Chladni Plates

Ойын-сауық

Four centrally mounted brass plates are driven into various resonant states with a violin bow. Sand sprinkled on the plates helps to visualize the nodes and antinodes for each state. Pressing a fingernail against the edge of the plate imposes a boundary condition (as does the location of the bow, for certain plates).
There are dozens of continuity errors and other technical mistakes-sorry about that.

    Different sound provides different particle order or is it the same if it's done again? I'm reading the music theory for computer musicians and there I saw they mentioned this experiment which I've never heard of before. But is it harmonic music or just noise?

    I would assume it's mostly harmonic, because you can hear discrete fundamental tones.

    I wonder if the use of interlocking blocks in intricate patterns in ancient structures like Machu Picchu work in a similar way. The blocks create a system of tension and compression forces that can help to distribute and dissipate energy throughout the structure, reducing the risk of collapse from earthquakes. While the physics of Chladni patterns and seismic waves are different, the underlying principles of energy distribution and resonance seem similar to me. I wonder what frequencies earthquakes tend to be and what patterns in 3D are most stable under those conditions

  • @jameswilkes451

    @jameswilkes451

    I would imagine earthquakes would have a very complex frequency that might be hard to pin down lol. Typically the strength of a pyramid shape structure is only strongest because a pyramid takes up a very low volume and thus resists the effects of gravity and collapse more than another shape. Very interesting idea you have though, it's always food for thought

    what is the thickness of the plates? are they pure brass, or some kind of alloy? would carbon steel work as well? do you need a metal or foam/rubber washer between the screw and the plates? does the distance between the plate and the wooden mount matter? so the music, depending on the vibes, can certainly give "shape" to the matter. it probably influx in the developing of "one shape" or the other, in biology or cell terms (?) may have an influence for example in the creation of one form of cells or other? how much? this forms (from vibes) always reminds me the different cells in the microscope. anyone knows any research of that?

  • @warmexpression

    Ofcourse you are right... Music can give shapes to matter which means, different frequencys of sound can alter cells. This gives much more complex thoughts about solfeggio frequencys and our health

    IF you record those sounds and attach a speaker to the bottom of the plates and replay the sounds WILL THEY form the same patterns ?

  • @NatSciDemos

    @NatSciDemos

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question! My initial guess is that it could work, though one may need a dangerous amount of sound pressure from the speaker to get the sand to move the same way that the bow can. An easier-and more common-method is to mount the plate on a mechanical transducer and drive it with a signal generator.
