Since we are giving our ages away, I'm a half century myself. Bands don't continue for 40 years so I can keep reliving my youth. They evolve. Remember the point? We don't want to be like these dinosaurs. How often do you go to goth clubs daddy? Don't become the dinosaur. It's still pure, dark and beautiful. I hope you can come to appreciate it.

I used to listen to the old Christian Death. (both Rozz and Valor, even the Lover of Sin). Now it feels like this band has changed a lot... I might not like all of these new songs, but I'm truly glad to see that they are still doing well. They are beautiful.

I dunno, its good, I will say that, I just cannot get past my own brain and what it has in memories as Christian Death. I'm 52 and grew up on Christian Death, Alien Sex fiend, Skinny Puppy, 45 grave, Specimen etc etc etc. My brother got me into a Christian Death show when I was 12 (no my parents did not know) and those memories are kind of stuck. I am thrilled you are keeping it alive with new releases, just not hitting me with that emotional connection. Yes yes this is the internet and my opinion matters not, just my thoughts.

I'm 51, been dedicated to making gothic metal since 1985 when I started playing bass for that purpose, after being inspired by the performance of Nasty by The Damned on The Young Ones Halloween episode. Everything changes. A lot of gothic rock and horror punk acts started going gothic metal around that time: Christian Death, The Cult, The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Glenn Danzig, etc. Some gothic rock acts went the industrial metal route, like Ministry. Some gothic rock bands went the shoegaze route. A lot of gothic metal bands rebranded their music nu metal in the 90's to get record deals; some of us refused to rebrand as nu metal and walked away from deals. Shit happens. We all got caught up in some weird morphic field effect and all of that music + grunge was the product of it. We're all proud of what we did because we answered the call of the spirit of that age, each in our own way. Some of us still are. Each of my albums reflects on the spirit of the age when I composed it: my experience of that time and place. My point is that it's all music. Flavors change. One member leaves a band, and if the band goes on, the flavor changes as the times change. You gotta appreciate each incarnation for what it is, not what it once was. I had a concert promo video these guys made in the late 80's when DeMone was still in the band; I was impressed. It was very much gothic metal. It wasn't the Christian Death I knew from Only Theater of Pain, but it's the direction I was moving in and it inspired me, so I embraced it for what it was. I don't know that you could call what they're doing now gothic metal or if they still identify their music that way, but I still listen to it for what it is in the present moment and I appreciate it. Rozz put Valor in a fucked up position and he made the most out of it. I don't try to measure it according to some criteria established by the people who came before. I try to enjoy things for what they are and not what they could have been. There's no time in this life for shoulda, coulda, woulda; there's just what is in the ever-changing present, and we have to live with that. With that thought, I leave you with a taste of my own work: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oIB4u5Wxp7TNlbA.html Enjoy it, don't enjoy it, but don't compare it. Take it for what it is.

@@BatEatsMoth : Deadsy emerged in the latter half of the 90's and I immediately identified their sound as 80's goth or a type of dark wave style, but it's true that they were grouped together with 'nu-metal' acts that sounded nothing like them and they did get the commercial airplay and attention.

I always just listen to very early Christian death and never listen to anything after, I didn't even realize that they were still going (yes I know about all the band changes and stuff that happened decades ago), so decided to check out the newest stuff. This is surprisingly not extremely different the early stuff, I was expecting an entirely different genre by now, and it's actually a really good song (I can't say I was expecting anything good or a female singer either). I'm gonna have to check all those decades of Christian Death that I missed.

@@megmcguigan3857 Meg, you are almost correct. As I understand it, Rozz actually flew back to the USA alone in 1984, leaving the others basically stranded in Paris. "Ashes" was then recorded in 1985 in California, since Rozz didn't want to fly back to Wales to Rockfield Studios in Monmouth. He left on the eve of the 1985 tour of Europe, before the band were due to depart for Italy.

@@Albrecht777 Thanks for the correction, I get confused by all of it sometimes. It still stands that he left the band and wasn't forced out.

@@megmcguigan3857 Indeed, and no problem. Actually, as much as the legacy of the past is to be respected, it can sadly distract from the most important thing here, which is how wonderfully moving and brilliant this song is!
