ISIS has more nasty plans, for sure. But the most damage is caused by the US because they are so powerful. ISIS cannot do much and is currently beeing defeated by IRAQ, Syria, Jordan and so on. The US invasion of IRAQ was the reason ISIS exists in the first place. So its logical to call the one who summones the deamons more dangerous than the demon itself. Right?

Interesting. Chomsky has a way of putting things so clearly. His analysis of the nature of the Republican Party is chillingly accurate, and the thing that makes it so chilling is that it's based on a direct,, mundane reading of Republican Party history and policies: no conspiracy theories or deep existential analysis required, just the facts.

There's a good selection of researchers out there, who unfortunately fall under the 'conspiracy theorist' group, but give just as damming and acurrate information as Chomsky presents. Gotta love this guy though.

He speaks largely just the obvious that we all know , if we look with our own eyes and think about the facts that we observe, but we are silenced or afraid to speak alone. Thank you with all my heart Noam Chomsky.

Noam Chomsky never fails to grab my attention. He teaches geopolitical history in a way that is hard not to listen to, and with utmost fairness, pulling no pu ches. I'm getting more from liistening to him than I got in 4 years of college. And I'm also a voracious reader, especially on the kinds of things he teaches. It's a toss-up between Chomsky and Richard Wolff, as to which I find more interesting and informative.

Loved listening to this on 90.7 KPFK.

Chomsky needs to reach at least the age of 190 years old, so he can share all of his wisdom with us.

I actually think Chomsky has endorsed trump's policy idea for Syria, "peace zones". People talk about how the debt and overregulation/social engineering are making life unbearable. Combine that with this title. If you believe the climate will get out of control, then the whole government is "the most dangerous organization" in history. What if both angles are right? We need innovation, not controls, to fight climate change, not a carbon tax which is just a double-tax on everything, on top of the tax on everything already. And they can play with that a lot. Just to ultimately feed the progressive state, which only gets hungrier. The grandchildren mentioned will be loaded with debt on top of climate change. So they can't afford the innovation, or challenge the economic status quo in a free market. Power consolidates more and more. Find that substantive?

Its funny that these small government types whose mantra is "lower tax, lower tax" - don't realize the complete inequality in the tax structure. The powered establishment has manipulated the tax code in their favor so that the lower income earners pay a higher percentage of their income on taxes. Unless the "grandchildren" stand up for themselves, they will continue to pay a tax debt burden cleverly passed off to the taxpayers from big corporate bailouts. In addition the free market mantra is really something that is used to justify lower corporate tax rates and loopholes and it is complete hypocrisy in light of the fact that major tech companies of the 21st century have made massive profits which were developed in the labs and classrooms of publicly tax funded universities. Say what you will about big government and institution, but it has done a lot to contribute to an atmosphere where corporations can really thrive and profit, even more so than those corporations themselves.

It's like a party tax. I think we can all see Academ is not really conservative these days. The more you earn the more you are taxed is true for most of us, except the "clever ones" you move it of shore I guess.

Chomsky made a pretty compelling case in the video. If you look at it, the GOP is very clear surrounding the very two crises currently endangering the further existence of our species. (1.) It is utterly against climate policy. (2.) It supports further militarising certain places where we know things could escalate into nuclear war. Both of these with major public support. I don't think the assertion is anything like as outrageous as you make it out to be. It's a sensible observation. No organization in human history has proposed such dangerous policies and had such enormous influence.

1. The other party is for an almost certainly counterproductive climate policy, the desperate socialist wants to be able to tax everything twice. That's what a carbon tax is, I'm of the austrian school, technological transitions of this order, buying new cars, require savings. More taxes won't help, at most I would support rebates. What you spend on "green tech", you get taken off your tax obligations. This is so obviously the better move, frankly it makes me suspicious that it simply isn't in their interests. This carbon tax will likely go to securing more dependency votes. 2. There is no party difference with regard to militarization of wherever. The democrat Obama's drone terrorism is probably making us less safe every day. As an aside it's, also, pretty logical to update the nuclear strike system as the more uncertainty in it there is, the more anxious "leaders" might be in such a confrontation. So Trump's policy with regard to nukes maybe isn't unsound, of coarse it's still M.A.D.

