When I was 15 I was selected to attend Space Camp in Alabama. It was a big deal for me but when it was announced at my school assembly, the whole audience laughed. It was absurdly nerdy, but I embraced that part of me and I hope you guys can too.

Honestly, the word nerd loses it's meaning after the age of 27 when you find out that teenagers and generally all kids are just a**holes. Nothing is more strict than the social hierarchy at schools because kids enjoy pigeonholing everyone, worhshipping the d*bags and ripping apart the kids that are less socially adept or poor. That's one of the reasons why I dont want kids... you never know what natural disaster will fall out of your clam cave because let's face it, very few of them are exceptional people. Most of them are just burden on you and the planet.

I got a lot of bullying in my youth because of being too nerdy. But at the end I see the fruits of learning and ignoring the negatives.

I never found a place where I felt at home, so I ended up going from a 30 ACT and 3.259 high school GPA to living in a smoke-and-cockroach-infested trailer in the middle of nowhere, Oklahoma. The people I'm living with continue to smoke even though it causes me to have asthma attacks, and the roaches only exist because they leave food-encrusted dishes in the kitchen for months at a time. The floors are discolored because of dog and cat urine that never gets cleaned up. The only reason I live here is because I have nowhere else to go.

I was on track to getting a Comp Sci degree, but being around people didn't alleviate my loneliness and depression. It actually made it worse, because everyone around me had friends and a sense of community. I felt just as lonely and isolated in comp sci as I did in engineering, liberal arts, and pretty much everywhere else. No place felt like home, so all I did was go from one place to another feeling like people just wanted me to go away.

I think it's slowly happening in some way. At least my experience in school was very good, I have had a lot of good friends. I wasn't "cool" or something (I didn't even care about that) but I don't have any experiences with bullying. In fact I got along pretty well with most of my class. I think that's the experience for most of the people nowadays

I was bullied for trying to be the cool kid. I wanted everyone to like me and know me, but it back fired. I didn't know how to act, I just had a desire. I had no care for grades or learning, but I wish I would have been nerdy instead. Then I could have discover many things that changed my way of thinking for the better, sooner. After high school no one will make fun of you for being academic or discussing educational knowledge, it is quite the opposite. The more educated you are, the better off you are, in the real world.

Damn, sorry to hear you were bullied as a kid. I've seen enough kids go through it to know it sucked. I was never cool, nerd, jock or anything. But I was never bothered because I was just a just boring, middle of the road, kid. (Thankfully my uniqueness didn't manifest until after the my school years.) But, to those out there going through that, I cannot even say, just be yourself and nothing bad will happen to you. But I can say, just be yourself and if people don't like you then, at least, they are not liking the REAL you. (And that's fine, because everyone has diferent tastes.) And those that DO like you, will at least like the real you. And whether they like you or not, YOU are just fine as you are.

I’m a pretty nerdy girl. Other students would sometimes say rude comments about it, but it didn’t affect me. I like being nerdy. When I moved on to middle school, I enrolled in an advanced class and most of the students there were nerdy just like me. I don’t get made fun of anymore. I have found some friends who share the same interests as me

I wish I would have your mindset while I was in high school, just to gain some approval from my peers I was always the clown of the class, the last thing I wanted was to study science. It was just when I turned 20 that watching youtube videos that I became interested in science and went to college for my degree.

Its amazing to me no matter how old or young you are, there are millions of people just like myself. I too had to be the class clown so I wasn't so 'weird'. But I did like science. I have ADHD so completing homework or finishing exams on time was hard. I had an 8th grade science teacher that saw I had difficulties and allowed me and others to do 'extra credit' book reports. Mr. Harris is one of two teachers I remember in school. This is why I enjoy Tibees website because she doesn't judge or be condescending and she explains difficult subjects in simple terms. She has become one of my teachers through You Tube! Good luck in life.

I was a nerd in HS but with a big ego lol. And idk what's this whole thing about nerds. I'm in uni rn and there's still jokes in my class about being a nerd. Mind you, I'm studying computer engineering. We're ALL meant to be nerds 💀

This video made me feel a lot better. I'm almost twenty-four, returning to education. I did a certificate in science last year and discovered I really like maths. Then out of the blue after watching a few documentaries and looking at some past papers, I discovered a passion for astrophysics. It really does go to show that nobody has everything figured out - and we're all still learning (probably until the day we die). I'm going to be applying for a physics with astrophysics degree here in Ireland for next September. Thank you

I have studied science as a major in high school. And did engineering. But I am doing a totally different job but still science is in my heart. I keep reading articles specially on physics and computer technology, watch documentaries, follow channels like yours.

