Chip Ganassi's Quest to Build America's Best Street Race | 1993 New York GP

Спорт

IndyCar was set to race on the streets of Manhattan in 1993. The New York City race around the World Trade Center was the most ambitious street race ever tried in the United States, spearheaded by Chip Ganassi. But despite high hopes, the race never happened. In this video, we discuss what the big plans were and why they fell apart.

I was barely over a year old when the towers fell. After I learned about 9/11 and the horrors of that day, I always looked for footage of New York pre 2001. Watching those videos with the towers on the background puts me at ease for a while. I still remember the first time I watched the intro for The Sopranos and saw the WTC on the rearview mirror...

It'll be interesting to see how F1 pulls off the planned race on the streets of Miami. About 30 years ago there was some talk about an Indycar race in the streets of Philadelphia. The circuit would have been around the art museum circle and Logan Square. It never really got past the talking stage. I personally like street courses.

As a native NYer, it’s painful to see every planned major racing in the area blow. My dad is a huge F1 fan and having a race just 20 minutes away was big. We had the proposed NASCAR track that fell. Politicians and residents were against it. A local rumor suggests that NASCAR pulled the plug on construction because they didn’t used mob-owned construction companies. The problem with Meadowlands was the environment. When I think of running in the NY area, I think of skyscrapers or downtown streets, not a parking lot that’s 30 minutes away from Manhattan, driving. There’s public transportation that goes to the Meadowlands but NYers aren’t willing to travel from Brooklyn or Queens to New Jersey on the subway then a bus. It’s a hassle to drive through the city. If the event was actual held in the five boroughs, then there would have been more interest because it’s easily accessible by public transportation. 1:51 when Larry Nuber asks the lady, she’s probably an accurate representation of casual fans. Sure, you could ask someone from here who Mario Andretti or Jeff Gordon is and they probably heard of them, but don’t exactly know what they actually do. Really a shame to see the CART race didn’t go through. The closest NASCAR race is Pocono Raceway, but why show up to one of the worst races on the schedule. The closest INDYCAR race used to be Pocono Raceway, shame that it’s not on the schedule. We got IMSA at the Glen and Lime Rock. We used to have the old SCCA Trans-Am races at Bridgehamptom (Long Island) back in the 70s. Now all we got is Formula E, which looks like it will stick around for a few years.

Dover and richmond are other tracks my family has driven to. Pocono is good racing you just need to watch from the infield atop an rv. The grandstands are lame. Dover is my favorite track. You can see the whole race from the stands and its some good racin to see. I feel like watkins glen would be like pocono, you only get to watch part of the race track. Still I want to go and see what it’s like, i’m always saying that there is a track in our state and we should hit it but it’s actually farther than pocono.

Amazing video. I’m a resident of NYC, living on 72nd street in upper east side, Manhattan. I feel like a race in the city is definitely possible, it’ll just be a matter of having to get multiple series to work together and work with the Mayor Office. Their primary concern is money, and if they can bring in Millions for one weekend, that’ll open up their ears for sure. Downtown Manhattan may be difficult, but Roosevelt Island, Long Island City, Astoria, are all places that can maximize a street race with having the skyline right in view.

The Indianapolis 500 has been around for over a century, it's the longest running race in professional motorsports, and there's a reason F1's moving the Monaco Grand Prix to accommodate it rather then the other way around.

I wonder if this race had happened and been successful until 2002 when the contract ran out if the 2001 terrorist attack would've happened on race day and not on 9/11

I wonder how this event's complexity would've changed with 9/11 had the deal gone through. I mean the freakin' WTC was literally the centerpiece of the racetrack-- And with that being gone I'm doubtful that it really would have continued, not to mention the massive cleanup effort as a result of the collapse of the twin towers before the 2002 running. The separation of time between September 2001 & late May/early June of '02 wasn't a lot, I'm pretty sure ground zero was still a mess by the time the hypothetical date of the GP had come around. Who knows, I do think that before then the race would've been massive. Unfortunately we'll truly never know.

I'm glad they dropped the race and replaced it with Cleveland. That track layout looks like a debacle, nowhere to pass and slow as balls.

I love listening to the American sport complain about commercialism Also do you think anyone will eventually get a New York Grand Prix in the city. I remember F1 fell through a decade ago too

I honestly doubt anyone will want to race in New York City. The city isn't the prestigious place it was from the 80s to the late 00s, after Giuliani cleaned up the city businesses where hit hard with the September 11th attack, that and the Dot Com bubble bursting both saw the city enter a decline that Bloomberg wasn't able to reverse because he was no Giuliani, and then the Housing Bubble burst which only accelerated the decline, and for all Bloombergs failings de Blasio did an even worst job of reversing the decline. More businesses have been moving to New Jersey or as far afield as Arizona, and people who can afford to movie to New Jersey have been doing so at a faster and faster rate, and that was before the lockdowns began. It's a dying city, one people overlook because talking about California's decline is more interesting, and no one noticed Florida bumping it out of the 3rd largest state in the Union. If the New York Grand Prix had managed to happen in the 1990s it'd likely still be around if Tony Steward hadn't split the series, it wouldn't be if he had, but there's no realistic situation a major series would want the hassle of racing in New York City in its current state.

NO! He still works today as an IRL spotter. What does a clam know about Indy racing anyway? Especially a clam up posting on YT in the middle of the night? A true clam fan would not concern herself with the past. But rather be camping in Rossburg, Ohio today *(THAT'S RIGHT, 07/17/21)* for the richest race in Sprint Car History. Two *(As in 2)* races that both pay $175,000 to win today.
