Ghost apologist here. Ofc Ghost do not actually like cruelty and acts of violence. They are nice and wholesome people in person. The "... makes her one of us." is part of their act. It is satire of Catholicism and Satanism.

Yeah, there's this basic concept about poetry we learn in school, called the "speaker", which is basically the character behind the words written. It separates the poem from the poet. These two seem to confuse the author with the speaker.

  • 6 жыл бұрын

It's easy to get the "act" if you don't believe in the metaphysical mythos surrounding it. If you do, you buy it.

Christianity and the rest of the religious ritual is all an act, so of course these two don't understand it's pretend. It's real to them. And if you write something like this song, or named your band after a myth, then you must believe wholeheartedly in said myth! And you must be evil incarnate! Per VinAnd Sori. They're gullible people. I don't have any prejudice around this, despite what they feel. These two would fit well in with those during the Satanic Panic. I wonder if they even know of this particular era...?

the video was made from scenes of the movie '"Countess Dracula" (a fictional telling of the Elizabeth Bathory story) and a scene from the movie "Hostel 2" in which a woman pays to live out a bathory fantasy or, given the location of the story being eastern europe, is actually Countess Bathory, still alive after centuries and still killing virgins to appear young, the director was vague and left it up to interpretation.

Elizabeth is an anglicized version of her name. Her Hungarian name is Erzsebet. She tortured and mutilated the girls and was suspected of cannibalism. Despite the bathing in blood being the main thing she is known for, it's not known fact. Those accounts emerged later and weren't considered to be reliable. They are possibly an embellishment of the story that she was caught in the act of torture and was covered in blood. This also may not have been true. The exact number of girls she killed isn't known. It was recorded it at 80 which I guess was the figure they knew definitively from accomplices testimonies and what they found. A servant girl claimed to have seen a record book listing the number of girls at 650 but the book was never found. Her family was extremely influential which is how she didn't receive a proper trial and the death penalty, instead being put under house arrest. She was kept in a set of brick rooms in the castle for 4 years and died there .... You should do Cradle Of Filth Cruelty And The Beast.

Excellent answer, accurate history facts and your points are on the spot, there´s no official account of how many girls she killed, and is all speculations and so glad you pointed how her is name is written in Hungarian few people knows that, and i agree much of her story is actual fiction but fascinating nonetheless. Really show us how dark our human nature can get sometimes. I agree you guys should check the cruelty and the beast album by cradle of filth, especially the song Bathory Aria you´d be surprise with that one.

Yeah, it's weird that the whole fountain of youth idea is as widespread as it is, though I guess it's powerful imagery to invoke a literal blood bath. But I personally find it much more disturbing if she killed dozens of servant girls not because she sought to stay young, but just because she wanted to. Makes her so much more menacing.

  • @obsourum

    @obsourum

I agree. It is much more likely that her motivation was sadistic pleasure because she didn't just kill them, they were beaten, mutilated and had bite marks .... It's extremely disturbing.

  • @Necronomous

obsourum Well, that she bathed in the blood is quite accurate. Because she had some manly servants as well, not only young girls. One of these men was arrested as well in the aftermath, and he told them she was a sick woman. I mean, they found torturedevices in the castle. They was only made on one purpose. Drain the blood from the victims. And the man said the truth, that she bathed in their blood, because she wanted to be forever young. This started when another servant that was kicked out from the castle, also a man, he saw her watching herself in the mirror, and her hand was not as smooth and young as usual. She accidentally cutted her self in her hand. She watched the blood, and in her thoughts her hand got smooth and young again. She saw the servant watching her, and in rage she kicked him out. So there was some servants that told the stories, mostly men. The downfall was a young girl, that had courage enough to escape from the castle, and she filled in the story about Erzebet, with the manly servants that had served her in the past. So therefor they got a quite accurate history about Erzebet. But did she ate the victims? NO! She did not. So yes, you saying there is no known facts she bathing in blood. But servants from her past, a girl managed to flee, both servants and that girl told the story she bathed in blood. And in the castle, they even found an Iron Maiden, dangling from the roof, and under it, it was a bathtub. Also facts from the local lawmen. So that is why they also has the story about the bathtub, and in many versions they let the lady bath in the tub with blood. Yes, the 650 killings, that is the only thing they don't know about. Theonly found about 80 graves around the castle's parameters. So perhaps, her goal was to kill 650 young girls and bath in their blood, would make Erzebet forever young and immortal. That was what stood in the book, but she never reached that goal, and only 80 was killed and burried. Only my theory though. Another fun fact is that Erzebet's history are twinned together with Vlad Dracul's history when it comes to the vampire Dracula? Vlad's cruelty was twinned together with Erzbet's lust for blood. Violà, the modern vampire was born. Well, I know Bram Stoker only talked about Vlad, but he later on said he heard the legend of Erzebet Báthory as well. So therefor they say that Erzebet was the very first vampire, and I guess you also know about Dracula's fine eye for a beautiful untouched maiden, with skin so pale and smooth like the moonlight. That he thirsted for her blood in an unusual way? Well, that was taken directly from Erzebet's history. Because she only bathed in virginblood. And her victims had a smooth silky pale skin, untouched by no man. And sure Vlad was bloodthirsty in his way, but Erzebet's bloodthirst was the reason Dracula became a bloodsucking vampire in Bram Stokers Dracula, and that if Dracula got injuried, or old and wrinkled because he did not drink blood for a while. Blood restores him to his youth, going from old to young again. Or perhaps that was made by Hollywood-vampires now days? They mixed Erzebets theory in there as well in series and movies about vampires indeed.