I think nowadays science isn’t weird or you wouldn’t really be a nerd or outcast, atleast from my experiences in high school. I want to see that audience laugh at you now that you are happy, successful, getting your PhD, and have thousands of subscribers.

When I was 3 years old I flew to Australia to visit my grandparents. They gifted me an interactive diagram of the solar system. Since then, I have had this hidden passion for space that I didn't realise up until recently. I'm 16 at the moment and have only just realised how important my education is and that I want to be an astrophysicist (or someone that works in the space industry) when I'm older, and so I've started taking the most challenging but rewarding classes to get to that point. You've definitely helped me through the last few months, so thanks! Also, you should play more Universal Sandbox 2. I enjoy watching that :) Oh and I just have to say, school really stinks. There is not a single soul at my school that shares the same passions and interests in space as I do. That's why I'm REALLY looking forward to Uni, so I can finally meet people that speaks my language. Only one and a half years to go :D

I started following this channel because of two reasons: first, I wanted to follow a channel in this language because I'm looking for becoming proficient in English (I'm a native Spanish speaker); second, because I study at university and I'm really passionate about science and really enjoy this life as a student. It's been tough to find people whom I could identify with, and I could say you're one of them: that's why I really look up to you. This video really encouraged me to keep it up.

I am in high school. I relate to this video so so much. The last summer was when I really got into physics and really started studying in during my free time. When school started, I was still used to the idea of being popular and trying to fit in like I had the previous year (when I tried desperately to fit in where students almost felt obliged to let me join their popular clique) and so I wasn’t very diligent on the idea, and swug between being a nerd and just causing trouble. Now it’s the end of my year. I can say that I’ve changed a lot over the course of a couple months (in the past, almost each year of school I went into a different phase). I feel like I’ve truly found myself, and even though my best friend is sort of drifting away, I’m trying my best to adapt to the new me and the path I’ve chosen in life. All of this, thanks to Neil Degrasse’s documentary, which caused me to have an interest in Carl Sagan and read his books, and a nerdy kid from last year, who so beautifully explained the universe in a long and to some students boring presentation. Stephen Hawking ans many other physicists are my role models now. At first, I felt threatened by how many men there are in the physics community, but thanks to you, Tibees I can finally look up to another woman who is all I want to be as a physicist! Unfortunately, people do like to pick on my because of my interests, my closest friend even developed a small circle of relatively nice girls who continue to comment on my need to constantly follow the rules and study. The boys in my class also seem to be significantly vexed by the fact I have an interest in the sciences (physics and maths specifically) and so they take pleasure in mocking me. However, i have built a defense mechanism where I am quick-witted and sarcastic whenever they decide to come up with something clever to say, this has led to most students to be intimidated by me and some of the girls tend to praise me for some reason. Of course, I appreciate the admiration but it gets annoying at times. My point is, i constantly outsmart whoever tries anything against me in front of their peers which embarrasses them, and I don’t know if that’s a god way to deal with students like that or not.

Very glad you posted this! I understand exactly what you are saying purely because I didn’t make those same sacrifices back at school, I was in fact all to eager to disregard my education entirely to pursue only music and a rather exuberant social life. Since becoming so passionately engaged in science through books such as Brief History of Time I have come to painfully regret that, and I’m currently making amends by pursuing an education in physics a little later than some. I found this video strangely inspiring, so thank you!

I'm so happy to know that someone else has gone through all the stuff that I'm currently going through and has turned out just fine. Currently as a junior I always would spend my time studying so I could maintain my good grades but I'd always see my friends on social media out partying and doing stuff and idk it made me feel like a loser , especially on a Friday night where I would be at home studying , I never really minded I enjoyed it more than going out and doing stupid stuff , but the thought always lingered in my head. So Thank you its reassuring to know that these choices pay dividence because you turned out just fine and you are successful!

You are so inspiring, In my experience I have found myself struggling because as I move forward in my degree I've noticed that little by little i'm sorta shifting apart from the people in my life that i once had so much in common with & it becomes a bit difficult to maintain those relationships. I have realized that this is pretty much what keeps me from reaching my full potential, i guess is the fear of feeling out of place and not being accepted or understood by loved ones. Your advice really means a lot to me.

I can sooo relate to what you describe at 2:00 - 4:00 - exactly my life in highscool. It actually is truly sad that being interested in or even passionate about science or anything at all is always labeled as "uncool" in highscool. But anyway, I don't really care weather I'm known as "cool" or not, it's way more important to me to be myself an pursue my interest.

