For starting out, I would suggest buying a trailer like I did back in 2014. I bought a R40k trailer from Makro, the Wilderness 310 trailer and it really treated me very well over the years and had zero issues. I've done Baviaans, Mozambique, Namaqua Eco 4x4 trail, the West Coast, Namibia bottom to top, Botswana, Zim, the Transkei Wildcoast all the way to Kei Mouth to mention a few higlights. That of course if you don't mind towing... That works out way cheaper than modifying your 4x4 and you can carry much more load and cater for 5 people easy. ...and I have towed it on trails where caravans and trailers are not recommended only because I'm confident in reversing it for hundreds of meters without breaking a sweat.

Well done on this series of videos. Definitely the best and most informative I have come across from a fellow South African. Pick up my new Legend this week.👍👍

Recently bought a hilux, thanks for doing and sharing all the homework. I don't do a lot of off-road, but quite a lot of dirt road.

The US market has a bespoke truck design called the Tacoma that’s made in Texas (and also a plant in Mexico ) which meets all the stringent US federal regulations on light trucks. The hilux is sold (and assembled) globally. The Tacoma is also not offered in a diesel (emission regulations )

Thanks for the video. American here, but looking to buy a hilux surf that has a 1kz. I figured anything above 33s would be too much, because I also want to travel on the highways for trips and whatnot. But the one I'm considering comes with nice rims and 33s, also lifted 2.5" via nice suspension upgrades etc. I reckon I should add the front mount intercooler for that additional torque, regardless.

Hi Matt. Amazing videos (especially Namakwa series) , we will be going here for the second time at the end of April. Just a quicky , tyre size on your Hilux ? I am currently running 265/60r18 but I feel the profile is just too low .... your thoughts on this issue ? ( I also am fitted with BF Goodrich A/T )

What type size do you have? Because if you put 31.5 inch on, that’s the current size of tyre size on a hilux?

hi this is nice content. My hilux 3.0 2005 factory tyres 265/65/R17 has worn out and now is the best time to get new tyres and rim. In your video you mentioned one size up, so for my tyres 265/65/R17 what is the size for one up and also the rim size. I have lifted 2in front and rear add a leaf only. Thanks

Loved the video, Matt…quick question…have you thought about your steps as I have hit mine on my Land Cruiser and I am thinking of getting rock sliders as the supports sit at a bad angle perpendicular to travel and catch easily…cheers👌🗜

I’m covering that in the next video! And no, the suspension is set up for extra constant load so it doesn’t matter.

Ironically a lot of South Africans think that M+S stands for mud and sand. It is not. Its mud and snow as they have a similar effect on traction. Only learned this when I moved to the UK

Hi Matt, also have a legend50. Also looking at upgrading the tires. What size BF’s did you fit? As the original tire size is 265/60R18. What size did you go to?i am looking at 265/65R18 or the 285/60R18. Feedback would be much appreciated

I went with 1 size up, 265/65/R18. Anything bigger would be too big. This gives me an extra 1.5” diameter which just helps a bit to clear the diffs off the ground. I’m not sure if 285/60 would work, maybe ask around to see if they will touch anything in the front wheel wells or not!

@@trevormakgobalo4829 Hi Trevor, yes I did, but they do touch the mudflaps, but my intention was to upgrade suspension witch i did. Went with EFS and very impressed. It gave the hilux a 3 inch lift that sorted out the problem of touching and a much smoother ride. All worth it my friend👍👍

I have been to Namibia, Zambia and locally with mine (fully loaded with extra range fuel tank, additional water, steel bumpers, fridge and roof-top tent). It doesn't accelerate quickly, but I don't expect it to. However, I am gentle with my vehicle and don't do hectic, technical stuff. If you have already got one, stick with it. If you haven't possibly consider a larger engine for more power.
