    The bible itself is pretty hard on the kiddies. They can be murder when the village you are invading doesn't surrender. Except the virgin girls who you can keep for yourself. Boys teasing a bald prophet get torn apart by she bears. Abraham's son is almost gutted to prove a point. And many more.

You can shove Frank Tureks idiocy just right up your butt. There is no faith required in understanding how the world works. Just because you think you need at least two wheels to move around (bike), doesn't mean an unicycle doesn't exist ... It only means, that you are not aware that one does exist. And instead of accepting that one does exist, when other people tell you it does and even present you with one, you ignore it and still pretend that a bike is 'irreducible complex' and all parts need to be there and can't exist on their own ... @@thedolphin5428 Well, the main problem, for me, with the commandments is that christianity usurps the rights to claim they revolutionised how we guide each other in moral terms. Some commandments are stupid and some, while being good, are just not unique to christianity. There's no society in which killing is promoted and it survived into modern age, just as an example. Some of those commandments are just objectively good, but they are placed under the umbrella of christianity for no reason. You can be an anti-theist, muslim, sikh, whatever, and still firmly believe that some of the stuff written down there is true, because it just is, but it has nothing to do with christianity (in that context)

  • @thedolphin5428

    @thedolphin5428

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ashrasmun1 Hmmm. 1. My point was about how CH rephrased the question to suit his own polemic against it. 2. Ignoring for the moment all the shit Judeo-Christianity has said and done, you forget that we in the West have 5000 + 2000 years of moral structuring from the bible. Neither you nor I nor CH can say where planetary morals would have/might have been without that. Same as the West acclaims "Greek Democracy" without knowing what might have evolved without it?!?! Hence Judeo-Christianity has not really usurped such morals but clearly been a major force for them being adopted. A modern person cannot propose that we would have turned out the same or better without it. Had you been born in 15th Japan, or Arabia 500AD, you might have been glad of a few moral rules to guide society. As well, many atheist cultures (and non Judeo-Christian ones) have NOT become moral paragons over 5000 years. The advertised Atheist Moral Commonsense has not become the default in a lot of atheist places. Hence I think much of Judeo- Christian morality is so woven into the modern Western persona that you THINK you now see wiser moral paradigms NOT constructed around it. I think that's a pretence. I think your/my/our mental freedom to choose a higher moral plane ***IS A RESULT*** of our surrounding and inherent crypto-religious culture -- even if one is born into an atheist family (like me). Don't forget I'm a rabid atheist. So why would I support SOME of religion's values instead of completely tossing out baby AND bathwater? Because, as you say, good morals ARE FUNDAMENTAL but ... but ... but ... only to some people. Good morals are only the default for good-hearted people, of which there are many in both the religious AND non-religious fraternities. YOU may not want to kill someone, but many do. So the 10 commandments are good for the dickheads. Which is WHY I reckon they were first written, because Moses' people had turned into murderous, raping, coverting, adulterous, thieving morons. Moses didn't come down with 10 commandments in stone cos he thought they would survive till 2020. He just wanted to calm down the calamities in his tribes in the Sinai. He didnt write another 1247 equally important ones cos he ran out of tablets, I suppose. It is such a spurious argument to say "religion's are incomplete". They are products of their age. Duh. I think we owe the codification of the Judeo-Christian commandment Thou Shalt Not Kill into Britsh Law a great debt. Sure, YOU and I don't need it, but many do. Do you want those fuckers running around free, "exercising their inherent moral compassess"? As an atheist, one does not need to shit all over every aspect of organised religion -- as many do. It's not a black and white issue of "religion bad, non-religious good".. An intelligent, secular, humanitarian person can sort wheat from chaff in both paddocks. Atheism without any inherent spiritualism has, imo, become a licenscious, hedonistic, ammoral, hyper-libertarian force for rampant selfish, greedy, consumerism. True Christianity, as Jesus reputedly was, has and will continue to subtly guide Western civilisation for a long time to come because it is so woven into the cultural thread. Yes, there's lots of ridiculous shit in there too. But this video and my original post was about the question: Are not the 10 commandments a force for good? My reply is yes. Hitchens dodged the question ONLY BECAUSE he knows damn well they are, but needed to habitually spit invective at religion. So much for his intellectual integrity.

You can't make my children play with them, and you can't tell people that they are wrong, sinful or otherwise apostatic for playing with their own toys, because your toys forbid it. As an atheist, I don't give a shit if you remain neutral, frankly. From my experience God is not a nasty piece of work that’s exactly what the devil wants u to thinks not everything that’s evil looks evil lots of things that are nowadays accepted in society are evil just because they look pretty doesn’t mean they are aren’t evil evil doesn’t always come in ugly forms It pretties itself up before it reveals itself to you I don’t support slavery and neither does the Bible nowhere in the Bible does it actively condone slavery it just accept that for the time being slavery is part of the way the world ancient world existed so God put down laws for slavery such as discipline and other stuff. Many people were happy to be slaves because they couldn’t survive outside of slavery some people sold them selves into slavery just for food and a roof over their head. Not every slave master was horribly evil like European colonisers were to the African slaves in the African slave trade. Slavery was not exactly the way you think it was in the ancient world it wasn’t all doom and gloom. As I said many slaves would rather be slaves then be free and out of work not able to afford medicine or even a loaf of bread. Jesus did not come to abolish the sabbath but he said that the sabbath didn’t matter anymore really he let his disciples reap the ears of corn and eat them on the sabbath on Shabbat the festival acknowledging the Sabbath as sabbath was made for man not man for the sabbath. One tip of advice don’t try to generalise all Christians into one group we are all different denominations of Christianity Catholics believe some things I don’t orthodox believe other things that I don’t I’m an evangelical Protestant so I don’t agree with the catholic tradition of making Mary mother of Jesus more of a big thing then she was and a better yet please don’t generalise the Bible and cherry pick things out of context if you read the Bible from top to bottom trying to understand the meanings of Said words rather than just reading it and saying right I don’t care about any of that I’m going to rebel and not believe in any of it

I'll take that, no that bits icky, yes I'll have a bit of that, don't want any of that. I point out though that your books contradictions and your differences in dogmas are your problem to solve and not mine. For instance one commandment reads "You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife... or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbour's." Are you kidding .. his ox or donkey? Does anyone do that these days? Sounds like the antiquated voice of people from the past writing it. If it was the voice of god, surely god would not be too specific about ox and donkeys. There's no mention of not coveting your neighbour's car, his computer, his lawn mower, and maybe in the future his spaceship, etc.. If this was a commandment for all time, it should be general and skip specific references to livestock.