This sounds like a crash course in American political history for the last several decades.

It sounds to me that Noam thinks that the overthrow of Assad would be a good thing which is what we are trying to do. Overthrowing governments has worked so well in the past. Going back to Iran in the 1950's to Sadaam and to Ghadaffi.

The more I listen to, and/or read, Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, Ralph Nader, Smedley Butler, Michael Hudson etc etc, the more I hear Rage Against the Machine songs playing in my head 😉

If this is part 2, where is part 1?

The only thing I disagree with him on, and this kind 'a minor, but... to some a big deal - was the whole "they've been hit hard, not to 3rd world standards, but in 1st world standards" in referring to the White Working Class's suffering. Let's be frank here, ALL poor are the same, MLK said it himself. The differences between a white poor man and black poor man and far less than a white rich man vs a white poor man. I say this because, actually, Noam; if you travel to some of the worst areas in the USA? (and these areas are becoming more numerous) they ARE 3rd world. We've got entire counties with No running Water, No electricity, illiteracy rates in the 60th percentiles, median age of mortality at 46 years and so on and so forth. The USA has an astonishingly high illiteracy rate, where we have entire multi million population cities like Houston TX with a literacy rate of 15%. The USA has the highest birth mortality rate, AND WE SUPPOSEDLY HAVE A FIRST WORLD HEALTH CARE SYSTEM... odd if you ask me. The USA is getting THAT BAD, Noam. I've seen it. I've been IN IT. I've seen to the third world too. Honduras was a real thing for me. It shouldn't shock you to admit that, what you see in Bales or Honduras or Haiti, you also see here in America. It's THAT, BAD. I can attest to it. Go to northern Auburn and look at the Shanty Hills, thousands of homes made of left over ply wood and metal planks like you see in 3rd world realms, Go to Mobile, go to Kansas, go to Charleston South Carolina. There's a reason why people are pissed. A big, big reason. One that this country just doesn't want to admit, and that's the source of the problem. That's why the GOP has gotten this far. EVEN OUR POOREST OR POOR, Won't Complain about the system because they've been so indoctrinated by evangelical messages, promises of prosperity through Trickle Down Economics and the guarantee that their Congressman actually care about them (NOT), that they themselves cannot admit there's a problem. They still think Russia is a Commie Threat, they still think the World was created only 6,000 years ago, they still think Global Warming doesn't exist, they still think Capitalism is the purest of Gold standards, they still think that this suffering, is normal; they still think that they are only suffering now because they just havn't had enough Protestant work ethic and just need to work harder and produce more GDP for less, they still think that God is looking out for them and that they're just being tested. was going out for a Subway sandwich, but decided to stay in to watch this interview, one of the best by Dr. Chomsky I found in years. And to see him talk ab out history bending towards justice was great to hear. Also glad about Cuba, but I would give President Obama some credit also.

It's a shame that Chomasky's analysis of Syria is reduced to West vs East and regional politics, without bringing out the role of the Syrians themselves, who should be at the heart of the analysis. Also, not recognising the essential and major role of brutal dictators of Syria (Iraq, Saudi, Libya, etc) in the rise of terrorism and violence in Syria, Iraq and Libya. It's definitely a disappointing gap in the proposed analysis!

As always - interesting listening.. I would like to hear more on Mr Chomsky's thought s on the Mid East. Does he see reason for any optimism at all? What are his thoughts on Iran and Saudi for example- should they receive equal treatment in US foreign policy or not?

The only thing I disagree on is that I don't fault Obama for updating our nuclear facilities. Many of them are very run down and unsafe. Most still run computers from the 60's! We needed to update them to make sure our own nukes are safely stored.

If Chomsky recommended Trump with the hope of bringing positive change he would be ridiculed as old and senile rather than a positive change agent. Better he remain confused about the present cause of weapons escalation.

The impact of Chomsky's work on global politics?

I like how it ended on a positive note.

