5 mechanical pencil with 2B for the pencils strokes? Is it necessary to erase the pencil after the inking? And could you tell us your opinion about fontain pens? Thank you for one more great lesson!

Thanks Br 273k. I think I used an HB Staedtler pencil for the line drawing. And yes, for a cleaner scan of the inked image it's important to erase the original pencil lines after it's inked. As far as fountain pens, I'm sure there are some good ones. But I've never found any. Whenever I try them, they give really thin lines with little variation or they skip and don't have consistent ink flow. But I've probably just never found a high quality fountain pen. Those can be very expensive.

@@CourtJones When I erase the pencil, I got some fading in my ink - maybe it's because of graphite in excess, the graduation of pencil (3 to 8b), or few time of ink drying - 5 or 10 minutes. So I am using 90g tracing paper, the result is usefull only for PC scan, but in advantage I preserve the original sketch for a another try (frequently necessary... I'm just a hobbist). Before your video I never thougth of planning the hatches with pencil lines, so my hatches looked like a bunch of straw in aleatory directions. I also had the stupid idea that I should do all the work with the same tool, an unique brush or dip pen, so this video really opened my mind! I think it would be great if you make a video explaning the inking methods and styles of the old masters of the ilustration - it would be a great tribute too. Thank you very much!

@@br273k it sounds like you may have erased your pencil lines too soon, before the ink has fully dried. Ink laid down with a metal nib is a thicker application than with brush. So nib ink drawings take much longer to dry than if you applied the ink with a brush. I would wait a couple hours after finishing the ink at least before trying to erase. Also, it sounds like you used a VERY soft pencil for some of the lines. An 8B pencil smudges very easily. I would never use anything softer than an HB pencil to draw the lines for an inking. And always use a light touch with the pencil so that the lines are easier to erase. And of course my eraser of choice is a kneaded eraser.