Hey guys. I really liked this reaction, can't wait for the next Ghost song. My opinion about the ''not understanding why highlighting Elizabeth and not the peasant girls'' part: First, because of what Vin said: There's a Bathory in all of us. The Vikings argument also applies. And second, because Sori understands Elizabeth's intentions even though she does not supports Elizabeth's actions. I think metal is in itself a message from the metal listener to the non-listener and the message could be: ''Don't hide. The world has some darkness in it. Let's face it''. OK. Thanks for the reaction again guys. Peace.

I think she's such a big incon mainly due to the Darkness of the story. A lot of Metal revolves around darkness, especially early ghost songs. And Bathory being such a dark black metal band that her story just fits perfectly. And when the song states "makes her one of us" I think that it just represents that it makes her a human being. Simply because humans can be the pinnacle of evil and can do some sinister things given the opportunity . There are some figures of history that can be stated as pure evil, Bathory being one of those people, along with others such as Delphine lalaurie and Joseph mengele who also committed such sinister acts. Anyway this is just my opinion on the subject matter. The thing i have alwayd found intriguing is that we dont really know what is good and whats evil, its all based upon belief. We will never know whats right, we just have to believe that certain things are wrong. P. S Carach angren - the funerary dirge of a violinist 😛

band bathory dont have much with cruelty of elizabeth bathory, except the name. their first albums were start of black metal, involved with satanist topics but in more mythical and epic way. but later on, since beginning of 90s it became something very different, inspired with norse mythology and epic tales and history and nature. you should check their (his actually, quorthon was the man behind the band who did everything) work from that period (album hammerheart is my recommendation, anything from that album is just epic, in true sense of that word). quorthon (RIP) was a true artist, poet and philosopher. he was inspiration for so many viking, heavy, black and doom metal bands. he was one of a kind artist and musician. btw, great video, reaction and conversation afterwards. keep up great work.

You said you dont hear rappers sing about this. Well let me educate you: Theres a genre called horrorcore within rap that has dark, diabolical almost psychodelical sounds with rappers rapping about evil deeds or satanism. It's birthplace is Memphis. Looking into Memphis underground rap you'll without a doubt find horrorcore. Which in truth, in sound and beats, is the precursor of modern trap.

Also, to you wanting to know why she's celebrated, here's my two cents: I think it's because the origin of heavy metal comes from basically the same time period. There's a certain set of notes called "The Devil's triad" that were at one time outlawed because it went against music that was worship music of the church. You've heard them, it's the first three notes on guitar in Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath. So this type of music already has it's association with Satan. Move on history, and the earliest blues guitar players are rumored to have sold their soul to the devil to play guitar. Then move forward to Elvis and his beginnings, and how despite how popular he was, his music was widely regarded as sinful and sexual and that people shouldn't be listening. All the way up through bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, all widely considered to have ties to the occult and mysticism, then through part two of America's satanic panic in the 80's and the PMRC and how evil metal was. They even had "De-Metalization" camps for people concerned their kids were in league with Satan for listening to heavy metal that they could send their kids to (Sorta like the "Pray the Gay Away" camps that are around now). Her being celebrated is the metal community's attempt to fly in the face of the rest of music and society in general to show how little they care for normal conventions of social norms. Add in the fact that Satanism now is mostly just anti-christian sentiment wrapped up in a satanic bow, it's done to be purposefully offensive to people in order to safeguard "outsiders" from coming into the metal community because it's been persecuted for so long. So since satanism has always been linked to metal, rock, blues and anything centered around around that triad, it's been adopted as a sort of decoration of the music since like Dracula, she's linked to satanism away from the music. I liken it to canonization of a Saint for the Catholic Church, or Knighthood for someone in England.