"This above all else, unto thine own self be true" is to me the best advice. You have chosen the path of science because your heart pulls you in that direction. The result of those choices is you are now a bonafide scientist living the life you have chosen and your happiness and satisfaction in that life shows. I wish I knew you in school. I am a science enthusiast ever since I was 7, I was always fascinated with science and was planning to be a scientist. I had 2 options - to get into academia or to have a career that supports me financially... I chose the latter. I decided to become a nursing and chose to study nursing (BSN) and I loved it! I never realised that I would enjoy talking to people even though I'm a massive introvert. Mental health nursing is my passion and the neuroscience behind how our mind works is fascinating to me.

With all the love and respect, I must say between thousands of thorns lies a flower, so better we chase our passion than what others insist. For me, science was the favourite subject from a young age and always wanted to know or derive an ultimate equation which can describe everything, now realised how beautiful this creation is and how beautiful our minds can be if we choose to love creation. I find you to be like a flower among thousands of thorns.

Math is THE universal language and the one thing that I studied from grade school thru to getting my Finance degree (w Excercise Phys. minor) in college that I can say I have applied to every day life, every single day of my life. I am so happy that you shared this. I feel the exact same way. I'm just about to graduate high school, and yes for the first two years or so I felt constantly awkward, uncomfortable and unhappy in social situations. Sadly, I tried to fit in to some degree back then. What I've learned more lately however (past 2 years), is that people like you and me are never going to have to bother with those people again, because we've gone so much further. 20 years down the line they'll look at people like us and wonder how we ever got there, and that's when they learn there's no better way to spend life than be a nerd.

I can really identify to her past almost on all the details. But now I see a girl with great content and self esteem in her eyes and this is reassuring my hopes. I am pursuing physics through my undergrad days and my friends and grades are dropping in number due to my extreme loyalty to the subject. I am hoping that some day I will be able to get to America for a graduate program and physics and math will become my bread and butter. Thank you for sharing. I was just talking about this yesterday how we change as individuals-we don’t have a single, static psyche throughout life. I would say we become more of ourselves with age. For me, I’m a high school drop out. I was a troublemaker since middle school. I challenged my teachers intellectually and didn’t care. Couldn’t stand authority. I took that time to find myself. I became a philosophy junkie and eventually built a reputation for being a nerd by virtue of my interests and increasingly eccentric personality. I ended up attending college, was placed in advanced classes from the entry exam and projected to be Summa cum laude. Always look to finding yourself in the midst of chaos..

Gosh....the more I listen and hear her, the more love I feel and wish I were lucky enough to know her. Not one thing is nerdy to me. The pursuit of knowledge and especially teaching it to others, is something to be greatly admired I think. General society is wrong about most things to be honest and brainwashed into thinking they're brilliant when they clearly are not. So smart...such a wonderful smile and out-going personality and drop dead gorgeous too. Wow, you're going to have a wonderful life.

I am 67 and was the school nerd in the small agricultural town where I grew up. There was no internet in the early 60's but there was a library, my other home. Coming from that time, I can tell you that the guidance you provide to other young people struggling to understand their nerdiness is of monumental value. Thanks!

Nice story, I had the same feeling too. Now I hang out with a mix of friends, some of which like to talk about Maths and stuff and some who don't, but they all seem to enjoy learning to some extent so they don't mind. Don't know if it's just me or if times have changed in some way.

This is super super cool Toby. Growing up as an outsider abroad and then in the UK and with no internet but only science and science fiction books for company meant that I educated myself, and now I work high up in my field along with fellow nerds and other lovely people. Knowledge and deep passion win.

I actually like having friends that are not like me , i mean friends with different interests ,because they make you discover other aspects of life , i'm a nerdy person since high school ,i used to think that i cant have "cool" friends but after i went to college i met different kinds of ppl that are now my friends and i'm pretty happy about it :)

i am and was nerd and was bullied badly....it hurts...but knowledge is power.....keep moving....respect ur interests medicine is my life....never ever doubt ur intution and interests....always follow ur heart...because atlast its ur life....ur last breathe is yours...and make it a point...u take it not in regret but satisfaction....much love.....u r the most sober girl i came across thank u

That was beautiful, Tibees, thank you! I too have lived the life of the nerd and everything you described in your narrative of your life aligns perfectly with the narrative of my life. My academic obsession since early childhood has been the study of history, particularly military history. The life of the nerd is the life of the nerd regardless of the name of the academic discipline any individual nerd chooses to follow. Physics for you, Tibees, and military history for me, it’s all the same life of the nerd. When I was in high school, I had *one* super-close friend who was in the same intellectual groove as me. But when I got to West Point, I was surrounded by a bunch of people who were in the same intellectual groove as me and it was good. Again, Tibees, thanks enormously for proving that people like us are not alone.

