Choosing to have an only child: 'People were offended' BBC Stories

Despite the myth that only children can be selfish and lonely, one-child families are becoming more common in many countries. Harriet Noble, an only child herself, travels across Europe and asks three mothers, including her own, why they decided to stop at one.

When you have more than 3 kids, some people will call you selfish for having so many kids "depleting world resources, why not adopt, etc". When you only have one kid, people will say why only have one, the kid won't having anyone to play with. When you don't have any kids, people will call you selfish too. Just cannot satisfy everyone, just do your own thing and please dont judge others on their personal choice.

I see it this way if you have one child because that all you can afford is a lot better than having kids you can't support. I'm an only child. but me and my husband had two and the reason I did not want no more than two. Plus I'm not having children I can't support.

Oya Doyin - you’re absolutely right, this was my experience too. After having me, my parents had my younger brother when I was 18 months old because they thought it would stop me being lonely. LOL. If only they considered the possibility that this second person raised alongside me would be a completely incompatible personality to mine (he’s always been a stubborn upholder of everything “normal and conventional” whereas I’m a proud individualist and conventionalism bores me) and that he’d constantly feel the need to criticise my every move because of this. Sure, he meant well and all, but there’s no denying my childhood - already under stress from a learning difficulty and a medical issue - would have been significantly less stressful without having to deal with a nagging perfectionist little brother constantly trying to play Jiminy Cricket in my life and tell me what to do. On top of that, an even bigger sibling issue in general is the inevitable insecurity that arises when they’re always being compared to each other by family and friends. It affects the siblings terribly - often causing lifelong resentment issues between them. In all these situations, having a sibling only breeds or exacerbates loneliness, it far from prevents it - and it’s sad that so many still subscribe to the outdated notion that an only child is guaranteed to be lonely... as if there’s no way other than siblings for them to connect with other kids...

I want my child to be only one that receives love from me and my spouse and feel no need to compare with anyone just like I do. Only children are also close with parents, I would want to be my child's best friend too. The best thing for a child to have is a supportive loving understanding family which is actually rare these days.

Who takes care of a parent isn't as simple as counting their kids and saying the duty should be split equally. It will depend on where each individual sibling is in their lives. Where they live etc. I know of an elderly couple that refused to leave their home even though they needed care and all their children were living out of state. A few wanted them to sell their house and come stay with them but they refused. Is that the kids fault? And keep in mind their children also have jobs and children in school or are supporting children in college. They can't just pick up and move. And many many people are in similar situation.

I just have the one daughter and she’s all I want. She is 17 and has never wished for a sibling. Contrary to popular opinion, she is not lonely, precocious, or immature although she is spoiled but that’s because with one there is more money. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me and has changed my life for the better. I could not imagine life without her. We are very close and least I don’t find myself comparing kids or having to break up sibling fights. She won’t suffer mental health issues due to sibling rivalry like I did. Society needs to get over its hang ups about single children. They are better off, some of my daughter’s friends envy her without siblings. She has never wished for one and least I won’t be leaving a Carbon Footprint as I felt the urge to have a large family like so many are doing. One is quite enough!!

Again your kid might not be honest with you. Am an only child. Only told someone of my crippling loneliness once when i was borderline blacked out and wailing like a woman, when you die your daughter will mourn alone, with no one truly beside her, in her old days she'd be even more lonely she won't have siblings to visit and her kids would be distant You really want your daughter to sit alone on a porch, widdowed (men tend to die at younger ages and women tend to go for older men lmao) and alone? She'll have no family to turn to and be known as the clingy, desperate, attention seeking grandma. But yeah spoiling your kid is better than giving your kid a family. My parents thought the same things you did. I acted the same way to this day my parents don't know that i long for a brother or sister, i couldn't tell them, it'd break them seeing as they both have 3 siblings each and them realizing they rid me of that. Lmao if you truly hate your siblings you're far too childish to be a mother. But yeah i realize its too late to do anything about it for you, stop advocating it and hurting real people.

  • @hb11912

J . You’re wrong actually. My daughter who is nearly 18 has never wished for a sibling, moreover she is grateful she didn’t grow up with one. She does have a 29 year old half sister who she gets on well with. She has had countless friends who say she is very lucky not to have a ‘pesky’ brother or sister and were quite envious of her as she has been spoiled and I’m very lucky I’ve always had the income to support her. I know what it’s like to have a sister who did nothing but bully and judge me all my life and now I have long lasting mental health issues because of it. It’s because of my own experiences with siblings that influenced my decision to have the one child. Siblings can truly mess a person up and I didn’t want my daughter to suffer too. It’s the best decision I ever made and have never regretted it. Just because you’ve been lonely doesn’t mean every single child is - that’s what friends are for and my daughter has had plenty of those. She has also done much better at school than her peers with siblings and is 18 going on 25. She is far mature beyond her years. I’m also being responsible for the planet in having the one child and seem to be financially better off also. I think you will find you’re the one with the radical ideas spouting that people should expand their family when one is enough. Unless you are a parent yourself, then you don’t know what you are talking about. May I suggest you live and let live as there’s a lot of parents of ‘onlies’ who disagree.