I dont think you get why songs like this exist, there is "good and evil" and a lot of people believe that both are positive when there is balance so songs like this (at least for me) are to remind us that not everyone is a saint and that people don't necessarily have to try to be one

When he sings "One of us", I think he mean human beings, mankind. Man has in itself depths of cruelty, or thoughts, that most suppress. But given the right situation, a seemingly normal everyday kind person can turn into an sadistic evil person. Just see how war can transform a normal person to in many cases committing despicable acts of cruelty. Or just look what people are willing to do during starvation. Of course there are lots of people that would never stray into acts like this, no matter the circumstances, but this "demon" is inside "us" , human beings, mankind.

I’d watch some interviews with Tobias, you’ll see how much the act influences the production eventually. As far as the content of the song, I’d say our inherent selfishness as people can be absolutely ghoulish and darker than any historic text could’ve told us. Also, within most “Metal Communities”, most are actually atheist, satanism is just a front to piss off/shock folks. Most Satanists are also non-theistic, they don’t believe in the Christian antagonist, but moreso they believe in a hedonistic approach which means if you serve yourself, you’ll be happy which ends up making those around you happy, because they’re dealing with a happy person vs a dissatisfied person

As far as Elizabeth Bathory most scholars now believe that she was framed by Roman Emperor Matthais II and Gyorgy Thurzo. Elizabeth's husband, Ferenc, was a commander in Rome's war against the Turks and the Emperor owed quite a bit a money to the family after the wars end. Ferenc became ill and lost both his legs when he was 47 and then died when he was 48. When her husband died while Elizabeth legally owned the Bathory land and fortune the nobleman Gyorgy Thurzo was left in charge of it. After she rebuffed his his attempts to marry her, and thus seize control of their vast lands an wealth, he conspired with Lutheran minister to frame Elizabeth. The minister who had no known ties of any kind the family started filing reports about her "crimes" with every ecclesiastical secular court that would accept them. Eventually the rumors became so far spread that the Emperor ordered a full investigation and appointed Gyorgy Thurzo as the investigator. The investigation from the time it was ordered in Rome to the time when Gyorgy declared her guilty, in Hungary was only a single month. Elizabeth and her four closest servants were quietly arrested and the only people found being held prisoner in the castle were prisoners of war captured by her late husband when he fought against the Turks and were no worse off then POWs anywhere else in Europe. They were quickly put through a sham trial that included testimony acquired by torture and allowing evidence to be emitted but never actually presented in court. One servant girl was tortured by gouging out her eyes and cutting off her breasts in order to get her to provide incriminating testimony. The mythical 650 victims number came from an illiterate servant that claimed during the trial that Elizabeth kept a diary with the names of all her victims in it. The diary however was never presented in court and to this day there is no evidence that it every existed. The Emperor originally wanted everyone put to death (thus not only clearing his debt but allowing him to seize that land and fortune) but Gyorgy intervened and made a deal with Elizabeth and her oldest son. In exchange for her admitting to 36 specific deaths (which were the result of serving as an untrained doctor for the wounded during the Turk war) and wiping the Emperors debt only her servants would be put to death and she could pass her land and fortune onto her son instead of it all being seized the Emperor. The Emperor then handsomely rewarded Gyorgy for his "good deed" of helping to stop Elizabeth.

Haven't heard about her being biologically related Vlad but it wouldn't surprise me with them being in the same region and how nobility like to only be with other nobles. Given that both of them were used as inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula I did see them being related in the literary sense. From what I know of Vlad he wasn't so much framed for things he didn't do but what he did do was exaggerated by his enemies to demonize him.

Mercyful Fate - Satan's Fall Ghost was heavily influenced by them for their first record. The only difference is MF didn't try to make it poppy and King Diamond (vocalist/songwriter) is a true Satanist and was good friends with Anton Levey. They were one of if not the first metal bands to use satanic imagery and lyrical content and King Diamond also influenced the black metal movement by his use of theatrics and corpse paint! This song has some of the best riffs ever!

