Psalm 22 "My God My God why have you forsaken me?.... bulls of bashan surround me they pierce my hands and feet.... they cast lots for my garments... "“He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him.(R) Let him deliver him,(S) since he delights(T) in him.” "I am poured out like water" etc like with other passages in the psalms, genesis, (including theophany appearances in the torah) Isaiah, Zechariah, Daniel, Proverbs etc are considered messianic in rabbinic Judaism as the suffering servant messiah Ben Joseph, and to Christianity as Yeshua, Jesus bless you ❤ Edit: To expand on this is of course Isaiah 53 where you have the servant being crushed by God as an offering for sin for others, who dies and sees life and his seed afterwards, who dies with thieves and in a rich man's tomb, and who was despised and rejected, so why there is a common view of two messiahs, Ben yosef and Ben David, one messiah as the suffering servant and another as the conqueror who sets up the kingdom. Isaiah 52 the messiah draws Israel back to himself. Some fun and sad things are like people would say Jesus didn't exist despite Tacitus, Suetonius, Pliny the younger, Lucian etc and the apostles writings and the successors/church fathers of the apostles/bishops writings and josephus, because "Nazareth doesn't exist" until of course Nazareth was discovered, or another one, "there was no synagogue in capnernaum" until we found it, or Thomas Payne in age of reason "Bible is false because there were no kings during Jesus's time" until we found King Herod Agrippa's coins, or "Jesus wasn't buried in a tomb because crucifixion victims weren't buried in tombs" until we found crucifixion victims with the nails still in tombs in tombs. More cool things, are Jesus sweating blood in the garden of Gethsemane, this is a real phenomenon called Hematidrosis where death row inmates sweat blood, also another when Jesus is pierced and water and blood come out this actually happens when water builds around the lungs, it confused some early church fathers on the spiritual meaning, but it's a real phenomenon that occurs as well. Many rabbis into gematria etc say there is a curse upon reading Daniel 9 because it says Messiah The Prince must come and bring in eternal righteousness before the destruction of Solomon's temple, no wonder they say that as then if Messiah didn't come before 70 a.d. there is no messiah, those who have divided messiah into two were confused if the messiah would come riding on a donkey or horse, so the two messiahs, as opposed to the jews who believe in Jesus and himself, who state himself and two arrivals. Of course this is why Islam falls quickly because while they call Jesus messiah they don't understand what it means, and Muhammad of course denied the historical fact of Jesus dying by crucifixion (Which besides tacitus mentioning pontius pilate doing it to him, we even have an inscription that was uncovered oh pilate and dates lining up with his time being the procurator/prefect over Jerusalem) besides Muhammad being the total opposite of Jesus, Muhammad had sex with his child bride Aisha who was nine, he beheaded and crucified people, said not to trust jews and Christians, he had Ethiopian slaves and called them raisin heads, he called jews monkeys and rats, he slaughtered villages and the wives of families he killed said you can take them and have sex with them, he got caught having sex with his slave by Aisha and said he would not do it anymore then conveniently "Allah" comes and says it's fine and he can, he's a textbook false prophet, with of course takiyah being they will lie to you about what I said above, Islam is meant to subjugate the world I'd into belief by force, if you don't convert you must pay a tax, if you don't pay it you die. Allah has no love for unbelievers unlike Jesus who loves his enemies and we are meant to love all even to death, I'd write more but youtube doesn't like long messages, with eastern thought eternal universe doesn't fit the mold because and infinite amount of successive events becoming then impossible to have the present, we would never reach today because we would always have a yesterday or event before this moment, an immaterial, spaceless, timeless, mind (agency) bringing space-time into reality, is the best explanation for why anything exists including someone as amazing and as lovely as yourself 😊 So the disciples who say "For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty." And "13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith. 15In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God. For we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead, but He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep." Since the witnesses knew whether or not they were lying and knew what it would mean to continue to say he did in fact rise and is the Messiah and God in the flesh then yes I believe them as The Messiah had to come during that time, a mind/agency creating the universe is the best cause for reality, Jesus is the most moral, truthful and charismatic and loving and honest person there is, and the most important and influential, (Buddha said he was still searching for truth, Jesus say, "I am the truth, the way and the life") Jesus gives us love and salvation as a gift without earned merit by us, not working our way to the truth or God or eternal destiny through every other religious and spiritual framework, he loves you and cares so much for you before he created you and wants a living relationship with you here and now not just after you die 😊 There's a million other things to cover that I want to say but this is probably a good stopping point but Jesis wants to remove the shadow in your life and Jesus wants you as you are right now he wants your heart and to live in you and you to know his love personally 😊 I had people prophesy over me very specific things nobody else knew about my past, things I was thinking or experienced even just the day before, Jesus healed me of sleep paralysis I had for years, depression and loneliness, I had a dream of a woman named Heather and a voice telling me their dad had died, a couple days later i meet them and they tell me about how they had just lost their dad that week, I feel God telling me to sit down and close my eyes and I see an outline of someone going to the bathroom very bizarre, then shortly after someone out of the blue asking me to pray for them as they are having trouble going to the bathroom, another was I ask Jesus alone "are you my buddy?" A couple hours later someone contacts me and they say "Yes Jesus is saying yes he is your buddy" another time was I obsessing a little over this blue suit and someone prophecies "I see you in this blue suit" etc, another time I was testing this whole thing and I'm about to be prophecied over and I have my Google notes out I had tried writing out a little story and it was about a fire and forest being burnt down and I ask God to confirm if he wants me to write this and sort of as a test because everything had been scary accurate and the person right after says "God wants you to be his little stick lit ablaze with his love, it may not seem like much but one small flame can burn down a whole forest" 😂 another one was I had this. Surreal vision looking at stars, shortly after someone messages me saying Jesus is looking at a telescope with you saying to you "everything I have is yours even the stars" another one I was in the bathroom asking God for a message for my friend Moses in Nigeria and as I'm leaving the bathroom i freeze in place and go into this bizarre trance like Peter in the book of acts and I see my friend Moses as a child playing with a toy firetruck and Jesus sitting next to him with love, I quickly tell them and they are in shock as they had just thrown away that toy that same day, another time I had gotten a word from God about someone close to me who hadn't accepted Jesus and that they had been praying to God secretly, I told them that and the look on their face was priceless as I had no idea they had been praying to God at all, they were shook 😄 this is only a handful of many a 100 times in just the last 12 months after 5 years of me being born again, there's so many more amazing things that have happened but you are beautiful and desired of God, he is a gentleman and will not force you to choose him or love him but he loves so so much, he's asking you if you will come, he will love you and cherish you everyday of your life, he will never abandon you, I beg you to take a chance and not reject God's love for you, he wants to heal you and you to enjoy a living relationship between you, God bless you so much, Jesus says to come to him for rest your weary soul he is humble and meek and tender and gentle, he loves you so much he knows everything about you, nothing about you is unimportant to him 😭❤❤ If you repent and call on his name you will be saved from hell and Jesus's wrath and judgement for all have sinned!! ❤ For God so loved The World that gave his only begotten son that whoever should believe in him will not perish but have eternal life!! 💙🙌🏻 repent all have sinned and fallen short!!❤️‍🔥❤♥️

