Chiswick to Hammersmith Splendid Riverside London Walk
An excellent riverside London walk from Chiswick to Hammersmith with lovely pubs and history and a Fullers Brewery tour!
This makes a perfect pub crawl and the pubs are really ancient with river views.
We also visit Chiswick House and William Hogarth's house.
A highly recommended tour of the Fullers Brewery where they brew London Pride and many other beers.
The excellent Villa di Geggiano restaurant where you can buy wine by Sting and Trudie.
Chiswick Mall with many 18th century houses and St Nicholas Chiswick Church.
The ghost of Hammersmith, Minder, Bottom, Hammersmith Odeon and much much more!!

Strand on the Green. Chiswick. So beautiful and so much to see and do. Just watch out for the high tide of the River Thames. It floods The Strand at a very high tide. Great pubs and food. 🎉🎉🎉 😂😂😂
Decades ago my wife and I were in London and wanted to go to the Chiswick house and gardens. Being from the USA we were asking what bus/train would take us there and we were pronouncing it Chess-wick. Well, it wasn't until we had asked about six people that we learn it is pronounced Chis-ick. 🤓
What a relief to receive a notification that it’s none other than Joolz ! 😃

Perfect timing as tomorrow, for the first time,I will be taking the 3 Hour return Thames Boat Trip from Westminster Pier to Kew Bridge:) With free transport on all the rest of my journey then my only travel expense is the Concessionary amount of £19 (usually £26 ) and, weather permitting,I am looking forward to it. I have done Greenwich-Westminster many times but never gone West on the river from Central London and it should be really lovely and picturesque:
I enjoyed going down memory lane, I was a pupil at Latymer prep school during 1952 (70 years ago!) Sir Compton McKenzie's house was close to The Doves, I also remember when Bill Haley's "Rock around the clock" was shown at the Odeon, his fans threw the cinemas chairs out on the pavement to make room to dance!
Merci beaucoup de bénédictions Joolz 💯 you are The Living Book of LONDON HalleluYAH 🎺🎺🎺💯😘

My favorite London walk is From Kew Station to Hammersmith, so most of this walk! And I love to finish it off with a stop at The Dove!
Finally, you're in West London. If you come Richmond side, drop me a note, we can go 'walkabout' together. :)
This brought back some amazing memories for me. I was born just off of Fulham Palace Road and all of the area you’ve shown, was my childhood / teen stamping ground. My father was one of the surveyors responsible for the renovation of Butterwick, which is the area in the centre of Hammersmith roundabout. Hammersmith Odeon is where I used to go to Saturday morning pictures, and years later, I saw the commodores with Lionel Richie live on stage at the same place. I used to drink in The Rutland which is next door to The Blue Anchor, and run by a wonderful couple, Mike and Thea. Fun fact about the Rutland…Elkie Brooks used to own property very close by and would often be seen at the bar of The Rutland. Nice lady. Anyway, thank you for the tour of my childhood home. Such happy times.
Tasting the beer: "Wow" "Wow" "Wow" From the movie The Great Escape.
Chiswick is the best area ever
I lived in Chiswick just after the War. Nan was a Hammersmith girl and often used to take me and my brother for a walk along the river to Hammersmith Bridge and back. I remember going through the cemetery and past a ship's figurehead that was hanging from a building at the entrance to the riverside path. Then past the Eyot. That was before the flyover was built. A lot has changed since then.
I used to live near Chiswick and Hammersmith in Shepherds Bush, this was all walking distance from me. I did this walk many times, it was so lovely to see all the familiar spots and learn about the history. I watched Sandman on Netflix recently and noticed they filmed along the river between Furnival Gardens and Hammersmith Bridge. The scene where Dream and Death go visit the old man is in one of the apartment blocks overlooking the river. I really miss this part of West London, I was very fond of it. ❤️
You really should do more vids about the Thames. One of the most fascinating rivers in the world. Fascinating historical programmes to be made.
Joolz, I was the fellow who accosted you the other day at St. Pauls Catherdral. What a trip that in a city of 9 million people I should stumble across you. I was visiting from Canada and your videos were a great help. I'm a subscriber for sure.

