Choosing a Deity is Hard! Why? Tips for New Pagan Witches

Feeling pressured to have a patron deity? You're not alone! Maybe you've devoured goddess lists from ten different pantheons and taditions, or maybe you've even joined a neo-pagan or Wiccan group. Paganism feels right for your spiritual path, but something isn't clicking: you're still not sure how to pick your first deity to work with. (Or, maybe you've picked a god or goddess you like - but what do you do next?)
Here are a few tips and strategies to get over the biggest hump of beginner paganism: worshiping deities.
Whether you're pagan, Wiccan, a druid, or a lightworker, I hope this perspective on overcoming patriarchal monotheism when entering the pagan path helps you find the right fit for you.

I feel the same about a lot of deities. The Morrigan, for example, or Hathor. They check every box on paper but for some reason I don't feel a click. Meanwhile, goddesses of Fate draw me in repeatedly even though I don't consider that a personal interest of mine. I've felt connected to Aphrodite quite a lot recently, specially being a libra(ruled by Venus) and born in the year of the Rabbit(although different tradition, the rabbit is a sacred animal to Aphrodite). Also, for as long as I could remember I've felt connected to bodies of water and aquatic life, as a result I worshipped other deities that are seen in society as being connected to water(such as Poseidon, Amphitrite, Chalchiutlicue, Tlaloc). However, when I started to learn more about Aphrodite and learned that she is a deity that is very connected to water, I started to worship her. Moreover, being bisexual and someone who loves physical touch and sex a lot, Aphrodite felt like a goddess who was calling me a lot. Almost instantly did I feel connected to my goddess more than any other deity, worshiping her felt so natural and comforting that I instantly felt she was my Matron. I still worship other deities as well, such as Chalchiutlicue, Tlaloc, Mother Earth, Xochipilli(who visited me in a dream), Poseidon, Amphitrite, and Hecate, but Aphrodite is definitely the deity whom I feel most connected to and my Matron.

The first deity I came into contact with was Aphrodite as well. I was going through a really tough time about 3 years ago and was crying in the bath. She came and hugged me and gave me positive affirmations. She came to me again a few times since then including once in a DMT trip. I'm not good at regular worship and I've also started researching other deities, specifically Celtic. I no longer hear from her when I reach out (or any other deities for that matter) and I'm worried I offended her for those reasons.

Freya has been sending me signs for months now and I’ve found myself drawn to her more and more. I’ve never been interested in deities because I don’t like the idea of worshiping an entity. I more like the idea of working with them, learning lessons from them, and discovering new things about me and opening myself up in my craft with their aid. I also don’t really like the idea of boxing myself into a religion. I don’t necessarily know if that’s considered disrespectful or not really how it works...? I guess I just need a little more guidance on the subject🥺

  • @breelleinbloom

    @breelleinbloom

    3 жыл бұрын

Definitely not disrespectful! If you want to approach a deity with the relationship of mentor and student, that is absolutely on the table. There are a few deities and traditions where worship and devotion in the religious sense are expected or required. These are typically closed traditions, though, so I wouldn't worry too much as long as you do your due diligence in research. Freya is absolutely a goddess who is open to many types of relationships with people, whether religious or otherwise, and has a reputation for benevolence. I recommend checking out a few other KZreadrs like Freyja Norling, Little Cosmic Crow, and Sacred Seed. They have some wonderful content that dives into Freya a bit more and could help you define how you want the relationship to look.

@gentleblasphemy I had left Christianity from a forced upbringing, and I know what you mean about feeling boxed in. These days I honestly research a lot of different practices, but feel most close to Japanese Zen Buddhist practice, which is dogma free, which is quite nice for me. Selene has been reaching out for a while though, and I'm just looking more into Hellenismos and how to approach her more appropriately, but I also feel like I'll always be learning something new from some new tradition, while still being respectful to each one individually. We shall see how this journey goes.

I love this so much! I totally relate to the influence of patriarchal religions effecting how we relate to deity. As someone who grew up Christian (I was even in a Christian cult for 8+ years), I struggle with relating to other Divine energies (especially feminine ones), but I'm recently feeling a strong pull in that direction. I'm getting into paganism/New Age/witchy forms of spiritual practice, and the pull to relate to a goddess energy is strong! Looking forward to researching and trying that "bear method." 😁

I was on my spiritual path /craft for over 10 years Before I actually decided to work with deities. Prior to working with specific theories, I would just say mother or or spirits.. I think that Acura craft gets more personalized and you start understanding your chosen path more clearly that is when it’s a good time to bring in deities for certain request or certain seasons. My first was Brigid.

Without ESP's or visualization abilities it's just going to be harder for people in the same way that someone born to do math is going to have an easy time at algebra. Yet those of us who weren't can still do it and find joy in that.

I was brought up an atheist and never had an interest into religion, even less catholic (the main religion in my country), so when I got into witchcraft later : I practiced as an agnostic. I didn't have any dieties but I felt strongly drawn to Baast and Anpu (Bastet and Anubis as I like to call them). I always loved egyptian mythology more than any other mythology, so I've finally decided to make my first Imbolc altar dedicated to Anubis and Baast (death and hapiness -rebirth also I guess which made me think of spring). Honestly, if someone had told me years ago I would make any altar for one of these deities, I'd thought them crazy and laugh my **** off, but here I am ^^. I'll probably include some nordic gods next, since I feel drawn to some of them as well =) Part of me is still a bit agnostic, but I strongly believe that you should do what makes you happy in life and this makes me happy, therefore I do it.

