...and these earliest religions were theocratic states based on control of cyclical cosmic knowledge which was used to know when to do things like plant crops and harvest. The rise of heroic and legendary warrior figures (Which lead to monarchies with theocratic support, i.e., divine right of rulers) followed later when defense of their agricultural territory generated large scale warfare. The first wars were wars between agriculturalists, and agriculturist wars against nomads and pastoralists. They were also wars between the theologies (or gods) of these disperate peoples.

Yes, but to deny that religions still fulfill a purpose is absurd. At the very least, religions define communities, they give people something to belong to. If you are born into a community with a certain church that is dominant, you don't want to be outside of it, all people want to be in with the in crowd. We might be able to achieve community in different ways, but religion has the most powerful tools, such as how it can solve ones uncertainty about how to behave and what to expect. If you can belong to a church that assures you that everything will be all right when you die, or a community group with ping pong, the choice is easy, even though the church is lying. I have been a lifelong atheist and it had been often very lonely. Others move to a new town and join a church, and instantly have people around them. I have no one. I have often wished I could believe, because delusion seems better than loneliness.

@@itsROMPERS... we have community, tradition, and social cohesion without religion. The strongest tool of religions for a community or culture is HATE. It amplifies human ethnocentric behaviors with a cultural 'us vs them' mentality. It's second strongest effect is one which bolsters internal authoritarian control of said culture. The Enlightenment, Humanism, Scientific epistemology, Secular humanism, and cultural tolerance have all developed IN SPITE of religions.

and replace it with what? In places where this is happening, they replace it with the cult of celebrity which suggests the idea that the human brain is primitive enough to require something outside of yourself to believe in, to keep you going. So then the response becomes, we need to replace it with something better, something less harmful, something that helps us do better rather than hindering it and no faction has a conclusive answer that everyone can make work yet.

@@itsROMPERS... The flip side of that is that if you wish to continue to be a member of that community, you are required to conform to its dogma (bc it's a religious group). The sense of belonging comes with a price that's too heavy for some. Whilst there is extreme love and affection for those who accept and enforce the religious values and norms, there is also the extreme prejudice toward those who stand against it or even toward those who want to change some tenets even as they agree with the overarching ideology.

I was 15 (65) when I read of Peter 'supposedly' having the faith to walk on water. Then John 14:12-14 "whoever believes in me..." I knew there was something wrong with this book, and it was that very book that was showing me, there was something wrong with this book, the Christian bible. It took a while, but I woke up and realized, I was being deceived. The fear element, the creators inserted didn't work with me. 'Believe or ELSE!' Religion takes away one's quality of life with fear being the worst. Rules, traditions, silly dogma, control... ALWAYS a Christian informing you what you should/should not do, according to their religious sect/cult. The definition of 'Evil' should have religion behind it somewhere.

How can you have good and evil without God? Are we 'just another life form'? If so, then, logically, people do not deserve any special moral privilege. Therefore, how absurd is it for Hitch to call religion 'evil'! Moreover, it is not true that the Bible teaches, "Believe - or else!" In fact, if you are a good person, you have nothing to worry about. Yet, do you agree that God should judge evil people? For example, have you ever lied or stolen? If so, do you think God should judge a lying thief? Christ died on a Cross so that you may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

If you think on your own and not have blind faith in the bible, without reason you are hell bound. The very first story in bible tells you its gods way or damnation. The flood story is solely about believe and follow or die. You need to read your Bible.

In your example, God didn't ask jebhthah to do such a thing but rather jebhthah bargained with God in order to win his war against the ammonites. Jebhthah was heartbroken by his vow because his daughter was a virgin and he would be left without a lineage. It's a tragic story that has nothing to do with God asking. However, his daughter told him to go through with it. The only time God sacrificed a child was his own. That's how you know the bible is true. You lied. Liars suck. I expect you atheist moral degenerates to lie. Here is an outline of some evidences for God argued in world class debates. Nobody has defeated any one of them. Contingency - God is the best explanation for why something exists contingently rather than nothing. Something cannot begin from nothing without a cause. Therefore, Something necessarily self-exists. Self-existence is logically necessary. A Universe from Self -creation is logically impossible. Our Universe began to exist. Our Universe is not self-existent. Our Universe requires a causally antecedent agency to explain it’s existence. God does not - God has no beginning, but self-exists as prime. Cosmological - Absolute beginning confirmed by Big Bang cosmology requires a causal agency. Cause of Physical Universe cannot itself be Physical. Must be non-physical, space-less, timeless and willful to cause Physical Universe from Physical Nothingness. Design: Specified, ordered and integrated interdependencies aimed towards a third-purpose design objectives clearly infer intelligent agency. ‘Chance’ events within limited time-frames cannot rationally account for Design achievements. No sufficient Naturalistic mechanisms or explanations. Intelligent purpose is far more plausible explanation. Origin of radically sophisticated DNA information (software) driving molecular highly sophisticated molecular machines within each cell. Also, the design inference from irreducible complexity cannot and certainly has not been adequately explained. Precision FINELY TUNED constants and quantities present in initial conditions of the Universe to within infinitesimally narrow ranges to permit life. Universe is precision balanced on razor’s edge. This is virtual mathematical proof of intent - a function of mind - is necessary to explain these precision orderings. Ontological argument - God is a metaphysically necessary Being. Since God’s attributes are metaphysically possible, and all metaphysical possibilities must also be actual if possible, God must be actual. Intelligence in Nature: Intelligence, order and reason and information all from Nothingness? Spiritual instinct of man: Evolved to connect with something not actual? Free-will: Chemical causation is not free-will. Agency requires a soul. Chemicals have no moral duties. Moral Truth / Apprehension of Objective moral truth. Is rape really wrong or just an illusion? Is rape just a natural chemical byproduct caused by electrochemical activity (Atheism) - or an act of will. Massive Historical evidences of witnessed Miracles, visions, fulfilled prophecies,. Personal experiences: Ubiquitous NDE’s, supernatural phenomena Christ’s resurrection witnessed by hundreds. Absolute failure of Naturalism to explain a Finely tuned Universe, Finite Universe, Sentience, Rational truth and natural order, Moral Law (morality), intuition, intention, intelligence, purpose, free-will…

