Chris Foss demystifying the hammered dulcimer │ Songbird Dulcimers

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How the tuning arrangement of the hammered dulcimer works, and how easy it is to learn and play by Chris Foss of Songbird Dulcimers. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email us at chris@songbirdhd.com.
The "Irish" tune Chris demonstrates here isn't really Irish, just in the style. It is "Missouri", a modern American fiddle tune but public domain.
We build a wide selection of hammered dulcimers here at Songbird Dulcimers. We also sell plenty of accessories and everything you'd need to begin your foray into the hammered dulcimer world.

Based on the crappy little beginner one I had as a child, I feel pretty confident in saying that it's kind of hard to play a dulcimer _wrong_ as long as you're not trying to pluck it with your fingers. Any random whack on the entire stringed surface sounds vaguely pleasing to the ear.

I just bought a 16/15 from songbird. Chris did phenomenal. First time ever trying one, and it isn't hard to pick up. Songbird did fantastic, highly recommend

@@Izaak. hello there! It is hard to tell from your description. Take a picture of your instrument and email it to chris@songbirdhd.com including your description. Or you could also ask in the Hammered Dulcimer Players group on Facebook. There are many knowledgeable players in that group and it is a good resource to try

You made it seem achievable to play the instrument and not so complicated . Which dulcimer are you playing in this particular video? What size and key? Thank you for your information.

Thank you so much! Very happy to hear this helped demystify the dulcimer for you :) In this video is an old model we don’t make anymore called the Woodthrush. The size is 16/15 (meaning 16 notes on the treble bridge and 15 on the bass bridge). We do sell a similar model that is 16/15 called the Phoebe. The main keys played on most dulcimers are C, G, D, A, and sometimes F (and their relative minors), though some dulcimers can also be tuned to other keys if desired (depending on the dulcimers’ sizes).

what is the best beginner dulcimer to start on please?

  • @songbirdhd

Great question! For adult beginners, we typically recommend purchasing a 13/12 Chickadee, a 16/15 Phoebe, or their chromatic counterparts that have more notes. We recommend these because they are less pricey than our other models. However, if you think you are definitely going to enjoy playing for years to come, you could invest in any of the other models as well :) www.songbirdhd.com Please let us know if you have any more questions!