I want a source for the 7-target 1000-plane raid Chomsky mentions at 26:23. Supposedly launched after the surrender of Japan on August 15 1945. I can't seem to find any information about it except from one left-wing website that also promotes the "Roosevelt knew" Pearl Harbor conspiracy theory. Chomsky claims that bombs and leaflets fell on Osaka saying "your government has surrendered" - well that may very well be true, but according to Wikipedia an Osaka raid occurred on August 14 and I think that's the raid in question (which would mean it happened before the surrender). I believe the reason the leaflets mention surrender is because Japan agreed to a conditional surrender on August 10, but did not agree to the actual unconditional surrender until 5 days later. I would agree that seeking unconditional surrender was an unnecessary demand, but that's a separate issue. If someone could direct me to a book or legit source for this 'post-surrender seven-city thousand plane raid' then I would be grateful.

A great opinion as usual, but I disagree with few points mentioned. My country is definitely a strong ally with the states, as we promised to stick through thick and thin together as friends. Our region is faced with a conflict of two world major powers the west on one side and the east on the other. Regarding the war in Syria you have to go back to the origins of it. Iran, Syria and the Iranian backed Lebanese militia. While Syria represent a threat to the Zionist, who have a powerful lobby and on the other hand attacked the stats on two occasions once in the 60s to make it look like another country did it and the other in September 2001 as the emerging avoidance shows. When the states make a strategic/intelligence move in the region, it does not mean our country is involved in it, in this case financing those bigots. My country have faced towering threats from those radical groups between 2003-2006, but thank God we properly dealt with the roots of the issue. I think we have to notice who is benefiting from the existence of such radical militias, is it the current regime in Syria who are claiming their fighting terror! is it their allies! or could it be the same side that is fearful regarding their current tension situation with their borders!

A sad state of affairs when those responsible for dissemination and honest appraisal would reject naming those "firestarters" and comfortably sit and spin that same old song and dance--the Hegelian Shuffle! My level of confidence in pure non-interest news speak: 95% Bias Parroting: 3% By-product filler: 2%

Norm Chomsky has never been in a Welfare office in his life. Bill Clinton offered people on welfare jobs, there was employment assistance in the welfare offices much like an unemployment office. Those jobs were also non prejudicial, and gave jobs that did not discriminate against minorities. Many Afican Americans got off Welfare and got real jobs, as a result of this program. Welfare was never seen by the poor as a life style, nor should it have been generational . Clinton understood.that it was prejudice that made welfare a needed life style. Although I'm white in the last 90's due to an accident I went on welfare and I saw this program. I has removed under the Bush administration.

He's wrong on how Kennedy handled Cuba. He either isn't aware of the strength of the CIA and the military/security complex in deciding and fomenting US foreign policy, especially during the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson administrations, or it doesn't fit with his general confirmation bias. Had Kennedy not resisted the insistence of his military and CIA advisors and allowed the invasion of Cuba as they insisted during the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile crises, all out Nuclear war with Russia would certainly have been the result. Noam Chomsky is obviously a very well read individual (you would expect being a former professor), but it amazes me how wrong he is about so many things. Climate change? Really? Despite all the politically motivated studies, the obvious implications of increased globalism, the absolute stamping out effect it would have on anybody who isn't already a member of the international elite, and the vast amounts of data massaging, they STILL can't prove it. And yet, it's still the "most important issue of our time." Regarding Brazil and South America - we're seeing the ultimate failure of the left to provide anything of substance to anyone. The people there are sick of this failure and mismanagement and are rightly blaming the left's failed policies to encourage prosperity or growth. Regarding military spending - this one is easily the biggest lie leftist thinkers tell. Chomsky at least specifies that he means "discretionary" spending, so no fault there, but what he doesn't mention is that when you factor our discretionary and mandatory spending together, we end up spending 75% of all our money on social welfare payouts - Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. Michael Ratner on Cuba - I would imagine the Cuban's thought of him as exactly the type of useful idiot they would need to progress their agenda. Americans need to understand that the Cubans are absolutely laughing at us. We aren't going to make any headway whatsoever with them. But hey, it's supposedly a communist paradise (as long as you don't ask any of the people who fled that place).

