Chris Buck has been one of the most requested players for me to make a video on for this channel, so here we are!
In this video, I break down what I would consider to be the most noticeable characteristic of Chris’ lead playing style - grace notes performed with the use of bends and slides.
We’re going to take a look at four types of grace notes that you will often hear Chris inject into his wonderfully expressive licks and solos. I’ve broken these down into the following:
Ascending slides
Descending slides
Trill slides
Something I like to call the ‘index finger bend & slide’...
Towards the end of the video I’ll demonstrate and teach a Chris Buck inspired scale run that I wrote over the Buck & Evans track ‘Slow Train’. This scale run brings all of the grace notes taught in the video together.
Thank you to Chris for being cool with me making this video and providing me with the backing track for Slow Train!
The bonus content for this lesson - available exclusively to members of bulletproofguitarplayer.com - includes 9 exercises for practicing grace notes in your lead playing which will be very beneficial to those of you who are brand new to this.
I’ve also added a compilation video of all of the grace note examples in the KZread video and the scale run with TAB and notation added. Downloadable TAB files (Guitar Pro & PDF) are available for all of the above.
I have not added TAB for the solo in the intro as Chris teaches this solo on his KZread channel and I have linked that at the top of the description box.

One thing I’ve noticed with Chris Buck’s playing is that he plays a lot of slash style licks but instead of quick hammer ons and pull offs he does half step slides and it’s very unique.

I didn’t know Chris’ bend and slide using the index finger is a rare thing! When I learned this embellishment, I learned it from his videos so I just thought it’s the “standard way” of doing it 😂. I gotta say though, it’s one of his big money-maker technique and it just turns ears no matter the melodic passages he creates. Thanks for doing this lesson and explaining the terms as well!

Perfect, thank you. So easy to follow, so rich in content. I reckon all we need is your channel and Chris Buck's channel to have available all the knowledge we need for sensitive guitar. It then obviously remains to be seen whether we can utilise that knowledge. My only regret is that Chris doesn't have a strong Welsh accent - there would be a certain entertainment value hearing the two of you discussing the merits and demerits of phrygian progressions vs lydian progressions. Add a Georgie in the mix and we're ready for free-form jazz. Jokes aside, many thanks for an incredibly valuable lesson - and thanks to Chris for just being the amazing, self-deprecatory talent that he is.

Seriously, feels like Chris Buck started playing guitar in 2020, and 20 years later in 2021 he left me feeling like I should be wearing a special helmet from now on. I do feel he’s in the wrong band though, and if they love that dude, they need to force him towards the hall of fame he’ll be in one day by accepting he should be sharing the stage with legends.

The trill with the index finger is a step further than what BB King would do ,,, BB often would bend with his index finger & then go on with the lick ,, here the trill is added on & then you finish the lick.

@@RossCampbellGuitarist Fiesta Red may just be the best Fender color. I also like an aged Olympic White with a tortoise pickguard. However, I think Fiesta still wins. You might chuckle to know that I call this "Campbell's Tomato Soup Red."

Thank you! No - the content in the EXTRAS section (with the exception of Spicy Licks - Package 1) is exclusively available to those who have an active subscription to my website. It's 'patreon style' content, so I'm always adding new stuff there based on these free lessons. It's worth mentioning however, that you can cancel a subscription plan at any time - you're not locked into any sort of contract when you subscribe on a monthly or annual basis.
