In first grade, we had a classmate that was from the poorest family in the county, he had his nose broken in childhood, his family had no insurace or money to fix it. He was treated differently at school from the boys and he had few friends. At Christmas we drew names. He drew my name. Classmates commented semi insilting things, like you won't get anything but sticks and charcol or forget getting a present. It hurt my feeliings as if they had said it about me. I told my mom that evening about it all. She asked what are you going to think about this and do? I said, "Mama. I'm glad I'm the one he drew. Whatever he gets it will be wonderful. The party day arrived. He watched me open the small white box with tissue paper and a string bow. I opened it and there was a turtle shell four inch hair comb. I loved it, I still have it put away in a box still. It has traveled many miles. I thanked him so much for it and made sure he would see me having it throughout the year.
