I have 2 288xp OEM saws that I rarely use. Seeing the 288 farmertec kit is only $220.15 I think I need one.

There is a counter weight on crankshaft to match the weight of the piston. It is perfectly matched to balance the inertia of the piston moving up and down, in order to delete excesive vibrations that will destroy engine and bearings. So, replacing for lighter piston is not such a good idea, if you dont balance the counter weight.

Instead of machining the combustion chamber one could cut the base and cut off the top of the piston. If one cut the same amount off of both, one would increase blowdown and intake timing while keeping the exhaust and compression the same.

This would also further lighten the piston increasing hp without raising compression!

Always nice to go over the basics again. My vote is for a 55 husky build for sure. I have two stock and would like to tinker with one then compare them. Always good stuff. Thanks a bunch. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙

@@tinmanssaws I would be curious to see what that 288 would do with a buckshot dual port muffler like I built for my 281. I don't know what it is but you wouldn't believe how it sounds it's got a really deep hollow sound to it and it seems to really pull hard.

Thanks Tinman. Really enjoying this series!!! My 288 will be used primarily for milling spruce and some mild hardwoods. I’m thinking this style of build would suit that as well, numbers wise. Although I’ll probably keep the stock piston. What are your thoughts? Also I heard you were thinking about a doing a 50cc class build😃 that excites me! Can I suggest building a husqvarna 55! For selfish reasons😉😉

low tension ring on a one ring piston is interesting. Seems like the single ring pistons always make less compression in the saws Ive built, even with the same chamber and squish. Have you ever compared compression from low tension to regular tension? Im more in the stihl game where 2 rings are more common.

Per wild chance...... could the new piston actually be a Proline? Reason I ask.... I was looking at pistons from Meteor and Hyway from Wolf Creek and neither have the "wings" you pointed out........... BUT..... the Proline from Sawzilla does. Your thoughts. TY!

A newbie question - you go without a gasket but will add 3 thou of Motoseal. Are you taking that 3 thou into account with the timing numbers? Don't they all change by adding the Motoseal? You got the numbers without gasket or anything, then it sounds like they won't change with the Motoseal addition? Hope this makes sense.

Thats a great question, .003" won't change the numbers enough to effect anything.

Did you pressure test it? I just finished a Stihl 271 and when I pressure tested it.......... it leaked. Just a little but it allowed me to fix that before moving forward.
