    The stages here are fascinated. 5 minutes of repetitive French. Then 30 seconds of what I can only assume is abridged French. Then a 20 second whisper in Nolan's ear. Followed by the same 5 minutes of repetitive French that I only just now is her translating his English because I looked at the video. Which means that what I thought was a second French translator for the purpose of brevity is actually the one asking questions. Like a Nolan film in itself.

    Can someone please tell me how that insane translation works? Does she have a plug near her ear where what he just said is being repeated so she can do a simultaneous translation of it once he finishes? If she was doing all the consecutive parts from memory, I don't know what to say, that's mind-blowing. Does somebody know her name? Simultaneous translation in itself is already incredibly demanding to your brain on its own, normally they would change out translators after 20-30 minutes for that reason. There was an incident in the past where a translator just collapsed after 75 minutes of translating a UN speech of Khadafy and someone had to take over for the final 20 minutes. Hats off to that lady, and she looks so happy and relaxed while performing such a big task for 90 minutes without a break. She saved an otherwise quite inapt interview situation.

    I understand that the French are incapable of understanding there are languages out there other than their own, but the pretentiousness of a guy who knows English and goes out of his way to address an American in French here is pretty rude and pathetic. Like, get over yourselves, he’s the most important person in that room.

  • @alexman378

    @alexman378

    Alexander L I’m actually tri lingual (Greek, Spanish and English), and from Greece, English isn’t my first or even second language. When you have an international platform and invite an American filmmaker, you go with the standard form of communication. That’s not just something I’ve noticed here, not even the staff in Paris’ airport speaks any English, and I’ve almost lost a flight because I couldn’t find one person to translate. That’s why I said that the French are incapable of acknowledging that there are other languages out there. It’s not an “American” thing, the standard common language for everyone to understand is English. Would I rather it be Greek so it could suit me and people like me better? Sure, but it’s not that way and one is going out of their way to avoid doing that with a guest is just annoying.

    Because he was at the mercy of what the interviewer asked him and the direction he wanted to go with his questions. Must of his questions were directed towards to pure filmmaking while shooting a film, the interviewer wasn't very interested on more abstract areas like writing, even so Nolan addresses that areas in a couple of questions. There are a lot intwerview videos of him on youtube in which he talks about his creative process and directing approach.