@@user-nz8uy1zm3z Yes, many advanced countries currently below replacement birth rate. An important statistic. But there are many unknowns and confounding variables on how this will play out in the future. Somewhat random variables include: 1) Increase in meat consumption as many previously impoverished populations gain affluence. As affluence grows many want to participate in 'upscale' lifestyles including meat consumption. But animal agricultural sector is a heavy contributor to GHGs, even greater than from combined global transportation sector. 2) This point follows from the previous one: Could rising impacts of climate change act to impair global population growth at some point? (Meat consumption not the only factor here.) 3) Era of abundance of energy and labour as predicted by master prognosticator, Tony Seba and others. What will be the effect on birth rate if and when near zero cost renewable energy, robotic labour and AI are all in play? Of course, there is an optimistic version. But broad use of AI and robotics could also be a nightmare for displaced workers without income.

To treat all religion as a monolithic entity with phrases like "religion was our first attempt..." does a really nice job of muddying the water. There have been and continue to be many religions with varying focuses. Yes, early religion grew out of an awe of nature, and a fear of ghosts. It led to many misunderstandings and disgusting practices, meant to appease the imagined god-of-the-gaps. But it also gave rise to the beginnings of morality. It shaped civilizations into what they are today. I get this impression that if religion were a pre-teen, with all its emotionality and misunderstandings, Hitch would say kill it, little realizing that if allowed to mature into the promise of what it could be, it would be quite desirable.

Which is one factor bringing about the ideas of Emerson and Thoreau. Hitchens, Dawkins and company leave me with the impression they all grew up watching the first Star Trek shows and thinking, "Gosh, that Mr. Spock is the way to go!" forgetting he was a fictional character.

Reason is higher than some levels of irrationality, 'cause it lifts you up and out of them, to thrive in higher worlds. But like the light we see is a small range in the middle of a larger range of all that is, so too is reason, and there are levels of irrationality that are higher than reason, because they lift you up out of reason, to fly and to thrive in higher worlds. Religion is one ladder up and out. Awake, we see only the rainbow fog of heaven's dark flowing river. Reason is not an end in itself, but a stage on the path to enlightenment, like the stage of being in a protective egg; but, escape driven cracks complete the egg. Through direct perception of truth, one's fitness for action in this universe ceases.

Someone wrote "Theology+fascism=religion". 15 likes. Goes without saying these people are atheist. What is theology? What is fascism? What is religion? I know atheism is a logical fallacy that assumes God is the religious idea of the creator of the creation to conclude wrongly no creator exists because a particular idea of God doesn’t exist. What would be the future of atheism if atheists continue to refuse to ask for proof that the Quran was memorized? I want to know if the Quran was memorized or not. I want to know the truth. Why did you believe the Quran was memorized?. Theology is philosophy or rational thinking and fascism is the opposite, like religion, like atheism. Emergency. I am a poet and artist searching for beauty and tranquility in a horrible world. Thank you.

i disagree strongly. we cannot keep a brain alive in jar yet, but people want to say science has all the answers. that's my equivalent to him saying something doesn't exist if you can't prove it. and what i said means just as much as the dollar store words he used to make his point. by the way, we skeptics. we are not skeptical of just one side of an argument. we are skeptical of both the one saying it is so, and the one saying it is not so. and we form our own opinions based around the notion that any ideas we form thereof in could be dead wrong.

God is not even in control of his own morality. In Ezekiel God clearly states that the sins of the parent do Not fall upon the child. So far, so good. But then in Numbers he turns around and orders the mass execution of innocent children merely because of who their parents are. After a military victory over the Midianites, Moses is angry with his generals for bringing back too many prisoners. He responds: 17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones [KILL EVERY MALE AMONG THE LITTLE ONES], and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. 18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. There is no evidence of any kind, scientific or otherwise to confirm its existence as the one true god, and so distinguish itself apart from all the many hundreds of other religions and gods that have come and gone. Which returns me to my original point I made in his thread - that all claims to its existence hinge entirely upon an unsubstantiated iron-age creation story - nothing else.