At about 8 mins. in there's a pump for HSB. This was a recipe from Gales Brewery in Horndean which was absorbed by Fullers a few years ago. Local enthusiasts for it used to say "HSB paralyses parts other beers only reach".
I can't believe you don't have your own TV show!
What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon, than watching another fine video. Great to see some of West London for a change. Love the old buildings in the area, and I'd dread to think of their prices. I imagine a pub crawl along the river, to be a lovely thing to do on a warm sunny day.

Joolz you absolute star... I lived in W4 for 51 years, just moved so looking forward to this one!
I worked at Harrods in the early 1970s, and it was true that you could then order anything, their telegraphic address was "Harrodseverything"; in those days they had a pet department which stocked puppies, kittens and rabbits, but you could order any exotic animal you wanted and they would obtain it for you. Alongside the Harrods Furniture Depository was the Harrodian Club, a sports and social club for Harrods employees which was sold by the store and is now the site of the Harrodian School in Barnes.
So pleased you got to the Bottom bench. Put a big smile of my face. Such a loss loosing Rik so young.

24:49 : Most important by far Joolz!....Minder, which just happens to be the greatest TV show of all time for the uninitiated....closely followed by Only Fools and Horses, Flowery Twats and M.A.S.H. - Peace to both George Cole and Dennis Waterman.

This is wonderful, used to live near Fullers brewery, loved the smell of mashing in the morning. Fun fact - on the little beach opposite the Chiswick Eyot the Grateful dead were frolicking about on their famous European tour - it's actually in that documentary of theirs (I was low key expecting Joolz to mention it 😀)
Brilliant ... extraordinary to see...

6:20 As always if its beer there is a Burton upon Trent connection. So proud that London's pride was brewed using Burton kit . Morton's now part of Briggs so still going. And yes I do like Marmite.
This is so enjoyable, indeed.. Packed full of interesting details from start to finish. The Fuller's brewery tour stands out as a real bonus, and the details of 'Minder' photos being taken at Hammersmith, as well as so many other items, are of really great interest. Many thanks, Joolz.
Some unwanted information: WB Yeats composed poetry down the Chiswick Eyot (his permanent residence was close by in Bedford Park). The Chiswick Mall features in the opening pages of Vanity Fair, which perhaps says something about its residents at the time. Thanks for another great vid Joolz!

This video has been the most endearing to me as I have some history attached to this being an Ealing girl, parents took me to a lot of places of interest. For nearly 6 decades I have been past the Fullers Brewery many times in a car for numerous reasons, I never realised the brewery had tours! I wonder if anyone remembers the Fullers Passport. Thanks again for another fab interesting video Joolz ☺️
I have a friend who is a descendant of Henry (Harry) hook also awarded a v.c at rorkes drift
Regarding the Harrods Depository , I worked for an old London auction house in the mid 1980s and we occasionally received several tea chests full of items that had been stored there in, some cases since well before the War. You name it, chests full of flapper dress for the 1920s with bird of paradise head dresses, Masonic items, Objetd’ar of many types, and shall we say many more “private items” such as old photographs, and items of pleasure! Gosh. The original owners were no doubt long dead. But their naughtiness lived on.

Back in the day, the 'Latymer Prep School' building also housed some main school six form rooms. The third floor projecting window offered the best view in town of the Boat Race. All the way round the Hammersmith bend from Harrods Depository up to Chiswick Eyot. Other Old Latymerians included Alan Richman, Mel Smith, Hugh Grant, Heston Blumenthal, Dan Luger. As well as a few notorious politicos, Allegra Stratten (yes, that one!), Larry Whitty, Keith Vaz, Peter Walker.
Thomas Jefferson was a student of Andrea Palladio’s style, as well. His Monticello has a similar central section and polygonal dome as Chiswick House, only in brick.
