    AND, perhaps more significantly, he's prepared to back up his attitude and statements, with reasons and even the principles from which he makes a judgement. Some (many?) auto journos - and _sometimes_ Jack Rix is amongst them - very easily falling in line with the hype, and are a bit too easily enthused by yet another product, soundbite, media release, acceleration time. 🤷🏼‍♂️😒

    I think that the "party piece" moving forward may have been discovered by Ariel. The extenders. Engines that produce power to extend range/recharge the battery. I mean Ariel just decided to strap a turbine engine but I could see halving the battery in many of these cars and adding a small generator and tank to either double you range or enter fun mode. It wouldn't be needed for day to day driving so it could skirt some of the laws and bring back some pop.IT isn't a gas powered car... it is an electric car with a gas generator. Big difference.

  • @skierpage

    @skierpage

    Жыл бұрын

    Range extenders have been tried, like the BMW i3. The problem is if the car is moving, the engine has to propel the car as well as recharge a depleted battery, and that can't be done with acceptable performance by a small range extender. To quote another commenter @ams6745, the Ariel Hipercar prototype's "47 hp range extender seems probably smaller than desirable. That is only 33 KW, and running at 75 mph at 350 wh/mi (might be worse with that aero...) requires 26 KW. Legitimately not enough power to contribute meaningfully to recharge at hwy speeds" If you make the engine powerful enough to move the car, you've just built another plug-in hybrid, and despite the benefits, they are comprehensively outsold by pure BEVs in every market.

    @@skierpage So the math currently going on with a vehicle like the Ford Lightening is 1 KW/ Mile at 70 MpH while towing. on a vehicle already that size how big of a generator is needed to do nothing but charge the battery to up the millage to an acceptable range? NO it does not need to power the wheels directly, the engine only needs to be a generator which could minimize size and cost and make more efficient. don't get me wrong, there is an issue on when it triggers and how much it can power/recharge the battery and things like that, but there is also an incentive for it as well. Electric motors are more efficient per watt of power that gas engines are thermally are and converting it to the wheels. The possibility to increase efficiency by focusing on what each system does most efficiently is something to put time into.

  • @skierpage

    @skierpage

    Жыл бұрын

    @@nelspaulson3099 so in that case the generator needs to produce 70 kW (93 horsepower) plus efficiency losses just to keep the vehicle moving down the highway, so there's little excess available to charge the battery. A small range extender can move the vehicle or recharge the battery, but it's hard to do both, as I wrote. It works better if you're stopping and starting in the city, but then charging while parked is practical. Nissan's e-Power drivetrain sounds like what you're proposing: optimize the engine to be a generator for a motor, avoiding Toyota/Ford/Honda/Volt's efficient but complicated hybrid transmission to send a blend of motor and engine power to the wheels. But it's not successful and Nissan has never put it in a plug-in car. Many novel small generators for electric cars have been proposed including motorcycle engines, rotary engines, and turbines; none have made it to market.

    @@skierpage we may have slightly different definitions of recharging here. It has gone to market on some very small boutique levels but nothing serious by a big manufacturer. Again it would come down to how the laws are written. That kind of extender might skirt the EV laws coming into effect over the next decade. And you do not needed it to fully power the drivetrain, just assist to extend the battery. There are probably a dozen ways to do it and it would probably depend on what type of vehicle(sports car, sedan, truck, etc ) as to what works best.

    Rimac played it well to be the first on the market. They'll sell all their units, and they'll have made their money on the Nevera project. But what happens to the other companies? What can they do to make their electric hypercar different? The sound of the engine isn't there. The cylinder count or displacement isn't there. The weight distribution isn't there. The knife's edge driving experience like the Carrera GT isn't there. The manual gearbox isn't there. I don't know how the hypercar can survive since they're currently unpleasant to give full beans, and it's pointless adding any more beans to the pot because it will be even more unpleasant.

    Is there really that much difference between the various combustion-engined supercars? Fossil fuel blows up, car leaps forward. Whatever. There will always be a small market for expensive limited edition cars simply to fill the spaces in the ultra-rich's 20-car garages. What's more interesting is what the incredible performance of $120,000 Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire have done to more affordable sports cars. Where is the nimble lighter-weight EV sports car that people in comments keep saying they want? I assume sports car manufacturers are finding it hard to do better than a practical five-seater sedan.

    Electric cars need a bit of theatre too. In combustion engine cars it's that obnoxious explosion thing. Electric cars need space-age drama. I realized this when I saw the hydrogen Hyperion. I thought, this is it. Electric cars need to go sci-fi to have a personality. Call it silly, call it theatrical, call it artificial... And I will agree. But that's what you want if you miss the combustion engine spectacle.