This video is so old you'll probably never see this, But Vin.. You were talking about not understanding the metal connection with Bathory, Borden, etc. It's actually pretty simple... Horror Movies. Heavy Metal has been linked to Horror films for the entirety of its existence. In fact, If like myself, you consider the first heavy metal band to be Black Sabbath... Then the entire concept for this style of music has its roots in horror films. The band were originally a blues band called "Earth".... But they were outside their rehearsal studio one day... that just happened to be across the street from a theater where a horror movie was playing, and there was a huge line of people going to see this "Scary" movie. This started a conversation between the members about how odd it is that people are so fascinated with being scared. So, they took that idea, and incorporated it into their music... and what is scarier than Satan? So, that's how the whole occult thing came into it. Plus Geezer Butler, the bassist, who wrote the majority of the lyrics, was a big fan of scary literature, and he was fascinated with the occult, read a lot of books on the occult, etc. But yeah... that was a big long way to say... the fascination with scary imagery and lyrical content and even the "scary" or "Spooky" sound of a lot of metal... all comes from that strange fascination with horror movies, books, etc. So there ya have it lol.

I think I might be able to explain the lack of concern for the families and the celebration of Elizabeth to some extent. We don't really know those families. I mean, I'm sure they have offspring that are around today, but I don't know that those people even know how related they are to those victims. Most people don't really know their family tree beyond a few generations. On the other hand, Bathory is fascinating in that you have a horror story that is rooted in reality. It's a good horror story too. I would assume if we lived closer to that time and more in that region the way we discuss the situation would be different. Think about Columbine for a moment (weird that this comes up after the fireside). When it happened there was a lot of it in the media, but the people that celebrated it weren't the mainstream narrative. Now that time has passed and the immediacy of the situation is no longer present we talk about it almost like it's a story. Very few people still talk about how the families were effected, and given a couple generations I don't think anyone will because those people will be so far removed from the situation. As for the way Tobias Forge does melodies and metal? Blue Oyster Cult. Blue Oyster Cult is the band that Ghost is aping the sound of. 100%. I mean, Ghost sound more like Blue Oyster Cult than Greta Van Fleet sound like Led Zeppelin.

You both are amazing people so open and real! Your having fun together researching some of my favorite artist and music! I’ve always been drawn to metal and rocknroll. Anyway I think they are referring to people of power that can commit murder of the innocent. It’s a reflection of what happened then and still is today in each of us really. But obviously this was the extreme murders that are so violent and memorable that we use it as an outlet to to stream our human defects. But that may not make sense because it’s only a piece of so many beliefs in all of us. Anyway thanks for sharing your time with the community, i aspire to be as open and free as you both are! I hardly think the song is a celebration to Elizabeth. When he sings: "She was an evil woman with an evil old soul. Piercing eyes emotionless a heart so black and cold", it doesn't have a ring of celebration. If he had sung: "She was an misunderstood, and wrongly portrayed lady, with a decent soul. Kind eyes and a loving heart, warm and embracing" , then it would be a celebration, and an effort trying to diminish her acts, and portray her in a favorable light.

When Vin says that Bathory was like female version of Dracula, i remember a curiosity about Elizabeth Bathory that her family was, indeed, in the same monarch order that count Vlad Tepes (Dracula) was, it was called Order of the Dragon. The order was similar to the templar order and was founded in 1408 by the king of Hungary and her queen to protect the royal family. And some legends about them circles the order either.

Basically metal used to talkin about dark aspects of the mankind. And if I judge in general hip hop or rap for example they could be very obsessed by drugs and be breakin the law.... And It's very disrespectful judged all the rappers and hip hop community.... Nobody is a pure soul guys. Neither you christians. You should tryin to analysis the begin of the Christianism raised by a lot of pagan inocent blood. I don't judge you guys but you are far away of what the metal is. Mixing history and another aspects of the clip in this case. Metalhead are not just "obssesed "by evilish things"... I felt offended personally. Sorry about my english but I cannot refuse to just gave my Point of my metalheart view. Hope that you really realizing that I not trying to offended any of you guys. But you have a wrong and twisted vision from the metal community. Just my humble and honest opinion. Greetings from Brazil.
