I have been following Chloe's channel for quite some time now. They don't have any issues with her. She loves her mom and dad, and don't think that when you hear a serval hissing that it is angry, or scared, the hissing noises, that Servals and Caracals make are more akin to house cats when they meow, it's simply a form of communication, it is more important to watch the body posture, and the ears when looking for fright or anger in these cats. Chloe is very beautiful and seems to be a very happy cat. From what I understand Servals have been captive bred in the United States since the 1950s, so none of the ones here have ever been a true "wild" cat. As far as whether they should be kept as pets, this has been going on with servals since the ancient Egyptians.

Some medium sized to large cats can scare you with a casual hiss but they often don't mean it. I have also seen a puma do it. Look at the ears, eyes, and posture, just as you said. Jumping because the cat hissed can turn a cat that wasn't scared into one that is.

Servals are sort of an edge case (along with caracals) in that they aren't big cats (panthera) and are closer to a housecat genetically than pretty much every other wild cat. This means that they may not be domesticated, but they aren't dangerous to own and just require a lot of really specific living requirements (eg. enough space, specific types of food, etc.). Also, the hissing isn't a sign that it's unhappy--that is just the noise they make when they are excited (good or bad) So, as a general rule, people shouldn't own wild animals and try to keep them as pets; however, servals/caracals are just close enough to domesticated animals that they can be kept, but only if you have the resources to make sure that all of their needs are met. Failing to do so will be cruel and result in them being unhappy, which nobody wants. It's like getting a fennec fox as a pet--you CAN do it, but you probably shouldn't.

It should also be pointed out that when people can't handle owning a wild cat (or any other wild animal) or if they don't have a plan in place if they suddenly pass away, it often doesn't end well because it's difficult to rehome them. If they are lucky, a sanctuary or experienced owner will take them in...but not all are lucky.

@@Uhlersoth77How did the cats value become higher than the value of a humans life. Having a plan B in mind in case you pass away is completely wrong. That is not needed to own any animals.

They should not be house pets and definitely should be illegal to breed them and sell them. Even if one owner can be responsible, doesn't mean others are. Special care and commitment is required and even then, they are better off living in the wild if possible. That means rescues only, and experienced handlers only for these animals.

This applies to dogs. Just because one dog owner can be responsible doesn't mean others will be. So ban dogs, right?

@@Aliandrin It's way worse with exotic pets that require specialized care, so much so that its just hard to take this seriously... but the neglect and casual abuse of all pets is also commonplace and its heartbreaking really. There should be some kind of requirement that you actually learn wtf you're doing whatever animal you keep. You make it depend on you? Then don't give a shit about its needs? GTFO.

@@lithelily So what if we put in the requirement to take tests or whatever for dogs and it doesn't stop people getting mauled? There are both lazy people who are good red-tape cutters though they won't keep it up at home, and good people who will lose their pets because though they are doing the right thing, the test was designed to confuse people and screen them out. There's this assumption that travesty can only be on one side, and it can't be a travesty to take away peoples' pets that love them.

The serval was born as a domestic animal, it is far more cruel to send a domestic cat out into the wild when it has no idea how to fend for itself. They didn't go and hunt for the animal. Please understand that it would be like sending your pet into the wild to hunt and find shelter when it has no idea how to do it.

@@P1995. She was in a breeder, these animals (who shouldn't be breed, to be honest) wouldn't survive without someone taking care of them. Chloe's parents have done the best they could do for her, and I believe she doesn't fell trapped or anything like that. She clearly loves her home.