@@Spartan265I’m not sure to what extent wars are fought for purely religious reasons. That’s a constant narrative you hear but really the main ones I can think of are SOME of the crusades. But even then a lot of the belligerents were involved for their own reasons. This is especially true when you look at wars during the reformation. Most of the lords who broke with Catholicism did so for financial reasons

I remember when my History teacher recommended us to read the Bible for a better historical understanding, she said "you don't have to believe what's inside of it but that's what nearly all people in the last 1500 years in the western world believed and what formed their worldview, art and lifestyles... Especially for Art you need to know a good amount of the biblical chronic to understand most of the symbolism and motives of the most host historic pieces of art"

Yes and no. Reading the bible gives you some glimpse at what People believed, but most people never believed "the Bible" most people didn't read the full Bible. They believed what stories they heard and were told about the stories in the Bible and the saints. Especially the stories about the saints played a large role in every day life. To get a true understanding of those influences to only read the Bible is insufficient you also need to read Greek poetry, myths and philosophy, Babylonian myths etc. The Bible is one piece to gain a better historical understanding and a better understanding of art.

I’m a lapsed Catholic/agnostic who went to a Catholic all-girls high school, a Jesuit university for my bachelors, and a Dominican university for my masters. One of my biggest takeaways from the Jesuit school was finding a love of the history of early Christianity. It’s fascinating! There are some really good PBS shows on the topic. My favorite that I tend to rewatch around Christmas or Easter is Frontline’s two-part “From Jesus to Christ,” which has been posted here on YT. The first hour is on Jesus and his ministry, the second on the aftermath of Jesus’ death through the Judean revolt (focusing on Paul), the third on the writing of the gospels through the Bar Kochba revolt, and the last starts around 100 AD through Constantine’s conversion. It’s really well-done, told by historians and theologians.

