I inherited a chainsaw many collectors would love to have. It's a Porter Cable. They sold their chainsaw division to Stihl over 50 years ago. It weighs a lot but can walk through a 20 inch log like a knife through soft butter. But after using it for any extended period you definitely won't need a gym.

The best thing that you can say about any tool is. I have tried other comparable size/style from different versions, and I keep going back to this one. The tool that becomes the go to is simply the best of the type for you. Thanks!

You display good technique. Your Stihl is running spot-on. Years ago I sold Husqvarna and I felt they represented good value for the money. Stihl saws are a cut above the competition (no pun intended). They might cost more, but you get what you pay for. Watch your gas/oil mix, your bar & chain oil, chain adjustment, and general maintenance.

Love my little MS170. Perfect size for fitting on my saddle for a climbing saw and perfect for throwing in the truck to go get firewood. I've got poulans, homelites and holzfformas. But always grab my 170. You can put the metal dogs on the 170.

Good video. People tend to get saws which are too big. When you've humped 460's and 660's around all day you really appreciate a 170 or a 009. I use chain saws every day and it's a blessing to use a small saw. So light and nimble.

Nice job. I like my MS170, except mine has a tool-free chain adjuster. I like the old school like yours better. You should get in touch with Upstate Brush Control. They're near you, have a KZread channel with a small following, and have a Fecon forestry mulcher and a couple excavators. Maybe you can work a deal with them to do land clearing while demonstrating how a forestry mulcher works.

My first experience with a tractor was on a 1965 Massey Ferguson which wasn't much different than the one you drove there on your farm. I learned so much while operating that tractor and did quite a bit of work clearing a field for the guy I was working for. I have a Stihl MS250 chainsaw and that thing never worked for me since getting it new and have been to the repair shop more than 5 times. I got it to replace an older Poulan Pro saw which gave me great service. I said that I would not buy another Stihl saw after this one and have a newer Poulan Pro saw which is difficult to crank also and ended up getting a battery Poulan Pro saw and it works perfectly for me.

A+ on the video! I went with a Stihl MS251 as my first gas chainsaw, as I did look at the dogs on all the Stihl models and wanted to get something above entry level, as about half my property is woods, and the 251 had beefier dogs, a larger engine, and she has worked great, but I have only used her one tree thinning session so far.

I use the ego battery powered chainsaw with 18 in bar (equivalent to a 45cc gas saw). I agree with you - with a sharp chain it is a thing of beauty and works great. I have probably cut several cords of wood with it in the past year and used it for trimming some Leyland cypress trees. I only have one complaint and that is battery life. Battery is heavy (saw over 14#) and dies before I am tired (usually 30-40 minutes) run time when doing firewood. Thought about buying another battery for it but it is 300$ so now I am looking to get a gas powered saw. So many choices out there. Looking at getting a pro grade saw simply because I am a firm believer in buy once cry once 😂.

My first Stihl was an 010 in the early 80's. Still have it, then an 041 and 034 in the 90's. Sold the 041 to my neighbor last because it was to heavy. Still use the 034 sometimes works like the day I bought it, My wife bought me a MS271 last year for Christmas and I really like. If I didn't like Stihl, I would have a 460 Rancher. By the way Josh, I finally got to use that Muratori rotary tiller I bought from you a couple of years ago, worked great.

Good video. I've used a couple of 170s that weren't mine. They can get a little fussy with the carb. Great homeowner saw. I've yet to see how it would hold up to professional use. I have the ms180C which has the metal spikes, the Actual easy start system, and toolless chain adjustment/replacement (Tool necessary to flip bar though). That is my go-to saw for my business, so I will verify that model will hold up to professional use in extreme heat 110+ degrees or 30 degrees. Can't kill it!

I had the MS170, I had won it in a golf Tournament. Found it a bit light for blocking firewood. But it was a very good little saw, so I gave it to my son in law as he did not have a saw. I have the Poulan 50cc 20in , in fact I have 2 now, I find they they work very good. I have 2 because I ordered a pull cord assembly, so I figured at the price I could have 2, well under $300. One thing I did not know until the parts came, they are made by Husqvarna, must be a off breed of them.