It is okay to disagree with is viewpoint but you can learn a lot from him as he often quotes from respectable and reliable sources. I have yet to come across any of his critics invalidate the data or information he has presented rather they attack his opinion. This man claims to be an accomplished intellectual, yet he flippantly says that there is no discussing climate change, that it's already been decided. Only 1,200 scientists supposedly signed the IPCC docuiment on gloibal warming. Many didn't agree and wanted their names taken off. The list includes anyone involved, bureaucrats and so on, involved with the IPCC. In contrast, 32,000 actual scientists (including geologists, climatologists and polar region experts) signed a document questioning the science behind 'gloal warming'.

That's a pretty aristocratic background behind him there, for someone who doesn't like the rich and what they do very much. Maybe he thought a nautical theme would help him sell his message, but the dichotomy only weakens it. How can you believe some guy talking about the evils of American wealth and power, when it looks so nice and peaceful?

The fact is, there are privileged people in the world who recognize that there is striking corruption and inequality which exists and they recognize that it is a real threat to creating instability. I see no conflict in the privileged speaking out on the behalf of the oppressed - it is in their best interest.

Believe what you want; Chomsky doesn't require you to believe anything to be useful. To judge him on the photo background is just one more absurd attempt to discredit him by someone with no insight at all. How do you even know Chomsky chose the photo? He probably had nothing to do with it; he's kind of busy writing books, making speeches, traveling the world, etc. If he had chosen it, your criticism is still worthless. Judge him on whether what he says makes sense, is backed up by facts, and provides insights that people concerned with peace and justice need. Nothing else matters, and on those matters, nobody is better than Chomsky when it comes to understanding how the US uses it's power to influence events throughout the world, and quite a bit about the rest of the world as well. Read his books, check the notes, and then maybe you'll have something worth saying about Chomsky. Until then, you ought to follow Abe Lincoln's advice: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt".

we are all paid informants one way or another, Mercury... There are millions of others who feed us nothing everyday though they are right at the forefront of the problems... I assure you now, our consciousness grows more because of the few who become whistle blowers than because there are no collaborators... We are all complicit in the problems of the world brother...

Right, just an old geezer who happens to be considered the leading public intellectual IN THE WORLD, not only in the US, where he's been almost totally ignored by corporate media for over 50 years. This is just a brief summary of what Chomsky has to say about these issues. He's written over a hundred books on these and related topics, so what could he possibly know?

The decline is because of the decline of will to contribute yourself in what yu are not prepared !

I used to respect Chomsky until he decided to back a neocon for presidency.

Dear Uncle Noam, what you are saying is the truth, but your people are not interested in the truth. They just want analysts who dance at their tunes. It is needless to say that Al Qaeda was the product of CIA during the Cold War era and ISIS appeared after America's invasion of Iraq and the long standing issue of Israeli occupation of Palestinian land under unconditional support of the United States. We must know then where is the source of terrorism and where terrorism comes from!! Islam has been in the region for 1400 years, while the concept of terrorism is a modern phenomenon that started form Western colonialisation and occupation of other nations' lands. Let's call spade spade.

+Christian Jacobs You're too dumb to understand what he meant. As his opponent she criticized his promises being real and all progressive know thats how it turned out. Of course her win would have been much worse. I can only hope to be so clear minded at his age.

I hear his last wish is to skydive parachute free..so his brain can get more air. Its why he wrote that last book.

Though I respect Chomsky highly, there are a few points in reality that differ. The Kurds are not liked by any of their neighboring countries and are considered by them to be gangs much like biker gangs who pillage and harm and retreat behind apposing borders. That we support them in the west is not an indication of how ethical they are. On the contrary, giving them power over the area is unworkable. Why not just push to get the CIA out of their, without their meddling for the Greater Israel agenda the whole area would be in peace. Assad can be brought down with his own people or we can force him to allow his people to vote for who they want to rule them. At this time fearing his life he is probably quite willing to do that.

+Nacho this is wildly inaccurate, opinion polls taken in the middle east has shown the muslim world is overwhelmingly opposed to and worried about radicals. As they should be, they're the main victims of the violence.
