I've encountered people who thought This is Spinal Tap was a legit documentary. To me, it just makes it funnier knowing they think it's for real.

I was born in 82 and thought they were a real band until I got to junior high

Christopher Guest's best line ever: "Get some rest. If you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything," which, in the context of what is about to happen in The Princess Bride, is indeed priceless.

Showed this movie to my girlfriend at the time. We paused it to get some snacks, and I asked her what she thought of it so far. She said, "It would be a lot funnier if it wasn't real."

My guitar teacher - muso for over 40 years - likes it but finds it a bit depressing - a bit too real sometimes 😂

I wish someone did a movie about focus groups, and take a bunch of classic movies, and change the endings to match the focus groups. Casablanca: she sticks around, he knocks her up, they fight a lot. Midnight cowboy, a doctor resuscitates him on the bus, he's fine, he gets in shape and teaches pilotes in Miami now. Deliverance, the two guys in the woods give them handy tips on the best spots for a picnic and everyone has a great day canoeing.

True, but a subtle difference perhaps is that Rutles documentary was clearly presented as a spoof of The Beatles whereas Spinal Tap was sold more as a real documentary of an actual metal band. I am old enough to remember when it was released in the U.S. and many people were not initially aware that it was a fake band. That's a testament to how great a job they did of suspending the audience's disbelief and persuading people. But I do agree that Rutles was the first mock rockumentary.

The Rutles were an obvious spoof of the Beatles. Tap was presented as a “real” doc. No comparison.

@@vipermad358 the only people that didn't realize that Tap was a spoof of Heavy Metal bands were those types bands that wanted to sue the producers because they all thought the movie was about them.

What you'd call an out of focus group.

Rob Halford of Judas Priest hadn’t heard of the movie when he surfed channels into the scene when the band gets lost backstage trying to go out and play. He figured out pretty quickly it was a spoof, but said that scene had happened to him and JP at a gig once. True to life!

I heard of the film Spinal Tap a long time before I ever saw it and so I thought it was about a real band. When I watched it, though, it was quite clearly a spoof.

When he says "the little guy" he means Tom Cruise, right?

I knew a guy called Matt, and he didn't get it either. He actually needed to be told!

Spinal Tap just gets funnier as the years pass and you realise that it was based on various real bands, with a little embellishment here and there. Pretty sure Led Zeppelin's manager didn't use a cricket bat for example...

If you watch Decline of Western Civilization you'll see guys saying they couldn't find their way to the stage. Props & pyrotechnics were crap.

This is hilarious... but honestly, as the parent of an autistic child, I have that thought all too unhealthily often.

I based several years of my life on this movie.

I was never into rock as a kid in the 80s. Head the name Spinal Tap from high school and the This is Spinal tap. Thought that was their album name. Wasn't till mid 2010s that I discovered they were a parody band!

To be fair, the Spinal Tap is one big inside joke. You have to know about the music genre they're ridiculing to get it. Outsiders can't tell parody from reality, so it isn't funny to them. It's not that they're dumb, they're just not in on the joke.

Not just outsiders. Insiders can't tell parody from reality either. Ozzy Osbourne saw the movie and thought that it was a real documentary. And wondered why he never heard of Spinal Tap. That scene where Spinal Tap can't find the stage door, and they go around in circles, well that happened to Black Sabbath many times.
