Check out my 3 favorite folding e-bikes! Which one do you like best?

Based on my ownership, not only testing, paid testing I’ll share with very briefly and pointed out the three better e- bikes, also for your pocket, and there are mostly not overlapping with this video presenter’s choices. First, the best among these 3-4 which I owned and riding at least 80-100 mi before disclosing my preferences are in order of performance: 2024 Velotric Fold 1 (now $1,200), 2023 Aipas A2 Elite (now $699-745), Ride1 Portola ($995) and the benchmark one, 2023 Lectric XP 3.0 step-through model. All these are foldable and step-thru, and equipped with the best optimal wheel-tire size of 20”x3”, which allow the rider more maneuverability, more ability, the favorite size of all. This is the most popular type of e-bike today for a reason. And weight matters very much for folders, the lighter, the better, where Portola excels the best among listed, especially the so called net weight (without the battery, 7-10 lbs). The gross weight will affect the rider how easy will be carrying it, transporting it, even when I used plastic containers on two wheels to slide the folder to the trunk of my crossover using a foldable car dog ramp, free of lifting way. Will start w/ #1 Velotric F1, why because what I’ll disclose out-passes the other three, not as a price, but as performance detail. Once I switched Velotric F1 from class 2 to class 3 e-bike (max speed 28mph using the PAS 5) the torque profile of each PAS level changed to the point that riding all day regardless of the terrain (flat, uphill, steep grades) using only the lowest and less discharging PAS 1 level I was able to handle every terrain challenge. I did not need a throttle, I did not need to help myself more than w/ PAS 1 in order to get over even shorter and very steep grades. Just one PAS level can get you practically everywhere, which other e-bikes listed can’t do. All other three otherwise budget and solid-built competition, were unable to achieve such a torque/power using only PAS 1, even when all three competitors also were switched to class 3. This is not about the speed one can develop with different e-bikes, but about the performance profile of all these e-bikes available today. For example, Aipas, Portola and Lectric needed to switch to higher, more battery discharging PAS levels or involve the throttle in order to make the steep uphill. I do not need even to provide with more comparison specifics in order to rate these 4 e-bikes and when they performed differently than Velotric Fold 1. The unfortunate thing about Velotric F1 is the fact that this model is not anymore considered budget e-bike with this new price above $1K. The budget e-bike market today is the one of $1K and below, not above. Hope this info can help you select your e-bike and enjoy the pedaling even when it’s assisted, not mopeding (100% throttle torque).

A 50+ lb bike is not low weight for lifting. The best full featured low weight bike I found and purchased is the 38 lb Qualisport Volador for those that put a priority on weight without sacrificing other attributes.

It’s low weight compared to other 20x4 fat tire folding bikes. But true, there are certainly lighter weight ebikes if that’s the top priority! Qualisports is a good option.

really liked this video! - folding a bike is still really trippy to me but its SO convenient! - I've actually ridden that orange and red Horizon you show in the beginning, it's a great bike and it folds! ... crazy

I went for the 20x4 because they are around (ballpark) 20 lbs. lighter than a 26 in fat tire. I have to carry my bike up a flight of stairs. I rarely fold it though.

I've been researching folding ebikes for a while now. The weight of the bike is a major concern for me. I have found the Gotrax R1 20 weighs 48 lbs. and has had good reviews. Have you reviewed this bike, if so what is your opinion of it ? It ticks all the boxes for me and it will be my first ebike. I look forward to your reply. Thanks

Hi! I haven't reviewed it yet, but only 48 lbs would certainly tick a box! It is a budget ebike, but if you like what you're reading in the reviews, it might be worthy :)

Definitely check out the Portola ( go.ride1up.com/SH5A ). It meets all your criteria and I love it (being on the shorter side as well). The rear rack is rated for up to 130 lbs too!
