"Software isnt everything" is the best thing I´ve heard Today. But just wanna add: Photoshop HAS a Timeline, Tweeening, Onion Skins & Export as Movie Files, too. It´s under Windows -> Timeline, and even if it works a little weird to get used to it and it doesnt work with stuff like Audio Scrubbing it´s kinda nice that they addded it in the newer Versions (I think CS6 and higher?)

If you animate a bouncing ball in TVP it will look just like you drew it. If you animate the same ball in Flash or Hamony it will strobe. Meaning the ball will seem to flicker on and off or that you can't exactly place your eye on the ball. The feeling of TVP animation is closer to that of actual hand drawn animation in my opinion. TVP brush capabilities in particular the water colors and pencils are unparalleled.

I animated my whole diploma animation in Photoshop just to prove a point to my professor who said its not possible hahah. And I did it in CS3 version no less. But CS6 has frame-by frame timeline (I don't like the default other one) and it's the most natural way to animate for me. I have pencil 2D and it's very nice and simple. Krita bugs out for me and I can't do anything in that program when it comes to animation. I also have old version of Toon Boom and it's alright but kinda hard to get used to. I am wondering about TVPaint for ages because it really looks close to just hand-animation everything and that's what I'm into. Tho on the other hand Toon Boom is industry software so maybe I should invest my time into that if I want to go professional??

  • @pencil2d

Thank you for trying out Pencil2D, hopefully we can continue improving it so it becomes a natural choice for most users to use anytime you're not using more robust software. As Toniko mentioned the software doesn't make the animator, while Toonboom is leading in the software market for TV Shows and Feature films, it has a lot of learning materials and you wouldn't be working on all of it's features as a studio animator, although most definitely it would be important to learn about rigging and compositing nodes to fix hiccups during your workflow instead of holding yourself back while waiting for a rigger to be available. TVPaint is mostly used for European movies and certain Japanese TV productions, while it's very well known and very good for traditional animation it still has some quirks that doesn't make it as suitable for tv production, however it's less "technical" so If you learnt Harmony first, picking TVPaint can be easier since the technical marvels they have (like CTG layers or the Keyframer) are secondary to drawing itself, meanwhile in Harmony there's a definite mixture of technical tools that can improve workflow efficiency for any kind of audiovisual product you want to make :)

I'd like to suggest aseprite as well. it has a heavy focus on pixel art but you can zoom out and draw at higher resolutions as well. It's one of the few where the interface is pretty friendly and the buttons do what you'd hope they do (somehow i had lots of problems with loosing frames in pencil 2d...) And gif exporting is as painless as it gets (much friendlier then doing it in photoshop!) It goes for about 15 bucks, imo nice and breezy to work with even if just for roughs

It wasn't bad. It felt more like drawing on paper than Animate but it still didn't have the feel I was looking for. Then went to TVPaint and its everything that I've always wanted.