Hi Tibees, im touched by how you have ignored all the shit that comes with being interested in subjects that are considered nerdy (in my experience mostly maths, physics but others too) and how you still have done what you loved your whole life. I for one hate the term "nerd", i dont like the term because i dont associate myself with being nerdy. I enjoy going out and drinking, having fiends and doing the usual stuff in high school, maths just happens to be something i found to be enjoyable. Things have changed, stereotypes are out the window, ANYONE can do maths, physics . I hope you get what i mean.

Exactly.. Just because we like science doesn't mean we have to be the stereotypical skinny nerdy anti social people.. I like physics but I also like traveling, going to the gym and well sometimes getting drunk

OMG i felt so identificated with this video Im from mexico and here at my school or even in the whole country is not that comun to choose a science career,so anytime i told a relative or someone what im gonna study(molecular biology) they make this "face" a face like "ohh that boy, he's gonna end poor in some street of mexico" Whowever i dont care what the others think, i just wanna be happy doing what i most love, learning about life Thanks,i really feel that confidence because of your videos, so keep going,you're a super wonderful woman and the living prove that if i propose it to myself i can be someone and make a better world Love from mexico❤

I can relate, I got really interested in astronomy back when I was 11 (I'm 15 now), and I don't care when people call me a nerd, science is interesting!

You are so interesting because you tread your own path. Not partying, not getting blind drunk is just a sensible choice. Later in life you'll hear people saying they wished they hadn't wasted so much time in a mess. Refreshing

When I was in 3rd grade my science teacher took us on a field trip to NASA's jet propulsion lab, and looking back I'm pretty sure that was sparked my interest, and now i want to pursuit higher education in physics

Truth to be told, it doesn't get any better than being a scientist. When I was around 6yo my grandfather gave me several Science books, Math, How things work and an Enciclopedia, I loved the last one the most, Archaeology and Astronomy were 2 of the topics I read the most about; I was a good student throughout school and somehow managed to be at the top of my class, something that I always took pride in 😅 My dream has always been to be able to go to Uni and earn a degree with all the passion for knowledge that resides in my soul... I hope I'll be able to do so soon, already 23yo and the spins of life have kept me away from it, but I'll do my very best to accomplish it and enjoy all the hard work involved. Thank you very much for sharing this with us, a big hug for you!!! 🤓

People that are into science are considered nerdy, yet those who refer to those as nerdy are quick to embrace and utilize science on a daily basis. Well made video and great perspective!

I never felt in a rush to complete my degree because like you, I also felt like I was finally in a place where it was ok to be passionate about nerdy things, like I could finally shed the exhausting social facade of having to act cool, unbothered, and indifferent about the things I loved. Tibees, thank you so much for your videos. You are lucky you were able to find a like-minded cohort when you got to uni. I didn't find mine until I was 39 and got a job at a major research organization. I've passed your channel along to my 10-year-old grand daughter. By the way, your video on the Euler identity was a great refresher on stuff I learned in engineering school over fifty years ago but that got lost in the dusty corners of my mind.

For me it was Walter Lewin who aroused my interest in science while I was in high school. Now I am studying Physics. I feel like it´s still a little bit harder for girls to come out of the closet on being a nerd while high school.

Wow, this video is so inspiring ! This what I love about this channel, it doesn't limit to talking about sciences (even if, as a student of Space Sciences in a master degree, interests me), but also to all the implications and how it impacts our personal lives. I recognize myself in this video (as many other watchers :D). In my secondary school, I was the only one to love Physics and to choose to follow these studies. There were a few other students who like science (two chose Biology, two Chemistry, and a few others went in Engineering) but I was kinda saw as a 'outcast', and I received a lot of mocking during that time. It was so weird, and kinda 'comforting' to arrive at university and meet people like me. Finally I could talk about sciences and other fascinating domains without appearing 'weird'. Since then I met new friends, not only in Physics, and instead of laughing or considering me with distance, they respect my path of study, and it helps me to feel more confident :) Interesting fact: while you describe your life as a student 'without drinking parties', I began to go at those parties after arriving at university. That is because beer, as well as other alcohols, is very popular in Physics Department of our université. I would have never guessed it before my arrival :o

I get very confident watching your videos because as you said here I can find people as me for the first time getting interest in science and proud being like that. Thank you for your efforts 😊😊😊
