Ring of Honor (ROH) is a professional wrestling promotion recently acquired by Tony Khan, CEO of AEW, Chief Football Strategy Officer of the Jacksonville Jaguars and GM/Sporting Director of Fulham F.C. The acquisition, which was completed through an entity that is wholly-owned by Tony Khan, included ROH’s extensive video library dating back to 2002, brand assets, intellectual property, production equipment and more.
With more than 20 years of rich wrestling history, ROH has launched the careers of numerous AEW stars, including CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Hangman Page, Dr. Britt Baker, Adam Cole, Samoa Joe, among others. Additional members of the AEW roster have made their mark in ROH, including the late Brodie Lee, The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson), Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, Scorpio Sky, ReDragon (Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly), Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta), Jay Lethal, Christopher Daniels, Matt Sydal, Mercedes Martinez, Serena Deeb, Frankie Kazarian, Keith Lee, Eddie Kingston, Evil Uno, QT Marshall, Danhausen, Lance Archer, Griff Garrison, Thunder Rosa, Wheeler Yuta, Luchasaurus, Orange Cassidy, Ethan Page, Austin Gunn, PAC, Kip Sabian, John Silver, Alex Reynolds, Jerry Lynn, BJ Whitmer, Ace Steel and Sonjay Dutt.
ROH’s current list of champions includes ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli, ROH World Television Champion Samoa Joe, ROH Pure Champion Wheeler Yuta, ROH World Tag Team Champions FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) and ROH Women’s World Champion Mercedes Martinez. Tony Khan’s purchase of ROH signifies a new chapter in the future of professional wrestling as AEW’s meteoric rise continues to draw the youngest-skewing wrestling audience on television.

    The start of the CZW vs. ROH feud. Still the best invasion storyline I've ever seen in wrestling. And Danielson was such a great douchebag heel-champion. He started this war by antagonising Hero and CZW, and then simply abandoned the whole conflict and left it to the rest of ROH to deal with the fallout, while he concentrated on his title reign.

    Not only that he actually turned on ROH in the Cage of Death match so he could essentially soften up Samoa Joe for a future title match lol

    @@stoneharper7038 Gotta love selfish asshole-Danielson. His best gimmick throughout his ROH-run. He didn't give a shit about babyfaces or heels, or ROH or CZW. All he cared about was that he was the Best Wrestler in the World and nobody could prove him wrong. And every victory just made him more unbearable, especially when he pinned Colt Cabana in under 5 minutes.

    @@Wurzelknecht I remember being a huge wwe blind mark fanboy around this time😂. I was hearing about Danielson and was ready to call him overrated along with Roh as a company. Then I looked up the much hyped match with Nigel at Roh unified and and instantly thought it was one of the top 5 matches I ever seen and Bryan was the best in the world and one of the top 5 best wrestlers I ever saw up to that point(been a fan since 92). After the train wreck that was December to Dismember being I was also a huge ECW and RVD fan I quit watching WWE and was hooked to ROH from 06-08 before I stopped watching wrestling period due to personal reasons. ROH during that time was some of the most amazing stuff I ever seen from a company. I had like 100 DVDs and the feud with CZW was everything I hoped the WWE/WCW invasion feud would be and a shit ton more. Those were great times!!!

  • @Wurzelknecht

    Yeah it's what made the ROH World title so prestigious to me. They had like 20-30 shows a year back when they had no TV deal, and almost every show had a world title match. Sure, some challengers were less likely to beat the Champ than others, but a good title defense with a clean finish even against a filler challenger just made the Champ look strong and the title important, because not any random dude could just win it, and when a title DID change hands, it was a huge deal.

    What? Titles were never defended that much in ROH pre TV. They had at most like 2 events a month. Titles are defended all the time on house shows

  • @Wurzelknecht

    @Wurzelknecht

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@nohbuddy1 Danielson had over 30 title defenses in 2006 alone. So yeah, the title was defended a lot. Any number higher than 12 is already a lot. Even CM Punk who was only champ for like a month had 5 title defenses in that time. And house shows don't count, as they're not filmed. They haven't counted since at least the mid-90s when they finally realised that having title changes that nobody but the arena audience can watch is a stupid business decision.

    It was interesting to learn that Bryan, in his book, described this match as a "biggest failure as ROH champion", because they went with a technical match l, which made people less and less involved in the match, because they were super hot about CZW and ROH rivalry and wanted a brutal brawl.

    Everything came together. The wrestlers of course. But the fans, the refs, the camera angles, the lighting, even the commentator’s audio setup, all came together to make ROH great. Production that made it enjoyable to watch, yet not so polished that it felt sanitised and mainstream.