And here, dear viewers, one can see how real historians deal with information, its processing and distribution: one is open about one's prejudices, is open and respectful of those of others, and one realises that one's own prejudices influence one's own perspecctives as much as those as others. Kudos to Matt and to Chris on that one. That's the only way we will be able to enhance our knowledge and enable our search for truth (whatever that may be)

Hey Chris, here's a correction, while it is correct that there were "Habiru" overrunning Canaan during the 15th century, the term "Habiru" is just a vague term to refer to a social class of bandits, brigands and etc that where living outside cities in Mesopotamia and can refer to a wide set of different peoples and while Israelites were technically classified as Habirus, they weren't the only one. So we can't really know for sure what specific Habirus that were being mentioned by the Canaanite kings

While I knew the basic narrative of events, I ran across a book that really has added to my understanding of that time frame, “Jewish Backgrounds of the New Testament” by J. Julius JR Scott. He goes into the emotional impact of the loss of the temple and the influence of Hellenism. I am fascinated how if you study the history of religion ( in particular the inheritance of other cultures/stories along with the obviously political and human interference in their development) you can still believe in that religion in supremacy to others? Not so much the faith in the spiritual/divine/supernatural, but more in the specific doctrinal beliefs and Church. Usually I wouldn't ask as other communities are likely to either take offense or desend into unpleasantness. If any believers here could give me their insight it would be much appreciated, and I hope this comes across in they way its intended (curiosity not condemnation) much love brothers in history

As a Christian with a keen interest in all types of history I don't see any conflict between that and believing that Christianity is true. I think there is an exceptionally good case that the Bible is historically reliable, that Jesus claimed to be God, and proved it by rising from the dead. I take the New Testament as the preserved teaching of the Apostles (and so the only reliable record of what the first Christians taught), and it shows that Christ and the Apostles treated the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) as authoritative. So that gives me the scriptures, and all the essential doctrines of Christianity are either explicitly taught there or can clearly be derived from it. This persuades me that Christianity it true. Which necessarily means that all the other religions are not (since their central truth claims are incompatible). This perspective plus my knowledge of history means I reject the idea that there is one denomination of Christianity that has got everything right (it's theoretically possible, but extremely unlikely). There's plenty of clear historical evidence that the denominations that claim to be the one true church all hold to doctrines that were later innovations (and usually elevate these to essential doctrines). I think the church I am currently a member of has the vast majority of secondary doctrines right, but I'm not going to be dogmatic on that. The way Christianity developed from that origin point doesn't cause me any problems when it comes to my doctrine, because whilst later Christian thought is worth studying and learning from, the only parts I consider in any way authoritative are the major creeds whose doctrine is derived from scripture. I hope this helps clarify the kind of perspective you were asking about. Do let me know if I've been unclear on anything, or if I've misunderstood some aspect of what you were curious about.

If you are interested in the Assyrian Nestorian Church, there is a really good book about it by Christoph Baumer titled "The Church of the East: An Illustrated History of Assyrian Christianity". It is an amazing history, the Nestorian church spreading all the way through Central Asia into China, a few times it came very close to becoming a state religion and thus getting more power but in the end it always didn't work out that way and nowadays it is a very small and endangered church... By the way, the author, Christoph Baumer, has a few other very interesting books about lesser known historical regions and topics: 4 volumes on the history of Central Asia, the history of the Caucasus (second volume will be published this year), a book about Tibet. All are very much worth reading!

26:01 The Council of Nicaea had nothing to do with the canonization of the Bible. The process of canonization was a gradual one, and there was no single point at which all Christians agreed on which books should be included. However, there are a few councils that played important roles in the development of the New Testament canon. The Council of Rome in 382, under Pope Damasus I, is often cited as the first council to formally accept the current canon of the New Testament. However, it is important to note that this council did not actually create the canon; it simply reaffirmed a list of books that had already been circulating among Christian communities for centuries. The Synod of Hippo in 393 and the Council of Carthage in 397 both reaffirmed the list of books that had been accepted at the Council of Rome. These councils were attended by a large number of bishops from North Africa, and their decisions were widely accepted by other Christian communities. The Council of Carthage in 419 again reaffirmed the list of books that had been accepted at the previous councils. This council was attended by a even larger number of bishops than the previous two councils, and its decisions were even more widely accepted. The Council of Ephesus in 431 affirmed the authority of the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The Council of Chalcedon in 451 affirmed the authority of the rest of the New Testament books. Thus it's important to correct misinformation in regards to the canonization of the Bible, as it leads to the incorrect assumption about church history.

