Chon-Ji Tul - Taekwon-Do Lesson #17

This video shows you how to practice Chon-Ji Tul which is the first of 24 patterns in Taekwon-Do. It explains how to practice various parts of the pattern, such as how to pivot when you are turning, how to move your body during the different stages of the movements as well as how to remain balanced and develop more power. Then, the video explains the sequence of all 19 movements in the pattern.

Other Taekwon-Do Masters and Grand Masters may have a different interpretation of Taekwon-Do theory and practice, so if you are a Taekwon-Do student, it is important to check with your instructor if you are not sure about which interpretation you should be following.

    I am a beginner, 2nd year of interrupted practice due to tendon achilles injury. The exercise tips are very clear and the pace is quite slow to show the movements to allow practice on one's own. Thank you.

    My child is a beginner and this video really is supporting him and his confidence practicing at home. knowing the whole breakdown of the pattern and knowing the meaning and how you should position yourself for each technics this also helps with preparing for grading.     A cool tip for knowing which way to turn is to go to whichever side your pinky is facing. That seemed to work for getting my son to remember :D

    Many thanks for creating these excellent videos, they have been s tremendous help to me as a new comer to Taekwondo. I have a question please: I get joint aches and clicking boans the day after training Q: what can you recommend to aliviate this?

    Make sure you warm up properly and loosen your joints before training. Cooling down is also important. I do yoga type stretches to cool down and also when I ache the next day after an intense session. Make sure you get good rest and drink plenty water to help recovery.

    Thank you, Grand Master! Two months ago I started my new adventure in Taekwondo (unfortunately, I left it when I was 10 years old), this time in ITF. Now I am 35 years old, but I fell in love again with this art and I feel completely motivated. I train together with my 7-year daughter and I love your videos, they are extremely helpful, as sometimes we think that we are doing all the movements correctly, but there is so much to improve! I would like to ask you something: my daughter also likes taekwondo classes (however, not to such a point); sometimes I try to practice forms with her (mainly Saju Jirugi to pass her first exam), there is a way to teach her so that she does not get tired inmediately? How do you deal with children with such a patience? :D Thanks again, I will try to pass the white and yellow belt exam all at once.

    Young children can easily get bored doing drills. One way to overcome this is to teach skills through games. Another way is to give them challenges. I sometimes get my young students to perform a pattern one move at a time. If they make a mistake they sit out. Last person standing wins the game. After a while, they learn from their mistakes and last longer in the game. Good luck with your Taekwon-Do adventure.

    Good stuff Francisco! I'm in a similar position to you. I quite TKD when I was 17 and then rejoined with my daughter at the age of 40! Now a year and a half on, I am going for my black belt! I've fallen in love with TKD again!

    @@elkiskor good for you! Keep at it! This is my third stint doing it and I've almost reached my black belt! It feels like a massive milestone. You'll get there! It's a mental game but you can do it! That's coming from me, a guy who's had spinal surgery, both ankles reconstructed, shoulder operation and both knees repaired!

    With all do respect sir, when i learned these group of forms there were a few differences, back in the 1960's. There was never a walking stance. The front stance was performed in a longer stance with 70 percent on the front leg with the knee above the toes. This was done to put more driving force in the punch, and to strengthen the thigh muscles, besides moving faster. The walking stance puts the balance point under the torso. Next, the blocking arm in the back stance was higher up on the side of the head, both fists facing outward where both forearms would meet. This would allow the blocking arm to come around in a level block allowing the side of the head to be covered around to the face. Finally. in the back stance, it was performed where the person would be able to pick up and hold the front leg for front kicking, Also a person was able to retreat to the rear if need be quickly. Your sidekicks are a thing of beauty. Stay safe.

    When you did taekwon-do back in the 60s it was still being practiced very much like karate. However General Choi made many changes over time to the ITF system. Classic example as you said in the 60s you had front stance with more weight on the front leg. Now we have walking stance but the weight distribution is 50/50.

As TKD has transitioned over the years from the "blood and guts" self defense orientated system, originally taught to the ROK (Republic of Korea) troops in Viet Nam, i can see how it is has now become to a sport minded style, and the most practiced system worldwide. I have great respect for the fantastic TKD athletic techniques of today, and in my day, were never taught. But my greatest concern is if a person is pursuing a combative self defense art for self defense, another system might be a better choice, instead of modern TKD.

    All instructors need to develop. I have a lot of experience and I am sure I wasn't as good an instructor when I was younger. So I hope the instructors you were refering to will also develop into better instructors in the future.

    You are not supposed to kihap. You shout "Chon-Ji" at the end of the pattern. This is how we have been taught by the founder of Taekwon-Do, GM Genersl Choi Hong Hi.
