Chris Pratt REACTS to ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Criticism over Accents (Exclusive)
Ойын-сауық
Chris Pratt and Charlie Day talk to “Extra’s” Jenn Lahmers about voicing Mario and Luigi in “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which is inspired by the iconic Nintendo game. They address some fan criticism about the voice accents and also dish on their sons being big Nintendo fans. Chris also teases what to expect from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which he calls “really moving.” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” hits theaters April 5.

Chris Pratt actually gave a really thoughtful and self-aware response to that question. Because a lot of people have been rightfully skeptical about a different voice cast full of big names. While you can tell he was careful with his words, the fact that he is able to address that tells me he’s likely not being phony and just trying to sell people something.

Exactly what I was thinking. I was being pretty…cautiously optimistic about the movie up until now, and that is largely in part to how they unveiled the movie and the online discourse surrounding it. But seeing this, I feel convinced that Chris Pratt actually believes in this movie on its own merits, not just because he has to to help promote it. They still pay respects to Charles since they plan on giving him a mystery role in this movie, if they really didn’t care they would’ve left him out entirely. Charles himself even supports Chris Pratt as Mario in this movie. Even then Charles wasn’t the first voice for Mario, Mario’s had many other voices before then and while Charles did take over the role for a few decades it was only inevitable for someone else to take a shot at the voice.

The reason me and many others were so harsh is Nintendo themselves treat Mario as seriously as Disney treats Mickey Mouse with how they restrict Charles Martinet, yet Chris Pratt ( *AT FIRST* I will clarify) was seemingly allowed to just phone it in after all their protectiveness of the character, it made no sense if they wanted to treat Mario that seriously with Charles yet let any celebrity do a bog standard voice. Even more baffling was that while Chris Pratt clearly improved over time, no one else needed any improvement, they were already very good for their roles. Chris Pratt is spot on here. I really enjoyed it, and I'm 45 years old: watched it with my son yesterday. I think if you liked the games, you can really appreciate what they have done here. So, given I grew up playing Mario in the 80s and 90s, and have enjoyed it with my kids growing up since, there's an instant parent/child bond thing going on here. You can see, no feel, a lot of love has been put into it from all involved. And the production values(I read one review calling it a lazy cash in animation), as a 3D animation, really are second to none - it looks absolutely amazing visually. If you're looking for hidden meaning, parallels to real life issues, or emotional plot twists, like you find in some PIXAR animations - you'll be disappointed. It is a very simple plot, and it's happy with that. But lazy it is most definitely not. So much love has gone into it. It's an enjoyable kids film (they don't always need the above criteria to satisfy old critics!) that pays homage to it's source material incredibly well. You can tell Nintendo are beaming with pride over this. And so they should be.
If they did do an Italian accent tho, people would call them racist sooo...

Ben Schwartz - Sonic and Chris Pratt - Mario, best casting choices they could ever offer. I got to say, they definitely gave new energy to these characters. They should be proud.
I think people misunderstand something about Chris's voice acting greatly. With this movie, they are bringing back the idea of Mario being from Brooklyn from the 80's. Much of the earlier Mario media took this as Canon and in the instances Mario had voicing pre-Martinet it was typically a gruff American accent with some possible Italian hints or full Brooklyn dialect. With this film, they are bringing back that voice along with the location. Chris is doing the Brooklyn Mario that many of the more involved Mario fans (or older ones) are familiar with. I grew up with much of that media so its been pretty obvious to me the whole time and to be frank I'm surprised that I seem to be the only one
Chris Pratts thought out response just helped me lock it in that he is not phoning it in and now, I know he’ll be great as Mario I also like how this interview addresses the other upcoming movies Charlie and Chris are doing!

That was absolutely a blanket response he prepared ahead of time for any criticism. He didn't actually say anything about the accents. I was hoping he'd go into it with something specific, like why they chose that accent, or reference the accent Bob Hoskins used or the old cartoon series
I think Chris Pratt is the only person who loves the idea of doing Mario. If you watch the documentary of other actors who have voiced or played the character over the years, especially Charles, you might noticed something interesting. Those other past actors never heard of or didn't want to be Mario when they got the part. Captain Lou Albano was almost passed on playing the character. Not only because he never heard of the video game franchise before but also because he never wanted to shave his iconic beard, with a rubber band in it & wear a fake mustache in the show. When Bob Hoskins was in set for a live action Mario movie, he had no idea that it was based on a video game. He never heard of Mario before so he was fully explained about it from his grandson. And then there's Charles Martinet. He's only accepted for the role probably just because he wanted one. His only issue is, he didn't know anything about video games other then squares hitting dots.
I think that's the best response he could have gave. No matter how the movie ends up being, I never blamed them for saying yes when offered the roles. I would have said yes too. Anyone would have.
Looking forward to this. Love Chris’s response and you can tell he genuinely cares and tried his hardest in this role.
I don't have a problem with the lack of an Italian accent. I just feel like Prat doesn't try very hard in the role in the first place. His monologue before the first trailer made me doubt how genuine his enthusiasm is ever since.