Whether it's the history of the non canonical gospels, the seminal works like the Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost, oddities like the Prose Edda, or the spiritual beliefs of Tolkien and CS Lewis that bled into their mastersworks (Tho Lewis was certainly more blatant in that regard).

If you ever look for a topic I would love you to react to the channel "Sir Manatee" - How The First Austrian Republic was Dissolved. The history of Austria between WW1 and WW2 is fascinating and is completely overshadowed by the "Anschluss". But there was so much happening with Dollfuß for example, who ended the democracy, the Ständestaat, Austrofacism, the Austrian civil war etc.

I'm atheist, "true" atheist, that is to say no belief in supernatural or divine forces of any kind. Always been a bit interested in the topic of religion, and funnily enough, very interested whenever you talk about your views on religion and faith and how they mesh with your to-the-point and realpolitik view on history. I do think religion and faith are very important and fundemental to the human experience, and are in the end something that the society as a whole benefits from. Especially interested in early records of Christianity and how the religion very rapidly "swallowed up" such a great amount of peoples and societies. I think what I'm trying to say is I'm very excited for this series!

Arianism and Neo-Arianism flourished at times in the fourth century. Leaders like Athanasius of Alexandria, who survived being sent into exile, and the Cappadocians fought for Nicene orthodoxy for decades. They emerged victorious at the Council of Constantinople (AD 381). Jaroslav Pelikan's Christianity and Classical Culture is a fascinating read on the fourth century.

I'm so glad you chose to react to this topic. I think our secular schools do a tremendous disservice to their students by not teaching them anything about religion. Religion is so intertwined with the history of the world, it is difficult to understand world history without it. I went to Catholic school, and was taught the basics of the major religions of the world, and also the beliefs of the major protestant denominations. It's a fascinating subject, but it also helps give context for the unfolding of historical events.

Agreed. So many cultural and scientific advances originated as part of, or in service to, a major religion. I'm no longer religious but historically speaking, there's no way to separate religion from culture. Sometimes for the worse but also sometimes for the better. People have gone to war and killed in the name of their interpretation of religion, of course. On the other hand, so many well-known musicians throughout history once used their tremendous talent for their faith, and buildings like mosques, old churches, and synagogues are objectively some of the most beautiful buildings you'll often find in a given locale. Even given my own struggles with faith, I still don't agree with the notion that religions are inherently bad - they're just often a reflection of the human beings that practice them.

@@TheRedOctoberProject Couldn't have said it better myself. I agree 100%. I think most Americans would also. I myself am not particularly religious, but I do recognize the restraint religion puts on human tendency toward tyranny and despotism. I think most people could agree we should revere the 10 Commandments, and acknowledge that abiding by them would make for a better society.

Hi. I'm a member of the Oriental Orthodox Church. Specifically, I am a Jacobite which is a sub-sect that broke away from the Malankara Church to rejoin the Syriac Church. Thank you Chris for reviewing this video. Most don't know that Christianity flourished in other parts of the world before becoming mainstream in Europe, thus creating the myth that the Word of Christ was brought over to places like Egypt, Syria, and India through colonialism. You have my many thanks.

Useful charts is great, including their videos on religion. Two I'd recommend to you are: 1) His videos on the psychology of atheists, which was his PhD thesis. Probably the best objective analysis of the subject I've seen. Interestingly it feels like he really wanted to squash some hate he was getting where if he posted anything about history conflicting with religions (especially Christianity but also his own Jewish religion) people accused him of being an atheist, which is ironic of course. 2) HIs "Did Moses Exist?" video. Keeping in mind he himself is a Jew but he's willing to make content that puts aside his religions view on history and look at the broader non-religious material and where it conflicts with even some of his own religions practioners. I'll warn you that this might challenge some of your personal beliefs but I think he does a very fair analysis of the historicity of things like Moses and the Exodus and also gets into why things like Jesus are at least somewhat easier to narrow down potential historical versions vs something like the Exodus where our earliest surviving writings are so much later than the events in question. I totally get your approach to this as a Christian and looking at history through the strong biblical lens, though I will say you definitely take on a very different role here, more Christian than historian. Relying on the assumed accuracy of the modern biblical writings to a degree I don't see you rely on such narrow sources say when considering say Civil War history or other histories you've dug into on your channel. Which is no critique, just an observation. As a Christian I know your beliefs in those codified biblical sources are important (having been raised a fundamental evangelical Christian under a Southern Baptist pastor father I totally get it) in a way that doesn't translate say to Civil War history.

