Chopping Silage on a Small Dairy Farm l Third Crop Alfalfa 2021

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Watch my family and I work on our small dairy farm! In this video we are chopping third crop alfalfa. We show raking, chopping, hauling loads, and packing on the silage pile! We use a 7810 John Deere pulling a Gehl 1085 chopper. Pulling loads we used our 7405 John Deere and Meyer Chopper Boxes. Hope you all enjoy the video, thank you for watching!

I have to complement you as a videographer, make me feel I’m right there with you on the farm. All the things I see you doing, reminds me of my youth growing up on our small dairy farm in Southwestern, Pennsylvania Farm during the 1960’s. Unfortunately, our farm was not big enough to support our family and my dad alway had to work at a second job to support us. Fortunately, I still have many farm friends who have big dairy farms, and I still get to ride along during harvest time. I’ve add you my favorite farm video, KZread is so great to allow me to visit with some wonderful folks. Keep up the good work, and god bless you and your family.

Chopping hay is the way to go. Before I was 18 we baled 20,000 square bales for a 100 head of dairy a year which was not fun. The weather never on your side. Then my dad put up another silo and chopped all but about 2,000 bales but that was after I left for college (no more cheap help). I started hay farming in VA in 1996 and did square bales by myself for horses until that got old. Now I round bale everything. On your hills round baling would be a challenge.

I am now 72, but, grew up on a small farm, and, farmed myself when i was a young man. I love your channel, it shows that the old ways still work. When everything has auto steer and computer chips, it is nice to know that you can still make a living with the kind of equiptment that you use. I had all New Holland hay equiptment, and, John Deere tractors a good combination.

I love the smell of fresh cut hay, especially if there's some sweet clover in it but I doubt you're seeding sweet clover. The sound of your chopper is different from I remember from running a 540 rpm Gehl ages ago. I started driving tractors when I was eight, raking hay with an ancient horse-drawn side delivery rake pulled by a Farmall C. The best times of my life have been spent around tractors (except in the dead of winter). Thank you for your splendid videos.

Have you guys ever had a wagon tip or roll away on ya? I live in extreme eastern Iowa and we farm the river bluffs of the Mississippi River. When we chop hay we start the wagon on the hills, then finish filling the wagon on the more level ground. Chopping corn can be nerve wracking.

Had a 2 wheel drive, no front wheel assist, doing hills for silage. It was nerve wrecking alright at times. Trying to gauge whether I could get up the hill for one more round before staying on the lower area to finish the trailer. Failing was a real pain, trying to back that thing down the hill , the front of tractor was too light and it used to start to swing around. On the flip side, you'd hear the tyres barely holding grip on the way down when the dew set in on the evenings. Fun times though!