Also I received one sign from Persephone a couple days ago. I feel overwhelmed, bc one deity was already a lot in my mind, now two??? I wish my mind wasn't holding me back and I could contact both of them without doubting everything...

Well I really never grew up with a deity. I really liked a lot of Greek mythology because I love their design and their clothing and everything. But the only deity that I was really interested in was Hera Artemis and Gaia. But if it was like Norse mythology it would have been Freya Thor Odin frig. Now if it would have been an Egyptian I really didn't really get into that. I did like their design and everything. But what definitely got my attention was Isis goddess. But I really never really grew up with them. But I would say mostly in the Greek area. But not only that I get so excited when it comes to Norse mythology. Also I definitely want to give you heads up on this is when you were talking through this whole video your video was zooming in and out like it was trying to focus on you. I love your energy. I hope you continue your videos. Because you definitely help me out and I'm a big nudy and I would love to do the right thing for Freya and make sure I don't mess something up and get her upset when I know I'm new at all this. It's been a year now and I'm still trying to figure out what I am and what I do

Okay so: I decided that i wanted to welcome my spiritual guide and i always received goddesses, however i didn’t know which one was it, so i asked them (my spirit guides) to present themselves in my dreams, to give me a sign. That night i dreamt a situation very familiar, but instead of suffering on my own, this little girl named Selene would take care of me in a motherly way, in the end i was able to escape the toxic situation i was in with her help. now i have never ever known or heard of a name such as Selene so i looked it up and i learned that it is the greek goddess of the moon so...i’m not sure what to make of it ._. if anyone has opinions i’m open to listening

Aphrodite approached me a couple years ago and I said NO!!! Because I was scared the hell???? But after 2 years in a different place she approached again, and I was in a better place to recieve and so while slowly we work together I have found her energy to be quite lovely. And she's not afraid to make sexual jokes lol But she's there to help me love myself as it has caused a lot of turmoil in my relationships. I feel resistance in my heart in being vulnerable with her but I feel if I continue to work with her, and love myself, I can heal my childhood finally and just be ok again. Shes already changed my life.

Depends on your purpose as to why and you will work with many from their specialty. For Celebrating the Harvest Demeter is good cause she is a Gddess of Agriculture and fertility. If doing a Fall ritual perhaps Dionysis the God of wine would be nice. If doing a protection Circle perhaps Innana or Haecate, or even Athenae as can can confer protection when your back is turned etc. If protecting troops for protection spells perhaps Aries the God of War etc. You get the idea which ones line up with what you are doing with thier specialty provides best results. A Hindu God of abundance is not as good at protection strength etc as he is best at abundance. More ideas Esotera for Easter the Holiday named after her, Cerrunos my father, the God of the Forest around Yule when the God takes over for winter, A Friday ritual could be for Freya she has Friday named after her. And thing helps too, the months use to be different on calendars. November use to be the ninth month Novem meaning nine, December use to be the tenth month Deci meaning ten. The God Janus January is named after etc. If you like Horses Eponia the Goddess of horses, Lady Gadiva she is called. Ponies are named after her Archangel Michael

Thank you so much, this has been so helpful! I do have a question though, I'm a very new to all of this (like, literally only a week into it) and I think a deity has tried to contact me. I don't know if that's actually what it was, but I just can't shake the feeling that my intuition is right on this one. But basically, I was chilling in my room, playing my guitar (and really getting into it btw), and something kept making my door open, but only while I was playing. It occurred to me that this might be some kind of entity trying to say something, or just reacting to my playing, so I just said out loud "If there is someone in here, can you make that door open for me if you like my song?". So I started playing again and sure enough, the door opened, not even a minute into the song. I also asked my pendulum if it was a deity that was doing this, and it said yes. I literally have no clue if that's what pendulums are even for, but idk I'm just working with the resources I have at this point. If this was a deity, I really want to figure out who they are, but I have no idea how to go about it. Any suggestions?

Could have been the spirit of your house (each house has its own divine spirit). Though that's assuming that what you experienced actually is supernatural. It literally could have just been a draft. If you really want to worship the Gods my suggestion is that you pick some you feel are relevant to your situation. You don't need Them to show up. Just go to Them. Our ancestors worshipped Gods based on what was relevant to them at the point in life they were at. I suggest you do the same

This is incredibly helpful as this has been a conflicting topic that's been on my mind for some time. I consider myself an eclectic pagan, my issue is that I feel a connection to both Norse and Greek deities. I am of Celtic descent as far as I'm aware but the connection I feel with the Norse and Greek deities are far stronger than that of the Celtic. Is it appropriate to honour a few deities despite them being from different pantheons?

The first deity I ever got contact with is Bastet, from Egyptian mythology. Shortly after, I ended up being very drawn to Anubis. He had been much more “active” during my sessions than Bastet. Does this mean anything in particular? Both make sense in the way of signs and stuff, but I have found myself working much closer with Anubis (and not for lack of trying with Bastet…I just don’t wanna bother Her if she doesn’t want to work, you know)

I've always wondered how I choose this, but was under the impression that they would need to choose me and I would have clearer signs I would have this dream of a man, he was shirtless but it looked like leaves wrapped around us as he embraced me, he had super curly brown hair and the embrace was the safest I had ever felt. I'm unsure what to do with that because it sits in the back of my head. I'm tied to greens, the forest, plants, gems, natural wood all in my room and good with animals/children as well as highly empathetic and protective but childish 😅

You're supposed to have basic respect for all deities. You don't need to worship a deity to show Them respect. Just be respectful. They are deities and we are humans. There is a distance of power between the two groups