Fun fact: Nowhere in the Gospels does it state that Jesus was 33 when he died or that his ministry lasted only three years. They say he was "about thirty" when his ministry began which places him in the 25-35 range. The number is vague because nobody back then bothered to track the age and birthdays of people like carpenters. The average carpenter might only vaguely know their own age if asked. Likewise, we only see three different Passovers described in the Gospels, but that doesn't mean only three happened. His ministry could have lasted as long as a dozen years. So his age when he was crucified? Somewhere in the range of 28-47 years old. I find this interesting, as most pastors tend to cite age 33 as an undisputed fact.

  • @stephengray1344

47 sounds quite a stretch for the top end of the range. Matthew and Luke both seem to put Jesus' birth towards the end of Herof the Great's reign, and there isn't the space to move the crucifixion much later than 30 AD. So I'd say the top end is more late 30s than late 40s.

  • @shortlivedglory3314

@@stephengray1344 you're right, 47 is a stretch. It is however somewhat defensible if we move both his birth back to the earliest conceivable date and his crucifixion up to 38AD or so. I'm not saying I agree with those dates, mind you. I simply think that both extremes are academically defensible, though still both extreme and unlikely. I personally think he was probably within a year of age thirty (edit: when he began) and did his ministry for five or six years. I don't see a strong case for the more extreme dating. I merely accept them as valid.

Atheist here, but I'm not anti-theistic like some other atheists are. In fact, I'm a believer in pluralism. I didn't get degrees in Classics and Norse Language and Literature out of a hatred for mythology and religion. That being said, I'm a history guy, and you truly need to be informed about religions to study history. There's so much good history in religious texts with secondary confirmations.

Yes there is a lot of history but because of the claims of inerrancy it is often even harder to pars out than with other religious texts like Heraclitus or Livy who wrote their own biased histories and often included myth as fact. If people would read it in the same historical context as authors like these I would have less of a stomach ache with the Bible being cited as "history".

It's definitely one of the most interesting topics out there. There are a lot of videos on KZread discussing this subject. For me, I take the view that the stories of the bible are allegory and a mesh of different origins, but it's fine because this makes the concept of humans journeying to find God or something divine even more realistic than say revelations from the Angels or prophecy. Anyways, just two brief points: 1. From what i've read, the first temple was likely a project of Josiah, who did it for political purposes, rather than Solomon's time. The pantheon of gods in this area was more like a patron Diety for each clan, village or collection of villages. The early stories from Genesis till the Babylonian exodus likely was a mesh of literature from multiple origins combined with local tales. So, if people today somehow went back in time to this period, they probably couldn't recognized or identify a lot of what they read from the Bible. It really be alien to the abrahamic faiths today. 2. Religion and politics is heavily intertwined, and it's highly likely that ONE of the reasons for the fast spread of the religion was an attempt by the rulers to unify and have better control of the population. There are some folks who tend to cast Orthodoxy and Catholicism with idolatry because of their veneration of the saints among other things, but I see a lot of their art, practices, etc as a legacy of pre-Christian times from those areas. These "pagan" practices of the early Christian denominations are living artifacts of time. This is how the people of the past connected with each other, and it's just interesting to see how it survived.

As a big proponent of the ecumenical movement, I really appreciate the way VTH speaks of ecclesiological issues of schism, not villifying certain groups that hold to basic tenants but differ on tertiary issues. Some pastors and apologists go on campaigns of bitterness, demonizing fellow Christians who might not line up on every single doctrinal issue. This is my issue with people like Jeff Durbin, James White, and Doug Wilson, who all happen to be Reformed, but seem to lean into hyper-Calvinism (meaning that if someone isn't a five-point Calvinist, they are unregenerate and apostate, two terms that hyper-Calvinists use a lot.) I really admire the ecumenical efforts being made by some Catholics, Orthodox, Oriental, Church of the East, Lutheran, and Anglican christian leaders. Unless a denomination falls outside of the Trinitarian scope of the Nicene Creed, they shouldn't be treated as heretics, in my humble opinion. Can't wait for VTH to review the rest of the videos in this series. Granted I realize this is a channel focused on history and not theology, but as a pastor, Chris has an implicit bias in the way he handles theological issues, and I think those things that come up are handled in a respectful and sensitive manner. Props to him.

Interesting detail - you mention one holy catholic church (meaning universal in this context) but the Nicene Creed includes the word "apostolic" which is typically used to denote the appointment of Peter as leader and eventual pilot of the Papacy. It's a bit funny that of "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic," the most Catholic portion of that isn't the one you'd think.
