Choosing a set of tools for linocut - A tutorial by Linocutboy

Фильм және анимация

In this video I talk about the set of tools I use for making linocuts and which ones I recommend to get if you are starting out.
Featured in the video are the following Pfeil tools: 11/1, 11/3, 9/5, 12/1 and 7/10. The large V gouge is from a set of Japanese cutters which come in a blue box.
All of these tools can be bought in the UK from:
handprinted.co.uk/
intaglioprintmaker.com/
www.jacksonsart.com/
Please comment and I will do my best to answer questions.
You can also check out my book 'Linocut for Artists and Illustrators' available from bookshops and from my online shop:

My website also has a blog with more useful info on things like which tools and materials to buy and where to find them, plus tips on carving and printing and lots more!

I'm loving all your videos. Exactly the info that I've been after as I haven't printed since school. I am getting the Japanese starter set and wanted one extra fine tool to supplement. Do you definitely recommend a U tool over V for detailed outlining? I'm doing an intricate Indian wedding elephant design with the couple's name etc.

Thanks Salma! Glad you like the videos. The difference isn't huge between them. The U will give you a more regular, even width line and the V will have more varied width. I've always preferred the U myself.

@@Linocutboy Brilliant! I have just submitted my order. I can't wait to start. You make everything look so easy. I will be transferring my design onto the lino this weekend. 🤪

Thank you this is really helpful, I have a set of Pfeil tools but I didn't understand what the numbers corresponded too and now I know ! I also think there are some in my set that I won't use. I would be interested on your thoughts about the Speedball Speedy carve.

Thanks Amy! I've not tried the speedy carve. I suspect it's too stretchy for me! But I think it might be good for stamping.

I don't know the brand. They come in a blue box which says woodcarving tools, 5 pcs. There is some text in Japanese too. You can get them in a few places in the UK including handprinted.co.uk I'm not sure about other countries. Hope that helps!

@@flash_flood_area I ended up getting it from Jackson's for 'bout half the price listed on amazon. I really hated the speedball cutters since they un-screwed while working