Stihl has a Primer Bulb on their easy starting String Trimmers. They left it off their Chainsaws, hence, hard to start. Chainsaw Chaps and Gloves may not stop an Electric Chainsaw. You need to flip your Chainsaw over and stick the teeth in the tree when cutting from underneath. You can get Steel teeth for your saw. If the saw kicks, you want it to kick away from you not towards you. I usually cut from above and use a home made brace, so I only cut from above.

The only down side to a stihl is they want their petrol/oil mix perfect. I found out the hard way on my first saw after sharing fuel on larger job with a friend I was helping to clear his land over a year. I got as much firewood as I wanted for my family in return for helping him. As the mixture was not perfect, I eventually blew the piston.

I’m going to try to grind down the stumps to ground level with an angle grinder. My chainsaw is electric, an Ego Powerplus 40cm. It’s a good chainsaw. I could not justify the price of Stihl electric chainsaws & trimmers.

Now I haven't watched the video yet but I'd like to say I've just recently got my first chainsaw, a 42cc Poulan from harbor freight, and it's a pretty great saw for the price. I can't imagine the 30cc holds much of a candle to a 42cc saw. I think a cheaper saw with more motor would probably be preferable to such a small saw from stihl or husqvarna. I will admit I had to take the first one back because it wouldn't idle, but I've got the 2 year replacement plan. Harbor freight is pretty good about taking care of their customers.

I have an Echo CS-370 with the 16” bar. I like it better than my Stihl MS170, it’s easier to start and has better features and more power.

170 is a good saw. I run them for brush work (cut-stump w/herbicide mostly). I see the 171 has the side tensioner which I've always wanted on this saw! From the vid tho the 171 might not be worth it??

I think you can port the jets and give it a little more fuel and adjust the air and it should start easier I don’t know a lot about it but I know a ported saw runs fast

I’ve had a 270 Farm Boss for years. I didn’t know anything about saws but knew a friend that made his living doing landscape and such. He told me to buy the 270 with a 20 inch bar. He said if I needed more saw, I needed more experience. He was right and it’s been a great saw. Better yet my local dealer has taken care of me over the years. Another thing I add is to not use auto gas with ethanol in it. Either buy canned fuel or find a place that sells pure gas. Your saw will thank you.

What kind of canned gas or pure gas are you talking about? I'm new to chainsaws and never remember seeing canned gas before or pure gas??

@@kingjames9564 , for pure gas I am talking about gasoline without ethanol added. The problem is that ethanol is hydroscopic. It attracts water. So it will crude up your saw. So if you can buy ethanol free gas in your area you can use it. The other option is to buy chainsaw fuel that is not only ethanol free but has oil to lubricate your saw’s engine already added. You will not have to add oil to your fuel. It’s a little more expensive but unless you use your saw a lot, like every day or several times a week, it’s a pretty good deal in the long run. If you only use your saw occasionally, read the manual and follow the manufacture’s procedure on how to store it. Properly maintained a good saw will last decades.

The MS 170 is exactly the saw I have, I was looking for something like it and my Stihl dealer lead me to it. It has been a true workhorse, and I've had very little problems other than user error and mistakes. My saw is about 8 years old and still going strong. I would like to get a second saw bigger saw with at least a 20" bar, any recommendations? I want it with more power and able to take on the bigger trees. Great review!

I have a Poulan that size and absolutely hate it. It's heavy and has a very hard pull. I've been thinking about getting an electric saw for trim work. That should be a lot less hassle.

I've got one of those MS 170 chain saws , Use it for camping . I see you're not using that big Chinese Holzfforma any more . You have the Husqvarna in the back of the tool rack . Could you do a review on that Chinese one . Same with the little Job cutter chain saw that sold for $100 . Review on that would also be great .
