The Hamlin incident brought me here. In 1972 I was 15 yr old playing ice hockey. I got hit in the chest with a puck slap shot identical to Pronger. I felt the sting, took a couple strides towards the bench and collapsed. Fortunately the other teams coach was a medical doctor and a players father was trained in CPR. They began immediately working on me and saved my life. I am so grateful, Amazingly, I received an email yesterday from the doctor who is now 93. He tracked me down after all these years. He recalls everything about that event as do I. The fatality rate in that era was 90%. I beat the odds and am so grateful. So many years have passed and I can say for me ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’. 1:25 1:25

This is a thing called "commotio cordis", literally "heart commotion" - it happens when someone takes a blow to the chest in the split second when the heart is resetting between beats. It is almost always fatal. The heart simply stops beating and the victim just keels over - there is no chest pain or distress, just boom, down you go. Pronger was extremely lucky to survive.
