One of my all-time favourites. I have a very vivid memory of playing Lotus II on Christmas Day '91 on my new A500+ while the table was being set for lunch. My mum complained that she couldn't watch me because constantly going up and down the hills was giving her motion sickness.

Fondly remember the original Amiga Lotus titles, proud to have worked on the PS2/GC/PC Lotus Challenge game (circa 2001) and lucky enough to own a Lotus around the same time. I do feel that these Gremlin/MF titles helped make the Amiga platform feel more AAA and helped Lotus cars as a brand, inspiring us kids to dream of buying them later. Good times and fun video guys thank you!

I played this one a lot when I was young and my favorite thing about it (beside the music!) was that there were so many environments and weather effects, which gave it an atmosphere and "vibe" that are hard to put into words. Also, the DOS version that I played had 3 cars, not 2, and (more importantly) there was in-game music. In fact, you could select which music track you wanted to listen to each race, like in Outrun. A classic this.

Me and a group of mates surrounding my friends Amiga and TV in his bedroom playing against the Lotus games was peak multiplayer gaming fun at the time. Although people in the audience are looking back at the logs and water that you have to jump over like it’s a bad game mechanic, it certainly wasn’t at the time. It was part of the challenge of playing the game against each other. It was never meant to be a Gran Turismo simulation type game. It provided hours of fun’s and I think the Amiga version is even better than the later Top Gear for the SNES. Shout out the developer who I feel didn’t get credit for producing such a brilliant looking and fast paced arcade action game. 👏

It's great to see a nice crowd gathering together at The Cave! While I never did play Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 back in the day. I did have a wonderful time with the Top Gear games on the SNES. My friends and I spent many, many hours enjoying them back then. The music while you played really helped drive the experience to even greater heights! I can still remember renting the first game, not really sure if it was going to be any good or not. But once I heard the opening music and saw the name Gremlin Graphics in the opening credits I knew it was going to be a good time!

I think the first time I played Lotus 2 was either slightly before or immediately after playing Lotus 1. I bought Lotus 1 as part of a compilation pack, and it either included Lotus 2 or else I already owned Lotus 2 and just gave 1 a brief run to see what it was like. In any case, Lotus 2 was the superior game and encapsulates what was good about the series for me. Regarding the lack of in game music in Lotus, I like just having the sound effects of the car and the environment, it's atmospheric and I wouldn't want any other sounds interfering with that.

I loved this game. It was literally Lotus 2 that made me love Lotus cars. I could only play it when i was around a friends house and they had Lotus 2, as we had a PC a home, so i would hassle them into letting me play it. As far as 12/13 year old me was concerned, this was the Outrun experience in the home. Until Lotus 3 came out on the PC with the KECS? feature that let you do some sort of procedural generation of tracks.

  • @RMCRetro

I am probably the only guy who has never played Lotus 2 and never played a Lotus title on the Amiga. I got Lotus 1 for our C128 (so in C64 mode obvs) from the UK so of course it was on cassette, and Lotus III I have only played on PC. So when my A500 is up and running, I have to rectify that and play all 3. Great show, guys! :)

I used to play this game on DOS (it was pretty much a straight port of the Amiga version - back when people were seemingly not aware that VGA could give you more than 32 colours on screen, anyway - but with FM music) and it was such a good game.

Great game for Amiga, found Lotus Trilogy for sale in 2019, which includes all three Lotus games, and instantly they became my favourite Amiga games, at least for A500 which I have. Later found also Lotus Challenge game for Playstation 2, but it's made by different company. I've always loved cars and racing games. First one was Out Run for Commodore 64, have it for Amiga and PC as well, as the KIXX release had 3,5" disks for both. Also I enjoy playing modern games like Gran Turismo games on Playstation consoles, and Forza Motorsport / Horizon games on Xbox One S. In Forza Horizon 4 there's even an event about Out Run to play, using Ferrari 512TR, a facelifted Testarossa, that was fun as I had Amiga Out Run running while played that Forza Horizon 4 event on Xbox One S :D

So in frustration i had a look at the code myself and see that its extremely well written in a time were amiga knowledge was different from today. All in all its an Amiga gold game for me , but in sound, art and code and game play. Could it be done better ? Yes but not by much.... its very impressive and up there with the best of the best

I think the different environments in the game was crucial to having an interesting game. The unique track loading screen and music gave you a feeling for whats to come. And being able to drive in the city and then on the snow in the mountains, and so on was great. I never thought it didn't make sense or anything. Just driving on regular race tracks or dry tarmac or asphalt would be so much more boring.

Great video of a superb racing series. I was only playing the first 2 a few days ago. I did remind myself how bad outrun on the Amiga was before playing them and all of the Lotus games are a technical marvel for the Amiga. I agree that the half screen view on the first one was poor, but I did actually prefer the circuit based style to the point to point racing on part 2. That’s strange as outrun (point to point) is my all time favourite arcade racer. The AI was rather poor and it was more about timing your pass with their pre programmed zig zag across the screen.
