Foo Fighters "color" guitarist details the stompboxes that help his tone glow and pop in the band's guitar-dense mix.
Following Foo Fighter’s recent Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at L.A.’s Kia Forum to honor their dearly departed drummer, Shiflett carved out some precious time and invited PG’s Chris Kies to the Foo’s HQ, Studio 606. The laidback conversation covered his essential live guitars (including a not-so-golden ’57 Les Paul and a few gracious gifts from Grohl), some custom Friedmans, and a pair of unusual AC30 stacks that only he and Sir Paul have … and all his pedals that sting, sparkle, shimmer, and sizzle.

Easily one of the most underrated guitar players of our time. Dude is a monster.
Bless this man. He is apart of the biggest band of this era and so down to earth.

I met him on the street in austin during ACL fest last year- dude, he was the coolest. No entourage, stopped when I recognized him, legit chatted for a minute, then went on his way waving goodbye like an old friend. Completely regular guy.
Chris seems like a real down to earth guy. Underrated player too.
Chris is such a down to earth, chilled, fun/funny, cool guy. Would kill to hang out with him tbh. Amazing guitarist too. very under appreciated.
It always amazes me what professional guitar players have on their boards. I always expect these uber expensive rare old pedals, and there are some of those, but most are just right off the shelf standard pedals. Always makes me feel better about my pedalboard. :)

Yeah, you'll find that dudes who are rock music first (as opposed to ego, drugs etc) just play with whatever they can get their hands on.

They don’t take expensive/rare things on tour
I really like his solo country material. Saw him opening up for Blackberry Smoke a few years back and he was great. I love the fact that he played for years without pedals so he learned the right way getting all the sound out from his hands to the guitar and amp. Now he is using the pedals to meet the needs of the songs.
When I hear Foo Fighters music I never notice effects... I'll have to listen for it more
As an amateur picker this is awesome seeing under the hood stuff & cool how sometimes it's not always over tweaking everything, it's still pretty basic. Foo Fighters is an awesome rock machine with like 50 good songs & they bring it RIP Taylor

The longer you will play the more you will realize that the majority of the sound comes from the player
HOLD ON! Did we just find someone who uses the FLERB setting on the HolyGrail??!?
That mystery box at 8:35 is a Palmer PLI05, it’s a dual channel line isolation box. 👌🏻👌🏻
Really fun to see this! Chris is a really good guitarist and seems to be a really nice guy.
Cool. Thank you for the peak behind the stage. I can’t imagine a world without Fighters of Foo.
Holly Smokes that's a pedal board ! Love It 🤘🎸🎩
Awesome setup, really loved seeing how he makes his tones.
Truly blown away how nice Chris is! Great video!
Class act. Dudes so down to earth.
He got a ace sound.
Seems like he could use a switcher with midi, so he can make a set list and switch to each song and have all his delay settings change as well as have switches setup to engage multiple pedals for a solo or whatever is needed.

agreed, really weird that he hasnt already switched to pedals in a rack and a RJM Mastermind like most others in his "size category". But since this is a year old by now, theres a good chance hes working on a MIDI switcher rig
Wow awesome setup ! Sweet VOX stacks and awesome pedalboard !
Ha ha, that's our PLI 05 Line Isolation Box at 8:38 Chris! And your tech’s right, you do indeed need it with this setup, even if you might not know exactly why 😉 Happy to show you exactly why if you’re ever in town or if you’re at the NAMM Show in April! Cheers for another great Rig Rundown!
I’m sure nobody will brag about their own gear in this comment section. Everyone will instead talk about this video without comparing it to their own giant board

Well, I was just gonna talk about how I stack my overdrives since I have so many. …..I stack them vertically so I can fit more on my board (…rim-shot goes here…).
Yeah the tape saturation on the DECO is so awesome !!!
Foo is foo!
So cool that he mentioned the song Aurora. It’s one of my favorite Foo’s song yet I would expect them to never play it live
Great video, thanks 👍
Damn! Owen Wilson
I became a fan of Chris Shiflett today. awesome. Now i'll never listen to the Foos quite the same.
It’s amazing a lot of the 2000s output for the Foos live/in studio Shifty didn’t have pedals or a board at the start as big as that one
He sounds like Pete Thorn.
I love that he has two timelines and the reason they’re different colors is depending on the timeframe they were made
As long as I don’t have to carry it around 😄
I can't afford patch cables 😭
Tom Morello should've been using this preset delay thing years ago (if possible).. Like a Stone was almost always a nightmare with the delay out of tempo when played live.
Great conversation. Love to sit down with Chris and talk gear over a beer.

You ever check his podcast “Walking the Floor”?
I'm learning about skateboarding and I've become such a guitar snob now due to respective pro sarcasm, this video is like in south park when Cartman shows starvin Marvin an American buffet 😋
When do we get Duke Levine, the king of tone?
Needs more pedals
Which on off pedals are u useing on your board in a r ou w in the front? Any one know ? Think I like that set up if you can someone let me know thanks a bunch 🎸🎀🎸
Anyone knows what cables he’s using on the pedals????
The size of this pedalboard is not that bad, isn't it? For a professional guitarist, I even find this pedalboard on the small side.

Its really not that many pedals if you look closely. Its the routing, power and utility stuff that ends up making a board massive

His pedal board is not that large. I’m not a gigging musician (at least not now) and my board is double this size.
@noname-ng6sj
Жыл бұрын
..and that explains why you're not a gigging musician. You're spending time you could spend getting your feet wet on worrying/obsessing about pedals. I used to be like you (probably 5x worse), then I just got an amp I liked, 2 years later I was doing everything I wanted and 10 years after that I started getting into pedals again. When you're stuck in phase 1, pedals do nothing but hurt you.

@@noname-ng6sj you’re not wrong, but not exactly correct either, somewhat. Life happens and you have to do whatever to make ends meet and/or take care of priorities. When playing shows, I had a fairly Spartan setup; one amp and maybe 7 pedals, including a tuner. I totally understand the “less is more“ approach. But in my own home, more is more! I do have a few boards going through different signals, so the hiss/hum is not bad at all. I’m sure you’re well aware, but power supplies make or break a rig; no one should cheap out on those. My point is, anyone in a band as big as the Foos, and the number of albums/sounds they’ve had over the years, I think I counted 14 pedals on Chris’ board. Not too bad for a band that big with basically an unlimited budget. Side note, and not to name drop - I had the pleasure of being a PA at a Foos show in LA not long ago. Every single member - Dave, Chris, Nate, Pat, and Taylor (RIP), were perfect gentlemen and the coolest group of guys. Again, it’s not to brag, but to spread the word of how awesome these guys are. Their rider was simply a few buckets of KFC, a few cases of Coors Light, and one bottle of Jaegermeister. That’s it.
I have the exotic wah. I barely use it. Might trade for a cheap wah and a few other pedals as they are worth a lot and it's like new. I need a ds1 or turbo and and klon style. I'd even trade straight up for a prs horse meat.
Tight sounding amp. I need a big muffn guess
It needs to be the same every night? That is the opposite of rock ‘n’ roll, and the opposite of jazz and the opposite of improvisation.

Get a life
I think pedalboards like that, shows a little of "Addiction" to... color, cables, knobs...? Get a Helix, even a little Hotone Ampero! You don't even need an amp!! (Who uses amps anyways this days?) Besides, after all that crap, your guitar sound is NOT MORE your guitar sound! Now you can play a Keyboard Bro!
