Chordplay - The Chords Of The Police
Музыка
Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of The Police. It was about three years ago when I created 'The Chords Of Andy Summers' episode of Chordplay - which was shared by the official Andy Summers FB page last year - and since that time I've had a lot of requests to feature more of Andy's music and the music of The Police, so let's dive in!
This second installment centering on The Police's music revolves around the distinct reggae sound/influence heard in their music - especially during the early years. If you'd like to dive a little deeper into reggae guitar and this popular musical style, be sure to watch the 'Reggae Guitar Chords' episode on the LNL channel from a few years ago.
The chord-based song examples in this episode include hits such as 'Can't Stand Losing You,' 'So Lonely,' 'Man In A Suitcase,' 'The Bed's Too Big Without You,' 'Spirits In The Material World,' 'Roxanne,' and a look at the bridge section of 'Walking On The Moon,' which follows the intro/verse section that was featured in 'The Chords Of Andy Summers' episode from a few years ago.
Needless to say, if you're a fan of The Police, 1980s music, reggae music, or just a player searching for some new twists/turns using triads, partial chords, implied chords, and chord fragments - this lesson is totally for you!
Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Amazing that Andy was an old man by the time he joined the Police, having played in numerous 1960's acts.

Yeah, that's how I'd regarded him myself, being only around 10 back then and him already being an "old fart" in his mid 30's 😆 Both Sting and Copeland were close to 30 then too, though 🙂
Andy is an amazing guitarist that never seems to get near enough attention….
Well I guess it’s time to plug in the electric mistress and go to town!!!!!! Great call on Andy Summer!!!!!
That settles it practice guitar or go to gym after work. Seeing the notification of this video has helped me make up my mind. Thank you very much I'm know this video lesson will help a lot
Great video! I saw the Police Live concert video for the first time in 1995 and was completely blown away by what amazing musicians all three of them are.
Man, those old Police songs are so fantastic. I saw them two or three times and they never disappointed.
Some of the best chords ever!!!! Thanks, David. Careful with your tendons, everyone!
Always loved the chord work in The Police and Andy Summers, thanks for spreading the knowledge bud x
Great chord lesson. Every police song of the 80's is a masterpiece. Many thanks David 🙂🙂👌
Awesome, Brewster. I really wish Andy, Stewart and Sting would make another recording!

Would love to see this happen as well. Saw them on the reunion tour about a decade back and they were amazing live, but damn if they barely held it together for that tour. Those guys (primarily Sting and Copeland) just can't get along for any length of time.
Marvelous, thank you.
I got the complete Police remastered box set a few years back. So much great music… and instrumentation. Cool video.👍🥃🎸
I so like & appreciate what you do, how you do it, the in-the-room-with-you approach, all. Thanks! Wish you were my neighbor, this is next best thing.

Definitely!
Great video! 😃👍 Andy is *the* guitarist that had inspired me the most, in regards to sound and chord choice 😊 I remember being 10 and 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da' being a hit at the time and playing on the radio every morning while I was getting ready for school, and I just totally loooved the guitar parts in it and that twangey, chorused sound! 😁👍 I think those parts may actually be a Sting idea, though (just like 'Message In A Bottle'), if that scene in Stewart's movie 'Everyone Stares' with Sting and Andy working on them is anything to go by?! 🙂 And 'Zenyatta Mondatta' also was one of my very first LP's and one of several I'd learnt to play the drums to (AC/DC's 'Back In Black' was another) 😊
Yes ! Another good old 70's-80's guitar lesson in 2022. Thanks again Dave!
Power trio with one of the best rock drummers ,stu Copeland and the very very talented singer /song writer STING 😁
I remember when they came out I didnt like them. lol I was 14 and they were so different!
Thanks for another great lesson. You've got a very good ear, and I appreciate your extra care in getting these parts down as accurately as possible.
Great stuff Dave…all those tiny lead phrases at the end of “message in a bottle” are absolutely gold…Andy Summers is a brilliant guitarist who always played “for the song”….rock on my brother!!!!!
Great lesson Dave!! Always loved Andy's inventive and original style. Never a boring progression 👍🎸
Love it Dave. Thanks
I’m old enough to remember how popular they were back then…great lessons again 🎸
Thanks brother for the lesson 🎸👌
Great video. Good to hear you are back with the better sounding amp. Your videos have a vibe and it is part of it.
Good job!!
Great lesson as always Dave!!!
Great!!
You are building a great library, your lessons are world class..thank you..police is cool
Sure was glad to have friends who were into new wave etc, to open my ears to the different guitarists like Andy, while I was already deep into the rock & metal guys of the same era. Andy's talent is endless, and his use of chords, harmonics and effects are incredible, to say the least!
Awesome lesson.
Your video on the Police website?!!! That rules, David! Excellent!
Double thumbs up or more...👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was trying to send a direct message but I couldn't find out how with the new KZread format, but I greatly appreciate everything you do as does everyone. What I wanted to ask was if you could do any Peter Green or Roy Buchanan or Danny Kirwan or Alvin Lee lessons. Your ear to match tone and even lick subtleness is immaculate.
i like his work with Fripp also : )
Nicely done I didn't see the police but I got to see animals reunited in fort Lauderdale they were going to start the Jacksonville tour with the police 🚓
Great video:) I think I saw Andy do a dminor add 9, dminor, c, aminor- on the video where he’s playing a green guitar-
Great lesson man! It’s so crazy/sad how mega talented people can sometimes create these masterpieces together, but then break up the band because they can’t get along… Maybe they should have followed ZZ Top’s example….separate tour busses! 😉
Murder by numbers should be an honourable mention.....
As I recall Andy played some pretty complicated jazzy chords and progressions.
Not even a chorus pedal? On an Andy Summers lesson? You're slipping, Dave! Thanks for this, is great.

Yeah, didn't Andy influence the Edge with his use of pedals?
David, another great LNL! Have you done a chord work for Eric Gales yet?
That harmony part on Message in a Bottle will never cease to amaze me…
Can you do one on Mike Oldfield?
PS: Looks like you've meanwhile modified your Strat a bit, since the Andy Summers video 3 years ago! Different pick-ups and possibly also a different bridge! 😀
I really wanted to see the right way to play Murder by Numbers and Miss Gradenko. But the Amin add9 from Spirits was killer
The Pinky Reach was his thing, that first song sounded like it was written for Blondie.
This was great and I really love your lessons. I always heard that chord in "The Bed's Too Big Without You" as a E minor, not G over B as I think you called it. It doesn't sound right to me. Are you sure? You are a great teacher, so I just wanted to double check. Thanks!
We can call Andy "guitar George" because he knows all the chords. Brewster may as well.
So lonely..
I'm hearing Fmaj6 as the second chord rather than Dm.