I’m glad Chris Pratt gave a genuine good response. Respect to him for that. Also I never saw how good they both look as a duo irl
In my opinion about the accent, the movie is a different adaptation. They must be discussing about the accent in the early stages of their meetings already. Mario in the game don't talk much. If he will talk a lot in the movie with his original voice, it would be super weird, because its more cartoonish. If Shigeru-san, the creator himself give the green light, I'M IN

In the far beginning before the trailers ever came I really kinda figured they would use Brooklyn type of voices but really I thinking how they can reestablish to some of fans and people that brooklyn is where the bros came since this persona of the characters were only established in the old cartoons of the late 80s and early 90s & in the 93 movie that kept Nintendo away from cinema adaptations
I too wasn't a fan of the voices but the movie itself made up for it💯 "Peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches......"
that was a really passionate and genuine response. i feel much more trust in his performance now.
Honestly Chris prats voice causing memes was honestly great accidental marketing. The questions of his voice and the memes have created such great desire to se e the movie. It’s great
I like Chris Pratt’s Mario voice. He could even work in the games if Nintendo wanted to give the Mario games more dialogue. Not saying I hate Charles Martinet’s voice, but to give the Mario games more story Chris Pratt would work!

I honestly kind of like the voices chosen for the movie, personally. Yes, they aren't to the T the voices, or as Italian, but I probably wouldn't take it as seriously anyway if it was Mario's super high voice speaking the whole movie. That's just me, but I'm pretty hyped for the movie, and I especially do like Luigi's voice and Bowser's. Honestly seems like a great movie coming out, can't wait to see it!
Two family men, providing for their kids through this interview. Love it. 😂
Chris Pratt here actually reassures me that this movie will be amazing
Very good response. He wasn’t a baby about it and actually tried to understand the criticism. The opposite of insecure. I thought Pratt was completely fine though I think he was right I’m saying you should see the movie first
Totally agree with Chris Pratt! This film truly is nostalgia at it's finest. It really resonates with fans who grew up with the video games as well as the TV show such as my husband and myself! Our kids have gotten into the original TV show as well as the original games and newer ones; and they loved the movie! All around a great family friendly film; fun for the whole family!

Chris Pratt doing a great job promoting this movie, if I had any doubts he would have erased them for me
Chris Pratts voice has grown on me. It sounds like a mix between his voice in the game and the super show.
Just keep loving this movie more and more Seen it 3 times
Charlie day just said the movie comes out May 12th 2:58 even though it’s April 5th? Maybe he switch up the release date of the movie with the release date of Tears of the kingdom ( which is on May 12th)😅

Chris was the only VA I had doubts, the other were perfect considering the personality of the characters, but Chris actually was better than I expected, in some points I forgot it was actually CHRIS PRATT, he and Charlie are not Charles Martinet who is a legend, but they did a pretty good job.
I am absolutely sure that if they did accents for the Mario brothers, people would still would’ve been mad and say that that was racist of them to do.

Chris Pratt put it very well. They did an amazing job of putting little easter eggs and references to TONS of old Mario material everywhere in the movie. I absolutely loved the movie

I was a little skeptical about Chris’s Pratt at voicing Mario but tbh he killed that shit 1000%, will probably be watching again just cause of my absolute love for the Mario universe

Great movie! As someone who grew up playing Super Mario on the NES, SNES and the N64, I had a blast watching this! So many easter eggs and call backs to the various games and gaming culture as a whole!
Honestly, I think Chris pulled around, I was skeptical of the trailers and the movie provided a reasonable explanation about the accents. And he actually addressed and even sympathized with the concern about bad Voice Acting for iconic characters.
People need to understand that Mario and Luigi used to speak normally with Brooklyn accents back in the 80s and 90s, since they’re canonically from Brooklyn, New York, which is why they casted Chris Pratt and Charlie Day to voice them. It’s like people forgot about the old 80s cartoon show, “Super Mario Bros. Super Show.” Italian-American WWE wrestler, Captain Lou Albano, was the OG Mario. Anyway, if they go with the voices from the games, I feel like it’s not gonna fit; it would be kinda weird and annoying. Video games and movies are two totally different things; a movie needs to have dialogue.
I think Chris will deliver an excellent job, but Raphael Rossato's voice will be much more faithful 🇧🇷🇧🇷

Chris Pratt is such a great guy and he really explained why his voice wasn't that Italian and hell in the movie he was really good
Fans saw one trailer on October 6 2022 then heard two and I repeat, TWO VOICE LINES from Chris Pratt voicing Mario and fans immediately went 🤬🤬. Now everyone saying the movie is a masterpiece this masterpiece that as if they weren’t just hating on Chris Pratt 6 months ago. The switch up is so crazy it’s funny. Chris Pratt fr deserves an apology for all the undeserved hate he’s received from only 2 voice lines and acting like 1 trailer ruined the whole movie

"so what's up with the accent, Chris?" "Ahh uhh, hey the movie's really good you should watch it twice!" nice sidestep, but he said a lot of things I'm sure lots of people wanted to hear.
Honestly Chris Pratt seems like a nice guy.
What I don't get is why is people freaking out that Mario and Luigi speaking Italian, um did you not see Super Mario Bros Super Show they used a Brooklyn accent. Also people freak out about Christ Pratt voicing Mario, but no one freaked out Death Rogue who voiced Donkey Kong since he doesn't really talk or better yet no one freaked out when it was announced Ryan Reynolds is voicing Pikachu. I am not saying this to hate but with the haters logic they are kinda being hypocrites, and in all honesty these people have no say. Remember people like them did the same thing With Birds of Prey and the Sonic Movie. So unless haters want to kill a movies chances over a film then don't talke about it go watch another movie and let the people who are curious who want to see it go see it, and the. Judge the movie after it is done.
