I have an insinkerator 555ss installed it at my house 23 years ago, my wife uses it daily cooks all the time and it’s never even jammed once. Unbelievably good disposal for your home & worth every penny.

I just replaced a badger five with a three-quarter horsepower compact model. The thing I like about the upgraded models is inside is stainless so it won’t rust out as easily which is exactly what happened with my badger five. The new one is also nearly silent. Where as the badger was super noisy, so I’m happy. And yes, I can attest the only two times in my life where I’ve had a clog was with potato peels or pasta. I learned my lesson.

Stainless inards are great but most disposal suffer motor or bearing failure when they die. Not rust.

I noticed that there are two motor types you can get them with. There is permanent magnet or induction. Induction is usually going to last longer since they don't have brushes like the permanent magnet ones do. If you have any good power tools like compressors or table saws the better ones come with an induction motor. Induction motors are quieter or maybe even silent depending on the quality of them. If you have a swimming pool the motor on the filter is induction and rated to run for a long time too. Even if they overheat for some odd reason they may have a thermal fuse that temporarily disables it so it can cool back down and those fuses usually reset automatically but the same motors may even have a circuit breaker (that red button).

Lol I no longer work in the field and spend most of my time trying to talk people out of flooding their house or creating s traps in the retail world… I also constantly try to steer people away from those Moens and other disposals. Get a 1/2 hp insinkerator, you’ll be just fine. Put your food in the garbage the disposal is for the left over rice and what not stuck to the plate

What’s a disposal for if you can’t put stuff down them? Plate scraps only? Seems like a waste of money if that’s the case.

They’re all a waste of money, they’re useless and are just another point of potential injury cause in a house, you’ll be happier with normal sink drains

Most of the other brands are made in China. insinkerator Made Kenmore for Sears. Whirlpool actually owns insinkerator now.

The Badger 5 series should be banned. I've seen so many kitchen cabinets damaged when these eventually leak out the bottom.

Seems this guy doesn't deal with many septic system homes. Otherwise he'd be singing a different tune about the grind quality difference between the various models. I agree with public drainage systems, as long as you have a decent sized drain setup, that's properly plumbed, you might not "need" (technically) a multi-stage grind unit. Could get away with a single stage unit, as it all just flows to a treatment plant. Not the case with septic systems and their drain fields. Also, different households have different needs. Some people cook way more, or entertain more, than others. Standalone homes have various outdoor garbage needs/issues (animals, pests, rodents). Some might be more environmentally conscious, etc. Not all households have the same needs. In which case not all of them have the same disposal requirements.

Aside from all that. I would personally skip the leak prone Badger series entirely if you own your home/condo (not renting). Start with the Contractor series as the baseline, and go up from there if you wish for a more robust, or feature rich unit.

When was the last time you purchased a contractor series unit ? ISE stopped making those years ago. The average person does not need extra power unless like I said you wanna grind up the Christmas tree after new year lol. And bad for a drain field huh ? That’s false. Food through a disposal is not much different than food through you. Missing a few stomach enzymes is all and there are already plenty of those in septic systems. Most modern septic tanks have filters before the exit to the field so again no worries. But yeah call me out on another one of my videos. I appreciate you watching.

​@@masterflowplumbing9812You are hilarious. The "Contractor Series" that you might be thinking of, only was discountinued sometime between 2021-2023. They are still available for sale as new all over the place (Insinkerator honors the warranty from either the time of purchase, or date of installation). Besides that Insinkerator currently still makes the model "Contractor 333", which is part of their "Power Series", which technically replaces the Contractor Series. So whether the older or newer, they are both still available as Contractor models. Besides that, not sure how you'd know much about septic issues, as you're not the guy that would be called to take care of those issues. People call septic tank service companies, not plumbers, to deal with septic systems. What I was referring to as far as potential drain field blockages, happens quite often with people that have underpowered, or disposal units that don't grind small enough. What happens is either the chunks are too big or stringy to be quickly broken down inside the septic tank, and float over and clog the filters, or entrance to the drain fields. Which slows the draining to the field, often enough that it can start backing up the septic tank into overflow, or start backing up into the home plumbing. Another issue if food scraps are not finely ground is stringy bits of organic matter from things like banana's, celery, potato peels, carrot peels, etc. Can get caught on the filters, encourging biomat growth that latch onto those things, further clogging the drainage. So short answer is yes, if you're using a garbage disposal with a Septic system, it's ideal to have that waste be as finely ground as possible. There is a big difference in grind quality between the various units, they are not all the same. Which is why I was saying it's important to consider multiple factors, before recommending a specific unit to someone. As far as my personal history with disposals. My last personal purchase was an Insinkerator Pro 1100XL, that I purchased brand new about 2-3 weeks ago. To replace a 3/4HP Badger unit that failed after a little more than 3 years of very light use. I specifically wanted the Pro 1100XL, as the newer top of the line Advanced Series, has the same 3 stage grinder elements (the 4th stage in the 4 stage units isn't an actual grind stage, but just a wiper arm underneath the cutter disk), but it is lacking other features like the jam sensor, and auto reverse that the previous gen 1100XL had. Pretty sure whether it's enforced by Whirlpool, or Insinkerator decided on their own, but they are cost cutting these units down in terms of features, and potentially their overall quality. Another reason I wanted a pre-Whirlpool designed model. Just in case.

Will soon be a thing of the past, like Central Vacuum. Plumbers never install garbage disposals in their OWN houses.
