Chris Hayes: Why campus protests are 'the easier debate'

Chris Hayes: It's easier to argue about what college kids are doing than to confront the human misery and destruction that's happening in the actual conflict which is, of course, the source of these protests.

This is the first sane coverage I've heard on the issue. 'How' tens of thousands of people choose protest is not as important as 'why' tens of thousands of people are choosing to protest. Basic exclusionary screens against companies or individual of countries that commit human rights abuses are a common implementation of portfolio guidelines in this decade. You cannot buy Russian securities. Individuals linked to Russia were forced to sell their stakes in businesses. It doesn't matter if Russia claims that they are battling an anti-Semitic authoritarian regime. What matters are the ruined cities, indiscriminate attacks on civilians, displacement of the local populace, and mass graves. I personally think schools, hospital, and religious organizations probably shouldn't hold ownership in companies that generate their revenues from weapons. I thought that was common sense, and I am a bit shocked to see that these endowments were not already divested from those firms. ALL Israeli businesses is a different matter. I think the documented large flows into investments like Lockeed Martin in November is more concerning and morally reprehensible than schools having equity in SodaStream.

I served in the first Gulf War. At the time, I was pretty thoroughly indoctrinated. It wasn't until I got home and learned the truth that we were not told that I turned my face toward peace. Since then, I have been skeptical of any divisive rhetoric on war whether for or against. The situation in Israel/Palestine is about as divisive as it gets. In my frame, I cannot be 100% on one side or the other, but it obviously must stop. Menachim Begin was able to make peace with Yasser Arafat in the late 1970s, and things were calmed down for a while. Let's try that again. If it has to be revisited every few years, let's commit to doing that.

"The songs of slaves represent the sorrows of his heart; and he is relieved by then, only as an aching heart is relieves by its tears." ~ Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), American orator, writer, editor, and abolitionist leader. How moving to hear the protesters remembered the songs 🎵 of long ago and sang them soulfully and quite well. Non-violent, peaceful protests. 🕊

The two state solution was dashed when Yitzhak Rabin was prime minister of Israel. He was assassinated by a member of a right wing faction of a political party that the current Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was a leader of. It occurred after the Oslo accords in which a pathway for peace, was formed, with the recognition of a two state solution.

After he was murdered the Housing Ministry began flooding colonists onto the very territory that was to be the State of Palestine. Think of that. Israel was willing to murder its own Prime Minister to prevent Palestinians, who had recognized Israel, from having a state of their own.

Freedom of speech is what makes America unique. You don't have to agree with the speech, but it is American to support that right. Suddenly, politicians and most of the media became censorship fascists.

No, only the democrats will be toast. The Republicans are united as are the red states in their hatred of anyone who is left of center. There is a lot more of them then there are of leftists. I’m a moderate firmer republican, and I’m voting for Biden because Trump has done very scary plans for the country (specifically leftists and Muslims). I’m hearing from other moderates and never trumpers that thinking of sitting this election out so Trump will win, so you all will learn a lesson. Cutting off your nose despite your face type attitude. That’s how big their hatred is for the left in this country. Right now the left is preaching to the choir, and bringing in non left people into what they want to protest.
