"CHOPSTAKOVICH" - Jesse Sieff

A piece for solo marching snare drum written by Jesse Sieff over the second movement (Allegro Molto) of the Symphony in C Minor, String Quartet No, 8, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Written with Shostakovich's characteristically darker and dissonant style (and career history) in mind, I found it fitting to perform this piece for my audition with the USMC Drum & Bugle Corps. For me, the biggest challenge of this piece was not playing the notes, or adjusting rhythmic time to a chamber symphony with the most unforgiving instrument in the world - it was simply having the audacity to write over a legendary composer's masterpiece. The caliber of Dimitri Shostakovich's musical genius is something I profoundly respect, and my hopes are to share the influence of his music with others by expressing it as genuinely as possible though my instrument.

i think the best part of this arrangement is how well it leans into what i call the "industrial terror" of Shostakovich's music. the snare makes it sound even more like a grinding, unstoppable machine, especially in sections like 1:27 where it sounds like an engine starting up. terrifyingly good

It's so hard to make music from orchestra translate well with a marching snare. But this guy aced it. I respect this. And I have to mention how much I love this snare. I still like the 5th the best. The tension, he got that one so right! The power of the desire of freedom.

If you put a thumbs down on this you have no respect. I'd like to know how many years this gentleman has been playing. Even if you hate music and live in a cave you would find this to be amazing. Utterly flawless and fantastic.

Bro you’re such an artist. The fact that you’re playing all this with a blizzard in the background is insane. I know this was planned