@@user-vv1do1wg1j Wow, you have one heck of an imagination. When their parents pass away, they'll have their spouse or family friends by their side. People are generally kind and courteous, they wouldn't just leave someone to deal with the death of their parents by themselves. My dad is an only child, when my grandpa passed away everyone helped us (and especially my grandma who now lives on her own) to get through the tragic time, also, nobody will become a clingy old grandma sitting on the porch (especially in communities like mine) because we have a lot of people to look out for each other, including relatives and friends that are incredibly close. Keep in mind that all only children are different, even though you might feel lonely without siblings many only children are fine without them. There are a lot of only children in my community, who are doing absolutely fine. In fact, being an only child has meant that the friendships I have built are very strong, some of my friends are actually much closer to me than to their siblings, they talk to me about whatever they're going through at home despite having siblings because they feel like they can trust me more. You don’t understand how hard it is to be an only child. We want company. We want someone to look up to. We don’t want to be left on our own to care for our parents when they are old. The reason we lack social skills is because the only people we have to talk to is our parents. Half the time they don’t even want to talk to us. It seems like a punishment, I would die to have a sibling.

You know i see my nephews joke with their brothers about their childhood, i see a brotherly bond I'll never have. Every time I'm with family i realize I'm the only one without a sibling. It's not better and saying it is harms real people like you and me.

J honey I have two brothers and we don’t joke about our child hood. We don’t talk. You can make friends and have child hood friends to reminisce with. You all are dreaming and longing for something that is often times not a reality for children with siblings. You are not guaranteed to be friends with your siblings and siblings often times do not rally together to take care of their parents. It usually still mostly lands on one child so you would’ve most likely still been alone in that. Siblings or not

We are working 2 jobs to pay the bills and now I'm pregnant. The maths is just stacked against us. If we want more children we will need a bigger apartment and have to work harder therefore see them less. It's a trade off. I am 30 and I have one brother, he is 9 years younger to me. We hardly talk. So having a sibling doesn't actually guarantee any backup? Yes, more child means more means of support for the parents but that to, now a days, one cannot guarantee. To be honest, its every person for himself/herself. I have one daughter. My wife and I always think whether to plan another or not! Thus while searching for wisdom I came across this video. It would be nice for her to have a forever companion. But being a parents must be tough when you have to share your love. It has been lovely to just put all our love into our wonderful daughter, and for her never to feel left out. :) Swings and roundabouts.

My daughter is 12. I'm not in a relationship haven't been in a serious one since her dad and I split when she was 3. Initially I chose not to have anymore children because I didn't want multiple baby farthers. But as the years went on I realized I just didn't want anymore for multiple reasons. I wasn't in a serious relationship. I felt my daughter was already too big and they wouldn't be as close also I liked my lifestyle. Co workers give me a hard time, tell me that it's selfish if I just have one, that I NEED to have another or I'm still young I will change my mind when I meet someone. I got my mind set I tell them things are so much easier. 6 more years then off to college. I can hopefully find a man and travel the world. Hey mother's gotta dream lol

The thing is, these people don't live far away from their home country. My family live practically at the other side of the globe and I want to be able to take my child there to visit them at least once a year. You need a lot of money to travel, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I would love to have a sibling, and I have always been envious of the bond siblings share. I am an only child and so are both of parents, and I feel there were more psychological harms than benefits.

I’m technically a youngest child but was raised as an only child (my siblings are old enough to be my parents, and are more like an aunt/uncle to me than anything). I was not spoiled, but I do think I have a selfish streak from being raised as an only child. My childhood was fine, and I don’t feel like I missed out on anything. Currently pregnant with my first and seriously debating if they should be an only child or not. The only thing that gives me pause is that they will have no close cousins, so I worry about them feeling isolated in the family due to their age.

My dad was an only child for 15 years then had a brother. My only first-cousins(3) also have only child families. My family has a weird history. My grandparents came from large farming families but as time progressed, the family thinned itself out. The siblings either died in birth, really young, or in their thirties. No one got to 60 except my grandparents. So, as a superstition precaution; my grandparents said to only have 1-3 children per grandchild. As they believe it was karma for having excessive children and it needed to be balanced out. Personally, I want only one child but prefer to not any at all.

I am a only child. I am in America. My mom was only 16 when she had me and she wanted to have two or three children. She is a only child too. I was born and two years later when she was 18 she was finding it difficult to find full time work. So my parents decided to just have me and wait until they are old enough and have full time work. My dad went to university at 18 and didn't come back until 21 and my mom had a full time job at 20. So when my dad returned from university at 21 he was able to have full time work and at 23 they were financially better but I was 7 years old and I was used to it and they didn't think it was right to then have another child when I grew up 7 years without a sibling.

Personally, I’m an only child and I would never subject a child to being an only child. Even if I couldn’t have a second I’d adopt. I know it’s kind of an unpopular opinion but being an only child isn’t all that fun (although I’m biased because I have very little family in general). But in my experience, it’s a lot of boredom, a lot of loneliness, and now that both me and my parents are getting older, this creeping feeling that someday I’ll be responsible for the care of both of my divorced parents all on my own. It’s not something that most people understand but it’s a heavy weight, especially when people are constantly singling you out as spoiled and privileged. I saw so many of my friends argue with their siblings (I mean really genuinely argue, gum in hair, toothbrushes on floors, etc.) and I remember through all of it, feeling this genuine sense of jealousy. People with siblings will never know how lucky they are, but I suppose that’s the real irony of life.
